Why Dave Gettleman has earned an A+ thus far...

E-Hive Member #1 : 3/18/2019 7:09 pm
It is impossible to judge a GM’s results one transaction at a time and it is pointless to try to gauge a GM’s vision before his tenure has a chance to unfold. At this moment in time, post Free Agency 2019 (at least the bulk of it), I think there enough transactions have occurred and time has passed to give Dave Gettleman a grade as a GM thus far.

My Grade A+

(Point 1) The Offensive Line: From Flowers - Pugh - Richburg - Jerry - Hart & lt;---& gt; Solder - Hernandez - Halapio/Pulley - Zeitler - Wheeler/FA/Draft Pick: WOW! What an overhaul. In his interview with Bob Papa today, Dave said something that really helped me appreciate our o-line NOW even before RT is figured out. He said that bringing in Zeitler, a proven stud RG with Wonderlic results off-the-charts, "settles down the right side". We still need a RT, but even with an average or slightly below average RT in place, Zeitler + Player X results in an above average side of the line. Think about all of the stunts on the right side that killed us last year. With Zeitler in place, communication between the RT and RG we will be strides ahead of last year.

(Point 2) Eli Manning: My handle speaks for itself how I feel about this player. Is he as good as he was physically in 2011? No. But he still has the skills, is even more experienced and most importantly HE CAN WIN IN THE PLAYOFFS. He came to-mother-fucking-play in Green Bay in 2016. Real Giant Fans know this. I have been spending the past half a decade talking to other sports fans about how Eli is portrayed as a bad QB because of how Sports Center and the media represents him. I tell them, those of us that have never missed one play of Eli Manning's career know that he is an elite QB. Yes, he has bad games, and has plays that leave you scratching your head. And sometimes, in big moments, when you need Eli to shine, he doesn't. And he needs a quality O-line to be good. These statements are true. But he is good enough in the regular season to lead a winning team, he is the best teammate and leader you can ever ask for, he makes players around him better, and if you get to the playoffs his game elevates to another level. FINALLY, WE HAVE A GM WHO SEE THIS AS WELL. Dave started telling the media that Eli's narrative is wrong, and people can't get off of this portrayal because it is baked in their brains. HE IS SPOT ON. So, what does he do? He focuses on the O-line to give Eli the time he needs, and together with Pat Shurmer, is building an offense with a running game where Eli can thrive off of play action pass and throwing the ball less. Well done Dave, thank god you are our GM.

(Point 3) - Got rid of Odel: Listen guys, I loved watching Odel more than the next guy. His rookie season made watching games bearable, and quite honestly, I looked forward to each Sunday even in a losing season, which has never happened in my lifetime. His game against Josh Norman and the redskins, the first game after the Carolina game, when he juked him with a spin move next to the sidelines, is my top 5 favorite plays of ALL TIME. I love his spirit, energy and ability to go 99 yards on any play. BUT, he had to go. His energy was a cancer for this team. When he was upset, everyone felt it. He made the HC cringe often. He cared more about beating Jerry Rice than winning Super Bowls. And most importantly, he went on an interview and bashed ELI, the coach and the organization. He had to go, and Dave got a hell of a haul for him, even though he knew how hated he may be for it. Bravo Dave, you have balls, and stuck to your vision. And I'll throw this in there. I have been critical of Mara because it seems like the further away we get from Wellington's passing, the worse our organization has become. Mara could have told Dave not to trade Odell. As an owner, allowing your GM to trade the most marketable player in the NFL, someone with Michael Jordan type fame, is very hard to do. But Ownership is allowing the people they hire to do their jobs, and a GM who faces obstacles from ownership that stops his vision to come to fruition, will fail. Kudos Mr. Mara!

(Point 4) 2018 Draft was a hell of a draft. Great picks, and I have a lot of faith this continues with more good drafts to come.

(Point 5) He got rid of Pugh, Perkins, Wing, Eli Apple, Darian Thompson, Hart, Jerry, Jerrel Adams and Roger Lewis. All players that in my opinion do not belong on winning football teams. These are the types of player that in the Jerry Reese Years would stick around on a roster for a year or 2 or 3 too long.

(Point 6) He isn't afraid of admitting mistakes. Al a Jon Stewart, trading OBJ after the contract and Omameh. You gave it a try, it didn’t work out, cut your losses.

