the secondary in position. I agree with his statement that there's a false narrative regarding Eli being done. There was a lot of good stuff in that 10 minute interview.
Gettleman's pre-draft offseason could not be more night and day this year to last.
The Giants really are younger, have fewer bad contracts, lots of draft picks, and are positioned well in the medium term cap (still perplexed by the Tate deal).
Get a QB to grow with in this draft and this is the opening of a new competitive window.
I questioned whether Eli was still good going into last year but you know what? He showed me, especially in the second half of the year, he still can play. With an even better OL in 2019, Im not worried about Eli.
Im more concerned now about our DEFENSE! I hope we can draft 10 guys to play defense.
to form a solid opinion on Lauletta now. If they like him and see him driving to get better, fine. Else, they should use 1-2 late picks to try to get lucky with another QB prospect.
Noone gets them all right. If he maintains his current success rate we should have more improvement this season and should turn the corner into legit contenders in 2020.
to form a solid opinion on Lauletta now. If they like him and see him driving to get better, fine. Else, they should use 1-2 late picks to try to get lucky with another QB prospect.
I think it's pretty clear they've given up in Lauletta. He's basically a camp invite who will have to fight to make the roster.
I realize it is a Giants product, but Papas leading questions
make the interview very awkward. Just ask a question, dont make a statement before you ask it. Otherwise, I got a good feeling after watching the video. Im not drinking the last 5 games Kool-Aid regarding Eli, but I am comfortable that DG is moving us down the road. We might not win, but this is going to be a different team. Also, the jury is still out on Shurmur IMO.
Many of Gettleman's FA moves last year were bad, but his draft was excellent. He was also right to trade Apple, Harrison, and Beckham, and got good value for all three. Releasing Hart and Flowers helped as well.
I also agree with his philosophy of building the trenches first.
As far as Eli is concerned, I'm somewhat less optimistic than Gettleman on how effective he can be even with a good OL, but he is certainly our best option for 2019.
We need another year to really have a chance to compete, but he's definitely moving the team in the right direction.
i like DG. i think he is a good guy and i think he is working to build the team his way. i think he is committing to eli right now because he wants the team to understand that right now, eli is the guy. he is definitely trying to build confidence the team will have in eli. after this year chances are we do draft his succesor or maybe even this draft. again i like DG and believe he will get things turned around for us
comments about the QB position are going to drive some folks on this site nuts.
I agree with him. Yes, we need to think about life after Eli. But look at the other QBs that are his age or older who I hear very little about in terms of them needing to be replaced right away. Rivers has won jack shit his entire career, I dont hear anyone calling for him to be replaced. Roethlisberger seems to be hurt constantly now and has won the same number of SBs as Eli. Brees is still a great player, but theres a reason they have been emphasizing the run so much the last few years. But little talk about his heir apparent needing to be drafted, etc. Bottom line, Eli is 38, hes had no serious injuries, proved late last year he can still sling it. The line will be improved, hell have a decent season. And much like the Shockey situation, hell be better off without Beckham calling for the ball constantly. Eli has not done well with those types of players. With a run first approach now, I can easily see him being extended into 2020 and we will potentially trade up to take his successor in next years draft to learn behind him for that one season. Hoping we go big time defense this year in the draft.
picking up little tidbits here and there, the Giants want guys who have limited injury history (proven they stay on the field) and have IQ (mentions high test scores multiple times) more of an emphasis on being a good football player than an elite athlete. Things to keep in mind.
One thing I struggled with last year was extending Beckham. It never made sense to me based on Gettlemans team philosophy:
Protect the passer
Run the ball
Rush their passer
The Giants didnt have the luxury of paying Beckham based on what I outlined above. Now, I can see the plan coming together. Improve the culture & nail the draft. This offseason is an exciting opportunity.

Eric, I can't watch that and not be excited. I want him to be right. I am scared for him. I'm person that absolutely hates to lose and I hate to be wrong nearly as much. When I'm making important decisions I want as much data as possible. The larger the sample size for that data is usually the better. I am also very leery of making decisions based on emotion. The decision to trust the Eli still has it touches all of my red flags for decision making. It doesn't make me nuts but I am frightened that the Giants and Dave Gettleman are making decisions off subjective analysis, limited data of which comes from a small sample size and emotion. In the end I have decided I don't care. In all honesty if I was Mara, the conspiracy would be true. I would have hired Dave Gettleman and told him to give Eli the best possible chance at a good exit because he deserves it.
He is cleaning house and he has a lot of picks to help bolster depth.
OBJ is gone for a reason, likely things that happened AFTER he was signed to big money.
LC is gone because he can't cover well enough. Jibrill will be the better player in Bettcher's defense.
I hope we signed DE Curry for pass rush and because he doesn't count in the comp picks calculations. We should get a 3rd round pick for LC.
Bottom line: DG must not make a mistake with his first 5 picks (rounds 1 - 3) to come out of this off-season strong. If he gets "starters" or major contributors with the 1st round (LB D. White & DL TBD); a strong interior OL prospect or starter for OC in round 2; and, DL + OT in round 3 that work out, well, you done well. If he blows pick 6 on say a Haskins well we are baked for years.
Are what matters. Last year he got to pick number two in every round of the draft. He also had Odell on the field for a lot more games then 2017. Yet we only managed to win two more games than the year before. I knew it was going to take more than one year to rebuild this team but personally I've disagreed with almost every move he's made so far. I hope I'm wrong but I doubt we'll win any more games this year than we did last.
my thoughts exactly on Eli. While most have said he's washed up, Imo I haven't seen that. I have seen a guy that has had to play behind shitty Olines and still has managed to do a good job. If he had a very good Oline, I think we would see it. I mean look how bad Tom Brady looks when he is under a lot of pressure?! Look at him in the Super Bowl? The reason he has as much success as he has is, they focus on the Oline each year to give them best protection, and they have BB.. period.
I hope that those who view this video can see that DG is an experienced professional that is working to improve the NY Giants franchise. He makes thoughtful decisions after thoroughly evaluating options available. His goal is to produce a winner one brick at a time.
I am so sick and tired of all the rants by fans that believe they know more and constantly scream that he is clueless. You know who you are. You can disagree with some of his decisions if you want to, but have some perspective and realize that he is far more capable than the average fan at doing his job.
is still that the Giants did things Mara's way in 2018 and when that (again) proved unsuccessful Gettleman was finally handed the reigns to do things his way. 2019 is all Gettleman and we're beginning to see the plan.

