JPP vs. Collins

BestFeature : 3/17/2019 12:18 am
Both had unreal seasons that they never repeated. JPP in 2011 and Collins in 2016. Who was more disappointing in subsequent seasons?

JPP's game dropped off much more significantly. Collins is still the same player. His weaknesses are just more glaring when absolutely no pressure up front exists
JPP was around longer...

... and was more impactful. His blocked kick in Dallas saved the 2012 season and galvanized the Super Bowl run. I'll never forget him for that.

LC had the one great year and was a real good player too.
JPP

had serious injuries....back in 2013...hand in 2015 but when healthy he outplayed collins. In 2014 he had 12.5 sacks, 77 tackles, three forced fumbles, and six passes defended.IMO Collins was overreacted.

And no one credible to play at FS alongside him.
Jpp has got to be the most underrated nyg player in ages

He shits all over what Collins did here. Collins had one big year. Jpp had a legendary year and a bunch of very good ones. 2012 he wasn’t bad at all. 2013 he should not have even played and it showed as he was hurt all year. 2014 he was terrific. 2016 he was even better until the late injury. Collins has 2016 and that’s it here.

I don't understand the Collins hate on this board.
He gave his heart and soul to this team. Was he the perfect player? No
He was a leader and played hard on some horrible teams.
2014 was a weird year for JPP

He was invisible for most of the year and then had 9 sacks in the last 5 games. Most of those teams were banged up and starting some very bad qbs (Sanchez, Mettenberger, a rookie Bortles, RG3, Shaun Hill). I was hoping to see if he had really regained form or it was just the fact we played some really bad teams but then he blew up his hand
My only knock on him,

besides the stupidity with the fireworks, was that he never developed as a player....by that I mean he was a one trick pony....he used his natural talent as a speed rusher to get to the qb, and nothing else.....he never really developed any moves.....and when he went up against a physical tackle that didn't play paddy cake with him, and nailed him right away, JPP would be stopped in his tracks and his speed was negated....

One of the worst things that happened to him in his first year was, it was too easy for him.....playing with the talent that surrounded him that year, did make it easy for him.....I think it made him not work as hard at his game as he should have......i.e., the season he reported overweight....he had skewed seasons that looked great.....there were too many games where he accumulated sacks in bunches against weak teams, and then disappeared in the big games....

Early success went to his head, and prevented him from being the dominant player he could have been...
As for Collins,
Doomster : 3/17/2019 7:43 am : link
his play just dropped off a cliff, the last two seasons, especially last year...

He was missing tackles.....people were running over him.....I laugh at the people who suggested he transition into a LBer, when you see how easily he was blocked by WR's/TE's....as for his pass coverage, it did not get better....just the opposite.....he was not worth a big contract....

You are not a leader, when you don't lead on the field....you have to lead by example.....he didn't....

Pretty sure Collins led the team in tackles every year he was here. He has been very good at what he’s good at here. He makes a lot of plays. And if they had any semblance of a pass rush or a competent free safety itd Look even better.
The worst thing a NYG player can do is

Set fan expectations high. It becomes a death sentence

Giants unlucky with JPP after his monster 2011. As somebody said,
Reese's Pieces : 3/17/2019 10:41 am : link
he was very immature in his first years with the team.

He had off years in 2012 and 2013, in 2013 due to injury. Then he has a nice comeback season in 2014, with 12.5 sacks, and then shoots himself. So 2015 is a lost season.

In the one year wonder defense of 2016, he and Vernon, while not playing up to their contracts, finally start to generate a pass rush in games 9-12, with four sacks each. Then bad luck hits again, as JPP is out for the rest of the season and the playoff game. Without JPP, Vernon is at his worst, with only a half a sack over the last five games.

So at the beginning of 2018 new management decides to rid themselves of one of their overpaid DEs. Looks like they picked the wrong one.

JPP has his best season for Tampa Bay since 2011, impressive stats in sacks, QB knockdowns, tackles for a loss. Even grades out among highest against the run.

Maybe he needed a change of scenery and a warmer climate.

He finished the season with 12.5 sacks. One and a half sacks fewer than Rice finished with in 2005.

In addition to breaking the sack-curse, he also led the defense in tackles for losses with 16. So if you’re counting, that’s 28.5 times the opposing offense was stopped in their own backfield because of Mr. Pierre-Paul.

Not only did JPP lead the team in sacks he led the team in stopping plays behind the line of scrimmage, period. He also knocked opposing quarterbacks to the ground twenty times which didn’t come as sacks, but as psychological reminders to them that he was around.
JPP was also

one of the better run stopping DL in the league.
