The 17th pick and moving up.

Des51 : 3/16/2019 12:18 pm
It was mentioned yesterday, as asshat info, that the Giants wanted to move up from 17 to get Devin White. Like many I thought why not take him at 6, perhaps a bit high for him. Then I see all the interest in Rashan Gary and wonder if he's the guy at 6, and then move up from 17 to get Devin White.
I don't think 6 is too high for White. He's my #4 overall player.
Anakim : 3/16/2019 12:21 pm : link
He basically does everything that Roquan Smith does, except he's bigger, a better blitzer, but with a tad less instincts (probably because he's still learning the nuances of the LB position after switching over from RB. That'll come over time.)

Exactly how I would describe White. Better closing speed than Smith too.
He may be the best player when they pick at 6
superspynyg : 3/16/2019 12:25 pm : link
depending on how they value the qbs, Rashan Gary, Sweat, and some others.

White is a top 10 pick
mavric : 3/16/2019 12:26 pm : link
Considering how light top end LB's are this draft, I can see White going at 6. Unlike Edge Rushers,Defensive linemen, and Safeties...there are only 2 LB's rated as 1st round picks (Devin White and Devin Bush). White is considered the top LB'r by far in this draft. Next in line is Mack Wilson who is considered a late 2nd pick. All other LB'rs in this draft are rated 3rd to 7th round picks. White stands alone as the premier LB in this draft. And he's going to be a good one.
I wouldn't be opposed to White at 6
Jay on the Island : 3/16/2019 12:27 pm : link
but I would prefer a pass rusher. I don't think the Giants will be willing to meet the asking price to move up from 17 into the top 10 where they will need to be in order to take White. I hope they stand pat or possibly trade down from 17 in order to acquire another 2nd or a 2020 1st. Bush is a very good option for them at 17.

Every time i watch him, his closing speed becomes more and more impressive.
Trading up is a bad idea

White is an excellent player but so is D. Bush and bush may even be a better fit for our D
White and Bush
Des51 : 3/16/2019 12:32 pm : link
I would love White at 6 and Bush at 17. White take Goodson spot and Bush takes Ogletree' place. Trade Ogletree for whatever.
We will take our choice defensive pick at #6
TMS : 3/16/2019 12:37 pm : link
and get a very good player at #17 as well. We should always have these problems . Do not want to give up any of our first six picks . DG will use them well I believe. Hoping we get atarters there. Six starters would have us back in competition this year with or without ELI. MO
The idea off adding....

An edge rusher at 6, and then moving up from 17 to draft White should excite any Giants fan.

Now, if the Giants took White at 6, should they move up for a DL prospect that maybe dropped a bit??
Getting a DL at 6
ryanmkeane : 3/16/2019 1:18 pm : link
and then packing 17 and a few later round picks (maybe a 4th and two 5ths) to move up in the 11-14 range to get White if available would be an absolute coup in the 1st round
Ever since my elation at the Giants picking
Bill in UT : 3/16/2019 1:27 pm : link
my favorite guy, John Mendenhall, I've had a lot of disappointments. I've found it's best for my own well being not to get too invested in specific players prior to draft day. Let DG get the ulcer
Bill, are you forgetting the excitement

When Larry Jacobsen's name was announced?

lol, what a stiff
I hope not Gary

I'm not a big fan of him at 6. I suppose it's okay if you move up to get White then White and Gary combined is fine.

I prefer Oliver over Gary.

I agree with this. I'd rather draft a pass rusher, but assuming Josh Allen is gone, I feel like Sweat fits the 3-4 better than Gary, and I'm not sure if either will be as good of a pure football players as White, so I'd be just fine with White at 6. I'd be happy with a pass rusher at 6 too though and Devin White at 17.
Larry Jacobsen
Samiam : 3/16/2019 2:40 pm : link
What a pick. He was taken after a bowl game with Alabama where John Hannah steamrolled him every play of the game.

With White, read something recently where it was said that he’s more a 4-3,LB. if that’s true, and I have no idea if it is, why would he be in the mix at 6 or 17? Especially given all the other needs

Agree, that would be fine
6 is not to high

For White. Would be more than happy w that kind of player. Ask Gettleman what Keuchley meant to Carolina’s D
Hopefully 2 qbs are taken before us
5BowlsSoon : 3/16/2019 3:38 pm : link
That way we should get the 4th “best” DL. Whoever that is should not be too shabby.

And, more in that vein, I remember watching the 1990 (Hampton in Round 1) when the Giants pick @ Round 2 came time and they picked Mike Fox (WVa) an interior DL, and some *very knowledgeable' Giant fan in the rows near the TV cams stood up and shouted to the Felt Forum (think that's where it was back then): "PENCIL HIM IN FOR THE NEXT 10 YEARS". All caps because he shouted it, loudly, in caps. LOL I'm not sure he even made the 1990 roster coming out of camp, or if so, was gone by the next year.
6 and 17 are ideal
idiotsavant : 3/16/2019 4:21 pm : link
You sit tight and draft the great DL at 6.

If both white and Bush (or Bush and white) are gone at 17, that probably means you have an 'any other years' top 10 dl again at 17, you draft the player as well. Bad ass front 3 (or 4,5) is a good thing.

I'd go with a an OT with the 17th pick in Risner over the linebacker whom I think would be Bush (I expect WHite to be gone.). The cost for OLINE is going up. Next year in Free agency we can find "Bush" at a cheaper price if need be that we can "Risner" who can play all positions along the OLINe.

Though I wouldn't hate having Bush -- I was initially on him if Gmen didn't take a QB in rd 1 but now I think it best to get an OLINEMAN with that 17th pick. Give him a year under his belt so when you get a QB we'd be ready roll with a decent enough OLINE to protect the eventual young QB.
It depends on value
idiotsavant : 3/16/2019 4:34 pm : link
Each year, players of a certain type are elevated just because that unit or category is expected in Rd 1.

Positional drafting, which I have advocated for strongly, greatly, is a better strategy in rds 3-7.

Rd 1-2 you want greatness and to attack the market.

I doubt there is much difference between Risner and Bush. I don;t see Bush as a great player -- just a good one which I see Risner. I think after top 7-10 or so they are no longer "great" or "near great" they are "good" players.
To get Allen.

idiotsavant : 3/16/2019 5:59 pm : link
Points out how a particular drafts sureply at a position can impact draft position of a certain player. White in that example.

I wouldn't call that value exactly. Close but not exactly. One would also compare that player to others in previous years. If they don't equal a first round or top ten in another year, but are ranked high due to low supply, maybe hold off until it balances in the long term view.
Then obviously the converse applies as well
