It's not even speculation. It's just being thrown against the wall for discussion... Does anyone think this is even a remote possibility? Would you rather keep Shepard and pay him next year? What say you? See below:
With the Giants trading Beckham, and then signing Tate to a four-year, $37 million deal, it sparks a question as to their future plans with receiver Sterling Shepard, who enters the final year of his contract. Shepard is a Patriots-type receiver. Perhaps the Patriots could entice the Giants with a second-round draft pick, and then take the money they were going to invest in Humphries and direct it to a Shepard extension one year before he hits the market. Just thinking out loud on a potential win-win-win scenario for the two teams and player involved.
It is laughable to think we will get a second or third for Shephard. He's a 26 year old slot receiver with a decent resume, but nothing that screams a real riser.
If you can get a 4th or 5th, take it in NY minute.
Or move up from 17 to get our LB
Another "gift" from the Reese/Ross team.
It's far, far better than paying him over 10M per year.
Tate doesn't make it so that we have to deal him - but he makes it much easier to do so and put the draft capital towards a younger, cheaper player who better fits what this team needs.
I agree with this. Although, NE is the worst 2 you can get.
Agreed, but the Patriots would never offer that pick.
Think long term

Wouldn’t you get that with a comp pick and a year of service? Not seeing the logic unless we don’t get any sort of comp with him leaving via FA
I say keep him, give him a year to prove himself. We will have $100 million in cap space next year. We have the means to keep him if he proves himself, sans Beckham.

I'd pull the trigger maybe even for a 3rd. I think he is grossly underrated on BBI. But I cannot see BB sending a 2nd for Shepard....
The Patriots 2nd round pick is like a 3rd.
No, it's like a 2nd. Because it's a 2nd.

I'd still take it - but I'd be stunned if they were actually offering it.
We have to remember that Shep is in the final year of his rookie deal now. So, something like a 2 or 3 would be very good compensation in a trade if we're going to let him walk. I wouldn't be able to turn that down.
If the best we can do is a 4, I'm not opposed to hanging onto him this year.

If they're letting him walk, they likely won't get a comp pick for him, since they'll have so much money off the books, we'll likely be able to spend big in FA. So no comp picks. So, as long as you're willing to let him walk for nothing.
I hope they're willing to re-sign Shep. But a trade seems more likely.

with good coaching, which I don't feel good about with this crew, SS could work with Tate. Good coaching always figures out how to properly deploy and optimize their talent. But, again, this is Shurmur we're talking about...

I'm not sure...so...bird in hand?
Look, I'm okay keeping SS. I actually like him. And, as mentioned, think good coaching could effectively deploy an offense with both SS and Tate. But that depends on Shurmur.

I agree that a comp pick probably isn't in the cards given the cap space they'll have and what they'll probably want to do to give a young QB additional help.
So, for me, ideally you trade him this year to recoup a solid asset, put the pick in your back pocket and add it to the pile. WR will be on the map as far as needs to and we'll have the draft capital to address it.
What the Giants really need is a guy with some size who can play outside the hashes and be a RZ target.
Engram does provide some flexibility as a pass catcher you can split wide and we have the more traditional TE's on the roster to deploy him that way.
But, I think Tate makes Shepard more expendable even though I am of the belief that it can work with both guys here.
I'd ideally like to build a more balanced WR group that can challenge teams at all levels. That's what we had with Nicks/Cruz/Manningham and for a short time, Plax/Toomer/Smith. Guys who compliment each other and bring different things to the fold.
To me, it's just an opportunity to re-mold the WR corps in a way that makes more sense + get younger and cheaper.
I am a fan of Shepard - I like his game. But for a 3rd round pick, I am having no hesitation about moving him.
On the same token - I'm not going to just give him away for crap if there's not a market. That's not any smarter.