Shurmur was very happy with Halapio's play last year before he got hurt.
It's 2 inconclusive games for a player who's new to the position, 28 years old, and has never stuck on an NFL roster until he got here, a roster that was absolutely starved for anyone who could play the position.
I'm not saying he needs to be thrown in jail. I'm saying he's getting the same "scholarship" slide other players have gotten.
Did an actual scout think Halapio was any good? Well, let's look at Sy's comments:
Quote:
-Patrick Omameh and Jon Halapio didnt stand out in a negative way. They both allowed 1 pressure each but werent on the radar much other than that. The issue was just a lack of difference making movement. The interior of the JAC defense went where they wanted to. Its pretty bad that these two had the best grades of the OL, because by no means were they above average or even close to it.
Quote:
Another position that may need further examining is center. Brett Jones outplayed Jon Halapio, more notably in the run game. We know that Jones struggles in pass protection and he isnt one of the new regimes guys, but I trust him more than Halapio. Better movement off the ball and a more consistent level of play.
Quote:
There is a very alarming trend occurring with the guys inside. They are letting blitzers through the A/B gaps go untouched. Delayed, not delayed, whichever. Will Hernandez and Jon Halapio both had terrible misses. Late to see, slow to react. It blew up a couple of running plays.

Is it a stretch to believe that Shurmur, having played the position professionally, might be able to ascertain whether or not Halapio has the skill set necessary to develop into a quality starter?

The whole line was a mess back then. So what? I'm sure if you asked Sy's opinion on Solder and Hernandez in week 15 vs week 2, it'd be pretty different. There's a good chance the same would happen for Halapio if he stayed healthy.
No one is expecting Halapio to be the next Shaun O'Hara. But he should be solid until they find a long term replacement.

It's not a stretch. I hope he does. I'd still like to see that position be a competition for the best player to win the job rather than to be content with going into 2019 because of Halapio's 2 games in 2018.
What you're doing is simply assuming that any bad lineman would be better over the course of the season. There's absolutely no logic behind it. Hernandez was a fairly highly touted rookie and second round pick. Halapio is a waiver-wire scrub who's bounced around the league and played very little before the Giants picked him up.
Why would anyone give this staff the benefit of the doubt when they did such a poor job last year?
I know, I'm such a weirdo for not finding much to like

Please explain exactly what they did *such a poor job* with last year? Are you really going to define all of their work on a few shit signings like Stewart and Omameh? Thats hardly fair. They got more right than they did wrong last year. And this offseason has been MUCH better than the last one.
Do you think Pat Shurmur did a good job last year? Yes or no.
I think Pat Shurmur did some good things and some things I wasn't crazy about. His game management was shit at times. There were questionable play calls and then there were play calls that I really liked. I'd like to see what he can do with his own QB and a stable line.
This isn't about Pat Shurmur though. It's the offseason, and its about the general manager and personnel decisions.
RE: RE: I know, I'm such a weirdo for not finding much to like
Except, Im willing to bet the farm that youre not much different on baseball threads or other sports threads
Hope you have somewhere nice to stay when I take your farm, then. The Yankees are a well run organization, although I wasn't crazy about their offseason choices. I'm not negative at all about them. Same with Virginia basketball. The Knicks are even more of a horror show than the Giants and the Rangers are heading into that territory, so yes, since it's warranted I'm pretty negative on them too.
I'm optimistic when I have reasons to be optimistic.
is scheduled to make $645K this year (0.33% of cap) with zero dead money if he doesn't make the team. And it's March 19th.
But hey, get your panties in a bunch if it suits you.
I'm more and more convinced that people wake up everyday looking to be miserable and take anyone down with them that they can.
It's not about the money he's making. It's about their stated objective of rebuilding the offensive line and whether Halapio is actually good or not. There don't seem to be options behind him with any track record. They haven't met with any centers in free agency either. ANd they could draft one, but then you'd be relying on a rookie.

You can only offer a reaction to what's in front of you. And they continue to say they like Halapio a great deal.
Of course things could change. And when or if they do, and we have that info to go by, opinions will change.
about all this stuff, but many fall to recognize that we are sitting at the bottom of the NFC East and not very competitive at a basic level with last seasons team. Time for a big rebuild and hopefully with hungry players that will establish a culture of winning.
He was very strong on that... stronger than I had ever heard him.
I heard his New England accent when he pronounced 'smart' as 'smaat'.
Without directly saying it he implies that Eli will be just fine provided he gets some protection.

-Kind of an asshole
-Not shy to make unpopular decisions
-Not overpaying
I think Beckham was a Mara/Shurmur decision last summer. Well see where it goes, Im excited. It feels like we are rooting for a team again.
