Does BBI forget Gettleman was here from '99-'12????

Platos : 3/18/2019 2:54 pm
i love how the narrative is "theres this strange old man who came to destroy our franchise".

look at our Free Agent signings after 2012. absolute wastes and we're still complaining about him signing some familiar faces like Jonathan Stewart for one year. sheesh
I dont know why everyone is
cjac : 3/18/2019 2:57 pm : link
shitting on "change" when the norm has been the Giants being the laughing stock of the league for 2 years
Cjac, I have the exact same sentiment
soz915 : 3/18/2019 2:59 pm : link
Could they have done a thing or two differently in hindsight, sure. But we've been bad since the end of the TC years (aside from the one playoff appearance). I get people are averse to change, but the only way to not be picking in the top 6 for the 3rd year in a row and subsequent years after is to truly tear it all down and build around a young core.
There is merit to that.
Ten Ton Hammer : 3/18/2019 2:59 pm : link
At this point 'Change' would be the Giants not being the picture of mediocrity.
The guy has been a part of 9 super bowls

as a member of the front office of various organizations. Not saying that it is all him or that makes him great, but he certainly does know what a winning team looks like
Doesn't matter.
Brown Recluse : 3/18/2019 3:09 pm : link
Everything Gettleman is bad.
His resume is really impressive
Essex : 3/18/2019 3:11 pm : link
he was part of the scouting department that built the Buffalo dynasty, the championship Bronco teams of 90s, he was here for the Super Bowl in 2000, 2007, 2011, he went 15-1 in a year as GM of the Panthers. This notion that he does not know what he is doing is absurd. That does not make him infallible or right in these circumstances, but before I buy into the "Clueless Dave" narrative, I would give him some time.

I think is sometimes forgotten is that it was Reese versus Gettleman for the GM job after Accorsi left.

Who did Accorsi recommend at that time?

We know he recommended Gettleman last year.

I thought Chris Mara was Reese's main competition before Reese got the job after the 06 season.

I think he interviewed, but I was under the impression that he was/will never be seriously considered because of the obvious nepotism impression it would leave.

My memory is that Reese and Gettleman were the most serious candidates, and after Gettleman didn't get it, it appeared that he would retire soon. I'll have to back and check it out.

Reese won 2 SBs, so they obviously made rthe right choice.

no one in infallible but to think DG has zero clue nor plan is ignorant.

its a business. if he came in and said "we're blowing up the team but keeping Eli until the end of his contract" fans would explode even if it was the right thing to do.
The very fact DG was here from '99 to '12...
bw in dc : 3/18/2019 3:44 pm : link
is the very reason he shouldn't have been hired.

The "Giants Way" is a disease. And it can only be cured by avoiding those who have contracted it...

NY Post article from 2007 said the only two outside candidates were Scott Pioli (interview request turned down) and Charlie Casserly.

Internally, Stapleton wrote last year:

Gettleman, 66, joined the Giants in 1998, which was Accorsi’s first season as GM. He worked for 15 years as an executive in the Giants' personnel department, and was believed to be a finalist for the GM job with the team when Jerry Reese was hired as Accorsi's successor.

We went to 3 Super Bowls between '99-'12, winning 2 of 'em.

Huh?

frustratingly bad for years now but I’m amused by comments that claim the owners and everyone else are clueless and don’t know how to win..so were they clueless when we went through pretty much the ‘Golden Age’ of Giants football between 2006 to 2011 and won 2 Super Bowls? Bad decisions were made, but it takes time to get over the years of half-measures, bad luck and choices that didn’t work out. They’ll be good again someday, it’s a matter of when, all teams go through this. Except the Patriots as long as BB is there.

the "Giants Way" which has won us 4 SBs during my lifetime(34 years old) is a disease?

we should try the Browns, Bengals, Chiefs, Vikings, Falcons, etc ways instead huh?

This times article says that the Giants interviewed Reese, Gettleman and Mara. So, Gettleman was definitely a candidate.

"In searching for Accorsi’s successor, the Giants interviewed four internal candidates and at least one external one. Besides Reese, they interviewed the assistant general manager Kevin Abrams; the director of pro personnel Dave Gettleman; the vice president for player evaluation Chris Mara (John Mara’s brother); and the former Redskins and Texans general manager Charley Casserly."

You forgot the Lions.... can you imagine being a Lions fan.... since 1958 they've had 1 playoff win

Same amount of super bowl titles. Virtually the same amount of abominable losses and collapses.
Reese
PaulN : 3/18/2019 4:21 pm : link
Was horrendous and not the right choice and he won 1 Super bowl, he had nothing to do with the first Super Bowl, but people want to say that to justify backing that bum for the years he ruined the organization. The only reason he had success was Coughlin, that I am 100% certain of. Once Coughlin went out the door all the decision made were then his, and we all know what happened. He was handed a Super Bowl team.
Reese had nothing to do with the first SB?
RollBlue : 3/18/2019 4:44 pm : link
you do realize he was a big part of the organization prior to 2007??? Do you also know that his first draft was amazing (picking 19th, not second) and is a BIG reason they won SB42? How about SB46, JPP, Cruz, MM, Nicks, Bradshaw, had nothing to do with it. Some of you guys have an agenda, or are just plain STUPID!
LOL..

There must be two Giant Ways then!

There's this losing one that bw keeps mentioning (as if the SB's just didn't happen),

The other one is harder for him to explain. It is the Giant Way where bw fellated Parcells every chance he could and bemoaned how him leaving the franchise was going to doom us for eternity.
Reese was a scout before 2007
Platos : 3/18/2019 4:57 pm : link
that 2007 draft helped win that year but so did FA's from 2005...

that 2007 Draft was great, none of those guys outside of Deossie and Bradshaw stuck around more than 4-5 years.

go look at the 2010 draft, most of those guys didn't make it to 2012...

These threads are always the same

Everything good that happened is due solely to the efforts of the guy I like.

Everything bad that happened can be completely blamed on the guy I don't like.
