Assuming we don't use that pick in a trade it seems to me that Hockenson fits the profile of what DG is trying to build. Drafting him we can run a two tight end set as our base offense. Great blocker, very good athlete and I think he has just scratched the surface of his potential. Guy just seems to be a football player.
Admittedly I really didn't watch Iowa play at all last year, but everything I read about this guy he seems like the next Jason Witten. Does anyone else think this guy could be a sleeper pick at 17 with what DG wants to accomplish?
...I'm with you!!!
I would love this guy at 17. Also, assuming then an Edge guy at 6!
6 and 3 will already be gone at this point, and no one has a WR that high
Hakeem Butler.
Highest upside in the entire draft class with his size/speed combination and he's not just an athlete playing football he is a football player who is a tremendous athlete with freakish size.
Many like to throw around the Plaxico comparison, while it has some validity, Plaxico had more of a Kevin Knox build while this guy is more a Lebron James build.
Here is Boylehart on him:
Hakeem shows me on film a burning desire to dominate. You can see it in his play on the field, in way he blocks and the way he goes after the ball in the air. He is raw and his route running is inconsistent and lacks polish. He reminds me a lot of Terrell Owens when he came out and I believe, after some adjusting to the next level that Hakeem will become a franchise receiver like Terrell was but without the ON FIELD baggage that seem to follow Owens around from team to team. Out of all these receivers in this draft Hakeem has the biggest upside and that’s saying a lot because there are some very good, big, strong and fast one’s as we all have seen in the combine workouts. If Hakeem keeps his head on straight and doesn’t get it stuck up his buttocks and works hard, he will be the best and become a franchise receiver for the team that selects him. I’m betting he will.

How's this for footwork....

Gronk was a 2nd round pick and Hernandez a 4th (in the same draft), but they really used Hernandez like a WR, not just like the Giants do with Engram, but he literally lined up at TE rarely.
and no I do not want the Giants to draft a TE at 17.
Who is the last 1st round TE who proved to be worth a 1st round pick?
Greg Olsen (31) in 2007?
Without saying whether we should take Hockenson or not, looking at the various mocks he's predicted to go anywhere from #12 to #30, so I don't think it's clear there's no chance he'll be available at #17.
Take your thinking of DG's vision and philosophy of roster contstruction and Hockenson makes sense (so does Cody Ford at #17). But to interpret DG's vision/philosophy, you have to question how Evan "Not Ramczyk" Engram fits? With EE having the stain of Reese, I don't see him being long on the Giants. Maybe we can package EE with our 2nd and move back into the 1st to pick up Ford or Hockenson depending on which one falls further past our #17.
Ha, ha...reminds me of a contest I was in. Whoever had the most guesses in the first round of an NFL draft would win. I won with 6 correct answers....and that was after investing 2 months of my life reading every mock, every analysis, and every piece of information I could get my hands on. Most people in the contest got less than 4 right.
What always surprises me, is who the Giants end up picking. I haven't been right about that since Eli was drafted and the Giants had to give up a king's ransom and trade for him because they didn't even draft him. After San Diego took Eli, I was screaming for Robert Gallery. Then after Gallery, I was screaming for Sean Taylor. About threw up when they drafted Philip Rivers...and if they insisted on a QB, then I wanted Roethlisberger. Of course, there was a plan and I didn't know what it was. It all worked out.
Bottom line: nobody knows how this draft will go. Only thing I would guarantee is that Bosa, Allen, and Q.Williams will most likely go in the top 5.
