Cap Question after Beckham/Vernon trade

Elisha10 : 3/17/2019 10:27 am
Is the dead money just for 2019 and is that the salary or signing bonus or both? If not, how much is there left in dead money after 2019? Also, with regards to salary and signing bonus, I was always under the impression that the signing bonuses are the "guaranteed" money, but that the salary is off the books and the player does not receive it if they are cut, or does not receive it from the team that trades them, as in the new team picks up the tab. Shouldn't we just owe Vernon and Beckham the signing bonus, why do we have to pay their salary for 2019 too?

Dead money is money that has already been paid to the player

But has not been recorded yet on the books until the trade or release occurs. As far as counting for this year or next year, it should all be counted for this year. There used to be a rule, I think, where you can designate one player as a post June 1 cut prior to June 1st and split their cap number over 2 years. I dont think that happened with either player. I think we absorbed it all this year so we start fresh next year.

Signing bonus accelerate to current NFL season. After that, they are off the books. The Browns are now responsible for their salaries; which includes any guaranteed amount.

Since neither was cut, I don't think the June 1st rule would apply.
We have 33M in dead money,

Hopefully he is done with the blood letting for this year. Cap wise, the team is in great shape for next year, at over $103M; which will probably drop a bit when they sign the 12 draft picks (or whatever the final number is).

You can designate up to two players per year post June 1 cut. As far as salary spreading, it’s a little more complicated.

From what I've read the Giants have ~15M in 2019 cap space and ~14M required for their draft pool, and then about 77M space in 2020.

Not to say they are in bad shape, they are in good shape -- but I think they have about 25% less than that 103M number.

I was going by Over-the-Cap, which earlier in the week had the 2020 Cap at $103-104M. Today (due to the signings this week) that number has dropped to $85.9M.

Breaks down the players better. They show over $14 million needed to sign all the draft picks this year. Current cap space is short but I don't know how that will equate with the top 51. Can't seem them doing much before the draft at this point.
