Draft strategy in a rebuild

nybeast : 3/18/2019 8:53 am
Do you get the best players at your positions of need or do you get the most talented player on the board regardless of position? Or is there a third way, where in the early rounds, you focus on need, then in the later rounds on talent regardless of need (or vice versa) ?

What’s the draft strategy that you would employ to rebuild this roster for the post-Eli era?

Are there teams in the league such the Eagles, Patriots (obviously), Chiefs, Saints, Rams, etc., that we should emulate?
BPA for the first 3 or 4 rounds

After that the draft grade are so close, you still go for a top graded player, but there is enough choice at that grade you can choose by need.
You get people that fit your new vision.

This is why I'm betting Engram is the next shoe to drop.

Good player that is a horrible fit on the team we want to build.

If a guy doesn't fit into the power football/run stopping/pass rushing vision - don't waste resources on them. I like how relentless Gettleman is being.

Dummies are crying he doesn't have a plan. He absolutely does - and is being merciless about it. We WILL have a big, tough no-nonsense football team devoid of drama. And it will feel good to watch it.
If you get your feelings hurt by "drama"

You're not a very tough sort.

ALL DAY. Regardless of position.

Convince deluded front office that this is, in fact, a rebuild, and stop with the half-measures.
BPA ....

The team needs a new core of play makers to build around. This team also needs a new identity.

Is subjective. Patriots more often then not go need and claim BPA. For the Giants take the best players available at 6 and 17. After that, need IMO

They know it is a rebuild. They just don't say it publically. Called advertising 101

Every team has its formula for ranking players on its draft board. I would bet that "Position of Need" is one of the factors in their calculus.
BPA is a mistake in many cases

For example suppose no RT is BPA until rd 4 or 5 etc?

Then what?

Then you eventually force a dumb over-the-top FA signing.

You need both not just blindly say "BPA."
It's always a combination of the two (other factors as well)
USAF NYG Fan : 3/19/2019 4:39 am : link
and that applies to every team. Maybe some teams lean more towards need and others lean towards BPA but it's always both and then some. That includes the Patriots.

Let's say the best talent in the entire draft is a RB and he's there at #6. Still on the board is the 3rd best pass rushing talent, the 2nd best QB in the draft, and the best OT in the draft. Let's add that this QB and OT class is weak (as in not the best year for their position) and the RB and pass rushing class is very strong (as in some of the best seen in years). Considering the Giants' current needs, whom do you take?

See it's not only a combination of need vs BPA. It's also about the strength of the draft class. It's about the player and how he fits your organization. It's about filling the holes you can without over-reaching. If the need is equal for the Giants at QB, OT, and pass rusher but those classes are weak and the pass rush class is strong, I'd take the pass rusher even though he's the 3rd best pass rusher in this year's draft. Regardless of the RB being the best in the draft, the pass rusher is the BPA to the Giants BECAUSE he also fills a need. Getting another RB even of Barkley's quality would be nearly redundant. What good would two elite RBs be for a team vs 1 elite RB and 1 great pass rusher?

Then you also should factor in trading picks if the need is a lot more players (or the team has only a couple needs) but I'm not going into that.

Half measures? They are completely cleaning house, how are these half measures?
