With OBJ Trade, Giants Continue to be Snakebit at WR

Brown Recluse : 3/17/2019 10:41 pm
Since the Tyree helmet catch:

Steve Smith - career-ending injury
Plaxico Burress - injury, prison
Hakeem Nicks - career-ending injury
Victor Cruz - was essentially a career-ending injury
Mario Manningham - made it out of New York and but ended up on IR the next three seasons

You could include Brandon Marshall even though he was probably done by the time he signed here anyway.

Now OBJ gets traded...which is probably best for him as he was catching the injury bug as well.

This is a pretty interesting streak we have going.

Next man up is Sterling Shepard, with Golden Tate on deck.

Granted, maybe the norm is only having guys for a short period of time.
Every WR on your list had Eli as his QB. Coincidence?

Or the pact Eli made with you know who to snatch those rings from Brady and BB?

Maybe Obie was on to something?

I get why he got rid of OBJ. I think this offseason may have been the right time to do it, given the fact that the lower leg injuries that have afflicted OBJ may eventually sap his explosiveness. His attitude was also clearly an issue.

The compensation was also in line, if not in excess, of what other WRs have commanded. Cooks, for example, brought back a first round pick (later than the one we got) each time he was dealt. The fact that we got a 1st, 3rd, and Peppers (a guy only two years removed from being a first) is an excellent return.

What I don't understand is why the rush? We have well over a month until the draft. Obviously, the Giants are not cutting Eli. There is also no part II to this deal, unless you consider signing Tate as part II, and hence the need to deal OBJ to convince Tate to sign here. I don't think that is a necessity, but what do I know.

It's been discussed, but I simply have no idea how we did not get the higher third round pick from the Browns. That part is absurd to me and continues to bother me. I just don't see the rush in dealing OBJ given the situation.

NYG where WR careers go to die.
There wasn't a rush
TrueBlue56 : 3/18/2019 12:46 am : link
But the trade had to be done before the draft and before team's looked elsewhere like free agency or trading with another team for a wide receiver.

Gettleman, the owners and shurmur came to a decision that they were going to move on from Beckham and they started listening to offers. Once Cleveland's offer was in the ballpark, they started fine tuning it. Cleveland was already giving up their 1st and that would leave them with their 2nd and their two 3rd round draft picks.

You assume Gettleman didn't press for the earlier 3rd round pick, but you have no idea what discussions took place. I can see Dorsey telling Gettleman that he would not part with the earlier 3rd round pick because they would only have 2 picks in the first 3 rounds.

Gettleman got an offer he could live with and accepted it. That is all there is to it.
Maybe, player that depend in speed and quickness

Have a shorter self life?

All had great highs, played at a high level for a period of time....

My theory teams should draft WRs and corners every year....
Toomer finished a very long career
USAF NYG Fan : 3/18/2019 5:30 am : link
after the Giants. I don't remember Tyree getting a career ending injury with the Giants. I'm not sure what Manningham's injury AFTER leaving the Giants has to do with them either. If OBJ tears an ACL this coming season will we blame that on the Giants too?

Most importantly ... EVERY WR MENTIONED IN THE OP (and Toomer) HAS A RING! That's an interesting bite that snake has.
Maybe the list would be shorter

Wait.... hold on a minute..... you can't go around using things like "facts" and "the truth" in a post..... can you?

This is a bitch session on BBI and telling the truth is NOT allowed. Please stick with the warped reality that the OP is living in.

Calm down. This isnt a bitch session.
Tyree hurt his knee in training camp in 2008.
Big Blue Blogger : 3/18/2019 6:01 am : link
He spent the year on IR and never caught another pass, although he did play for Baltimore in 2009.

You can add Ron Dixon and Ike Hilliard to the list. Tim Carter too, though he was equally bad before and after the Achilles tear.

It was never reported as something that was a career ender and he was never a great receiver to begin with. He's only remembered for a SB TD catch and the helmet catch. Also, he's got a ring!

Because that is not how negotiations work. You don’t just insist on what you want until you get it. How do you know they didn’t start with a fourth and it came up to the third?

End of the day, it is a difference between pick #80 and pick #95. It’s a strange thing to be worked up about if you look at how many 3rd round picks get second contracts in the NFL.

So absurd. All the mentioned receivers got a ring. Does that mean the thread title could read, "NYG! Where WRs go to win a Super Bowl!"????

Stupid is being kind. OBJ is a pussy. Period. Just because he may be one of the most talented athletes in the NFL doesn’t mean he’s a thought dude. Let him be an Instagram star in Clevland and play his 9-12 games every year. So a quad bruise is Eli’s fault now. Ok
Some of you are getting a little too emotional.
Brown Recluse : 3/18/2019 8:00 am : link
All I’m doing is pointing out an odd trend. It has nothing to do with justifying the OBJ trade or the 2007 Super Bowl or Eli Mannings accuracy and its not a bitch fest.

Ok fine I’ll play,,,

I took your post as meaning the Giants seem to be unlucky. I have no issue with that outside of my comment that those same WRs have rings. That makes it a weird snakebite but OBJ isn't injured anymore than he has been since drafted. He missed the first several games with hamstring issues if I remember right.

It's the ridiculous posts that it's somehow Eli's fault or the Giant's fault that are absurd.

At best you could make the argument that Eli/Giants throw a lot to their receivers which pushes them too hard. I doubt the WRs would complain about that. If they are truly switching to more of a run first offense, wouldn't that help?

Very true. I guess it goes back further. Still begs the question - when does it end? That has to some kind of NFL record.
This trend goes way further back...

Check any position on any team

Hmm, I don't think so. But I assume you are being sarcastic. From what I remember:
-Steve Smith got tackled from behind vs. Vikings and that ruined his knee.
-Cruz tore up his knee with no one really that close to him in the end zone against Eagles.
-Manningham popped his flexor blocking on a run play.
-Plaxico ... well we all kow what happened here.
- Nicks? Actually I can't remember how he first hurt his foot.
Pretty sure no receiver that had 1k yards with Eli has had
Scyber : 3/18/2019 10:14 am : link
1k yards after Eli. I assume OBJ will be the first.
Ehhh not just the giants ...it is the position but yeah lets blame Eli
Jeff : 3/18/2019 10:26 am : link
According to the NFL Players Association the average career length is about 3.3 years. The NFL claims that the average career is about 6 years (for players who make a club's opening day roster in their rookie season).

Especially since we have no idea what the result of that trade will be.

Just getting OBJ in the first place especially at that point in the draft makes the whole "snake bit" thing dumb.

You missed the point, which is just that the Giants never seem to be able to hold onto receivers.

Actually they were fortunate to trade a distraction and malcontent in OBJ for a solid return. The Steelers got bent over on the Brown trade. Good job DG!
