Remmers comment by Gettleman on Sirius

Racer : 3/18/2019 6:47 pm
Not mentioned that I saw here. In addition to the presser and the appearance with the all-knowing, DG was on 'Moving the Chains' at 3pm.

When asked about further potential FA signings, DG said:

"...we had Mike Remmers in here last week and you know he just had a back surgery....so you know, he's in the conversation...". First I heard about a back, anyone else? "Failed physical" with MIN makes more sense now.

DG also mentioned that he had a private visit with Peppers when preparing for that draft in Carolina. He commended his ball skills/awareness and ability to play the deep middle.
Oof right tackle

Is probably coming early in the draft
He's had back issues going back to 2017

Reading between the lines, that's actually pretty funny

Essentially Remmers agent puts it out through twitter that they're going to shop the Giants offer. Gettleman responds by going on the radio and making Remmers back surgery public knowledge.

Love it.

It's been posted on multiple threads. He had a couple of injury issues last year, including the back injury. He failed his team's physical.

Didnt read specifically about a surgery. Was aware he had back issues that impacted availability/level of play.
Ideally
Jay on the Island : 3/18/2019 7:15 pm : link
The Giants would sign Remmers to a 1-2 year deal and then draft Jawaan Taylor, Andre Dillard, Cody Ford, or Dalton Risner at 17 or in round 2. Taylor or Dillard would be ideal as they are better fits at LT while Ford's best position is inside at guard and Risner's is at right tackle or center.
OL and bad backs
.McL. : 3/18/2019 7:19 pm : link
are a bad combination.

I prefer to walk away from those situations.

I remember debating Petitgout with Eric back in the day. Petitgout has been having some trouble with recurring back spasms.

Sure enough, the Giants walked away from him, and he never did much after he left.

Jumbo was never the same after he hurt his back...

Jumbo had a bad back from day 1. He was always in pain.

the draft. Maybe they pick someone with a first or second rounder.

Don't want to debate it, its too long ago for clear memory.

I was under the impression he had a significant injury to it somewhere around the 93 season. It was a year he was selected to the Pro-bowl more on rep than deeds, but didn't play because of the back.
I found this
.McL. : 3/18/2019 7:35 pm : link
I think this is the injury I remember...
He had surgery for a herniated disc.
He was never the same after as I recall.

https://www.nytimes.com/1994/03/17/sports/pro-football-elliott-gladly-leaves-pain-behind.html

But I can't honestly remember if he had issues earlier in his career...
Is there anyone left to play RT
Bluesbreaker : 3/19/2019 1:33 am : link
WILLIAMS resigned with Panther ..
what about Donald Penn...?
But I also read here
Bill in UT : 3/19/2019 1:39 am : link
That Minnesota was willing to re-sign him at a lower price, so the injury was not disqualifying

Modern medicine is light years ahead of the Jumbo Elliot days. You can have a discectomy and a walk home the same day. Rehab takes weeks but if it's a disc it's not a huge deal anymore.

Good point...I did a search and found a couple of articles that spoke about the improvements and reduced invasiveness of fusion surgery.

To your point, when I think about the last 10 years or so, I can't recall very many OL careers being cut short by back issues.

Still I have to wonder just how well any procedure holds up under the stress of 300+ pound NFL players arching and driving...

But your point is well taken.
