Curious About RT And TE

wonderback : 3/16/2019 3:20 pm
Wondering what the boards opinion is on this. We're mostly agreed that the RT position needs to be upgraded, either in the draft on by free agency. We watched last year as the offensive line failed to set the edge repeatedly on runs by Barkley.

Now as much as Chad Wheeler left a lot to be desired as a blocker, more times than not I noticed Ellison's repeated inability to set the edge as well. Just a thought: The reviews of T.J. Hochenson's ability not only to catch but block might go a long way towards solving our problem of not being about to run wide. I've watched a lot of Hochenson's blocking and I for one am impressed.

Maybe having a great blocking tight end would make our tackles job so much easier. Offensive line play is a great example where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. Just as two great blocking guards might make Halapio look better at center, maybe Hochenson would make any tackle look that much better. Where is he projected to go in the draft? Is it possible to get him with our second first round pick? Looks like Mark Bavaro part II.
Later round

If we moved Engram to WR, I'd be fine with Hockenson at 17. But Dave Te, on his podcast, likes Dawson Knox, said he's the most complete TE since Gronk. Projected to go in the latter rounds.
I can't see any way that they take a tight end in the first round
Mike in NJ : 3/16/2019 3:33 pm : link
Engram looked really good down the stretch last year once he got healthy. During the second half of the year he put up 33 receptions for 457 yards. His production really spiked once Beckham went out, he averaged 5.5 receptions and 80 yards per game (for context, over a full season that pace would put him at 88 receptions for 1280 yards).

I know the concern with him is blocking, but that can be covered up with upgrades along the offensive line. It just seems like taking another tight end in the first round would be a waste of resources at this point.
Keep an eye on
Jay on the Island : 3/16/2019 3:33 pm : link
Foster Moreau from LSU. He is a great blocker who was underutilized as a receiver. He could develop into an excellent #2 TE to pair with Engram. He will probably go in the 4th round.

Kaden Smith, C.J Conrad, Zach Gentry are all options early on day three.
I would prefer to see the Giants come away
Jay on the Island : 3/16/2019 3:35 pm : link
with a pass rusher at 6 like Sweat or Gary and then add a DT, OL, LB, or WR at 17. I hope the Giants do add at TE in the draft to eventually replace Ellison as the #2 TE but I would prefer to see them wait until day three.
I don't see Engram as part of the team.
Diver_Down : 3/16/2019 3:43 pm : link
I think he is traded. I would love Hockenson at 17. Tough decision because if Cody Ford is still there at 17, I could see him being picked. Dave has spent a lot of time scouting him and has met multiple times.
I'm fine

If there is somebody later in the draft who has the ability to be an in line blocker. Don't follow the draft that closely, only know about the guys in the first two rounds or so. That's why I proposed Hochenson.

Is everybody here in agreement that our blocking from the tight end position was as bad as any in the league? I don't mind Engram as a receiving tight end but we need someone who can block in line, as well as being more than just the occasional receiving threat. It would make Barkley that much more successful.

The blocking wasn't good but it wasn't the worst in football. It was very disappointing that Ellison struggled at times as a blocker. That's the main reason that he was signed and if he improve as a blocker this season it will likely be his last with the Giants.
That's What Got To Me
wonderback : 3/16/2019 4:02 pm : link
I thought Ellison was signed because of his blocking. I would watch as I saw play after play getting blown up at the line of scrimmage. I'm not a film watcher but it was bothering me how this was happening. On closer review, to my horror, it was Ellison that was getting blown up. More than on just a few occasions. Getting a guy like Hochinson or someone similar later on, would solve a huge problem in my opinion. He gets paid was too much given what he gives us. And I know Wheeler's no price but he gets no help from Ellison.
And I know what it means
wonderback : 3/16/2019 4:04 pm : link
To set the edge. Without that, it makes Barkley's job that much harder. The Giants suck at it. It's amazing how well Barkley did last year.
Simonson made some blocks

That said, you look for the weight. Heavier players. 265+

5th might be the round, 'former or too light' offensive tackles.

Was Ed Shaheen last year? Player had great size and game, small school prospect who rose after initially being over looked.

Simonson did seem to improve as the season wore on. Or maybe the coaches saw what I did and wanted to give him more opportunity to play over Ellison in certain situations..
I think we have more important early round
Bill in UT : 3/16/2019 4:07 pm : link
priorities than TE. You can probably pick up a good blocking TE on Day 3
Adam Shaheen
idiotsavant : 3/16/2019 4:08 pm : link
278lbs at draft. Small schooler. Rose quickly in ranks went in #2. Makes plays as a receiver

For comp Ellison claims 255.

I think EE was 245 at draft?
5th round

Everybody keeps saying that and we haven't had one since Howard Cross.

We can pick up in the later rounds too!

It could depend on what you're looking for. If you're looking for the total package, run, catch and block, you're going to have a lot of misses. If your only concern is blocking, I think you can find someone like that.
No Offense Bill

Everyone keeps saying that and yet we still don't have one. Maybe we should just suit up Howard. I mean he's there on game day anyway so ...

no offense taken :)
EE needs ot be replaced no doubt but
giantstock : 3/16/2019 4:54 pm : link
1-- So does RT

2-- We could use a better center.

3-- We could use a better QB

4-- We need a better ILB core

5-- We need a DL passrusher

6-- We need at least one safety and one CB

7-- you can get good blocking tight ends in later rounds. If your point is that we haven't -- then the issue is with the scouting not forcing a selection in an earlier round.

If Gant is available in rd 2 I'd strongly consider him. But in 1st rd I either want a QB or I want an OL or front 7 pick first.

We'll probably get a right tackle. We probably won't get a better center though I think it would be nice for a change to value that position. We're not getting a QB. Would love Devin White and I think we could get him. We'll definitely get an edge rusher just don't know who. Nice to have a couple to choose from. Don't forget about Sam Beal.

Center and blocking TE are like scheduling your colonoscopy on this team. You know you need one but somehow it just never happens.

oh, yeah? Talk to my butt
There are some interesting heavier guard prospects

That might project to center.
What New England Did
Samiam : 3/16/2019 6:08 pm : link
This was done maybe 7-8 years ago - I’m terrible with dates. Belecheck ran the offende around Gronk and Hernandez. If Hochensen can play the Gronk role, Engram can become the matchup problem he was drafted to be like Hernandez was. The problem with Engram being a #1 pick aside
from passing on Ramzyk was they needed a TE who could block to help a putrid OL. Engram is not that TE. But a TE like Hochensen can catch & block. That NE offense was very good until that schmuck Hernandez did what he did. I think a very good TE would be a big time help to Barkley as well
The problem with Engram ...
Diver_Down : 3/16/2019 6:20 pm : link
we can list them and players that should have been picked instead. It seems since we drafted him, people have been claiming that he would be a match-up problem. With his height and speed, you would think he would be running free in the defensive secondary. But it just isn't the case. He makes a valiant effort in blocking when called upon to do so, but he just isn't good. The one thing he is supposed to be good at is also lacking. For a receiving TE, he drops too many passes. He has 2 years remaining on his rookie contract. And I presume (if he isn't traded), that we will still be discussing him being a match-up problem, non-blocking, ball-dropping, move to WR, not-Ramczyk, TE.
