To the Giants fans and observers: as best as I can tell, right now the Giants are eligible for a 3rd and two 7th round compensatory picks:

Not bad

so now people will say if the Giants keep their complement of picks for 2020 "awesome 11 picks" (they got a 2020 7th round pick from the Saints in the Eli Apple trade) but 4 7th rounders, and a 6th rounder and even a 5th are pretty useless.

but the people looking to "hoard" draft picks and lamenting why do the Patriots always have 12 picks, will be happy.

Jamon Brown offsetting Golden Tate would be a nice break for NYG.

So we know it won't happen. ;o)

I assume the Giants will be net buyers in the latter stages of free agency, but they aren't likely to do anything that would offset Collins. That said, I think some of those projected rounds will drop. Preston Smith (ranked #64) offsets Collins in Round 3? I'm not even sure Collins (#45) rates a third-round projection.

Comp Picks

The formula that the league uses to calculate the compensatory picks is so secret that it's not even released to the teams. Also, it changes every year.

The Giants may be "eligible" to receive those picks but that in no way means they're actually going to get any of them.

The picks are announced in February because player performance during the season is an important part of the calculation. For example, if Landon Collins is seriously injured in the preseason and doesn't play next year, the Giants will not receive a comp pick for him. If he plays 16 games that number becomes part of the formula. If he leads the Redskins in tackles that number becomes part of the formula. Same if he intercepts five passes, returns two for touchdowns, makes the Pro Bowl etc....

Right now, there's no way to tell if the Giants will receive any comp picks next year.
