According to everything I've read, Beal was a steal and a 1st round talent, likely to be the top CB in this year's draft had he not come out in last year's delayed supplemental draft.
My questions are:
Is he better (or as good) than this year's Byron Murphy (considered the best CB in this draft and a top 15 pick by most), Greedy Williams, Rock-ya Sin, or Deandre Baker (all graded as 1st round talents)?
Sam Beal.....6'1", 195 lbs, 40 time at Pro Day: 4.40, 37-inch vertical jump, 10-foot-6 inch broad jump
Bryan Murphy....5'11", 182 lbs, 40 time at Combine: 4:55, 36.5 vertical jump, 10-foot-0 inch broad jump
Greedy Williams....6'2", 185 lbs, 40 time at Combine: 4.37, did not jump
Rock-ya Sin.....6"0", 192 lbs, 40 time at Combine: 4:51, 39.5 inch vertical jump, 10-foot-0 inch broad jump
Deandre Baker...5'11", 193 lbs, 40 time at Combine: 4.52, did not vertical jump, 9-foot-3 inch broad jump
IMO, Beal would have been the top CB taken in this year's draft. Of course, that's unprovable and all we have to go on for comparison is athleticism based on track-and-field type measurements. Still, the book on him is that he has incredible fluidity in his hips and is a super talent when playing "man defense".
If Beal is healthy this year, it will be interesting to see what he is capable of. If he turns out to be a Pro Bowl corner, we got a ridiculous steal. Let us hope
2) Pro day times and combine times are different. Unless something's changed recently, the track at the combine is pretty slow.
This is not to diss Beal. I don't know where he'd be taken this year.
anyone comment on this re Beal?
anyone comment on this re Beal?
I was reading the reports on him as well as his coach's comments. They all say the same thing. He's a super "man cover" guy. He would be put on the opponents top receiver and he'd shut them down, no matter how big the program. They also added that a CB doesn't get a lot of interceptions playing man because they focus almost entirely on the receiver. They also said that CB's who play zone get a lot more interceptions because they are focusing on the QB and move in from different angles and if the WR doesn't run the route nearly perfect, the ball ends up for grabs. Still, Beal had a few interceptions in his college career.
In short, all scouts and coaches (that I've read up on) raved about his man coverage and say he's really the definition of a "shut down corner". Lucky for us, the Giants play a lot of man and with Jack Rabbit on the other side, hopefully we have a good defense in the air game. Now, if the safeties and LB's can shut down the TE's and slot receivers, our defense should improve...and it needs to be.
Thornhill: 4.42 40 / 21 reps / 44 Vert / 141 Broad - ( New Window )
But i doubt he does
combine numbers aside - that kid is a player.
Quote:
...the Giants could just draft Juan Thornhill at #37 at let him play cover-one for the next four years, or even move him to corner. Thornhill: 4.42 40 / 21 reps / 44 Vert / 141 Broad - ( New Window )

Exactly!
Saquon Barkley blew the doors off at the combine...as did OBJ. Another one did backflips the width of a football field and the Giants drafted him based on athleticism since he didn't have a long resume...his name: Jason Pierre Paul.
Of course, the combine is littered with speed demons and Olympic type athletes who weren't football players and hence, flamed out.
By all accounts and coaches/scouts unanimously agree that Beal is a football player. His measurables are just whip cream and a cherry on top.
I have a big interest in Montez Sweat and Devin White who have put up incredible combine numbers. But it's true, combine numbers don't necessarily mean a guy can play football like a star
But i doubt he does
Greedy didn't look good in the DB drills at the combine. Murphy on the other hand looked great.
I hope he's great of course, but I don't have high expectations at all.
or do you mean you actually saw him work when he’s been with the giants? then we’d all be interested in what you saw and think.
In any case the proof is in the pudding, sure "He looks like a 1st rounder" yet did not go in the 1st or 2nd rd for that matter. Yet he's a first rounder got it.
Hopefully we have a ten year starter !
It would be in the best interests of both Beal and the Giants to proclaim that Beal is perfectly healthy and fit. Is anyone aware of such an announcement?
CB Jason Sehorn recovered well enough to play every conceivable sport very well except football. With Beal we have the double concern of not knowing if Beal will recover well enough to play football and whether he will be any good at NFL Footbal even if he is perfectly healthy.
The Giants wasted no time getting him into surgery (last August) which seems kinda weird if it's just a dislocation.
Regardless, I suspect he'll be back in business come Spring training.

Seahorn tore his ACL and MCL. Beal dislocated his shoulder. Huge difference.

Oh yes YouTube. The tool of all amateur armchair scouts to judge a player. Cause that is how all scouts looks at players. YouTube clips. smh
He had 2 surgeries within roughly a year's time. Anyone who thinks it's not a concern is nuts. Plenty of bad things happen when a joint separates.
Who knows how it will work out. Hopefully he's passed it.