(Point 7) He has maintained complete trust and partnership with our Head Coach. Not sure if it has been easy to do so behind closed doors, but regardless, this is crucial for a winning football team. He is always overly positive when talking about Pat Shurmer, and vice versa.

(Point 8) He drafts, signs and keeps quality football players, with INTELLIGENCE that are consummate professionals with high character. Golden Tate, Alec Ogletree, BJ Hill, Saquaon Barkley and the list goes on and on. Next thing you know we are going to have a roster of guys that are mentally strong, know how to play the game, play the game with passion and do it together as a team.

You don't change culture through gimmicks, you change culture by building a team with players and coaches who embody the traits of the culture you are aiming for.

AND FINALLY, the guy got cancer and beat it last year. Never made it about him, he just showed the same toughness that he demands from his team. I freaking love this guys!

I think it's already clear that the odds on that lotto ticket got worse, not better. But he had a good preseason last year and there may still be some hope. It's easy to see why they thought he fit and there's a reason he fell to the 4th round in the first place.

I don't think you can "fall" to the 4th round if no one ever thought or predicted you should be drafted earlier than that round.

What round was he projected to go before the Giants' selected him? Was he considered more likely a UDFA target?

I don't know what information you're basing your post on but I saw mock drafts that had Lauletta going in the 3rd and even as high as the 2nd round. I believe he was the MVP of the Senior Bowl. Usually there's at least one team that cares about that shit and takes a chance on the MVP of the Senior Bowl, I don't think they usually go undrafted.

A lot of people thought he had a shot at being a good QB. The only thing he lacked was arm strength and most analysts were saying if he could get his arm strength to an NFL level then he had a shot at being a good pro. Unfortunately I think it turned out there was a lot more missing from his game than just arm strength.
Oh good

Reese received a pretty good team foundation from the Young and

Accorsi days. The problem was Reese could draft skill positions but let the foundation crumble. The “o” line wilted on age and injury and Reese couldn’t fix it. The “d” went the same way. I wonder if Reese ever interviewed his draftees or looked at their wunderlic to explain the high busts like Flowers, Apple, and others.
DG has returned to both fixing the foundation and to drafting not only physically talented players, but those who also have the mental talent to integrate into a team and make it better by more than themselves.
So DG gets an A+ compared to Reese, but both gm’s grades need years to mature and be evaluated. We haven’t had a George Young in too long a time.

He made that Jonathon Stewart signing and literally everyone on this site collectively said WHAT THE FUCK. There were a few who said trust in DG he knows what he's doing, he's changing culture, etc. DG proceeded to say the use of analytics in NFL management was "nonsense" in that same Jonathon Stewart press conference. We all Stewart was DONE from the first time he touched the football in preseason. To the point that we were actually disappointed we were going to have to cut Martin and/or Pressly (two street FAs) just to keep the massive waste of space Stewart. Perhaps it was just "one mistake" but that whole Stewart thing was so obviously doomed from the beginning and we all saw it, and the fact a "seasoned veteran" GM like DG made that mistake (all the while denouncing the new advancements in analytics that have been clearly linked to success in professional sports) just scared the crap out of me. I'm not afraid to say I think the Tate signing will prove to be a larger scale version of the Stewart. Every player has his last useful day in any sport and you DO NOT want to be the team that is paying him 10s of millions of guaranteed dollars in the years after that day has come.

And I don't see how anyone can have the balls to give him an A+ when he hasn't won anything yet. We won 2 more games last year than we did in 2017 and that was WITH Saquon and a full wide receiving corps (which we did not have in 2017). He's made a few moves this off-season and we haven't even gotten to the draft and you're already sending him home with a report card?

Yeah not really going to comment on the Tate stuff but the press conference is what really rubbed me the wrong way. That and having all my friends that are football fans and in tech make fun of me mercilessly. Which also would have been fine, I make fun of my friends for things too, if I didn't have to watch various errors this year including one of the worst time out blunders at the end of the first half in the Saints game that I've ever witnessed.

If you want to mock progress it better be because you are better than the results of it unequivocally. Otherwise no need to say anything other than "we did our work and we liked the decision we made."

Not saying these things are equally bad but if someone makes one racist / sexist / whatever comment to we allow for excuses like it was just one thing or they didn't really mean it they actually believe the opposite! No, no we don't. So I don't know why people are so comfortable saying that in this situation.

He meant it to some extent, to what is debatable but to any extent and in light of the fact that we don't really have the staff that says we buy in and with other teams using them very effectively to win, yeah, this one press conference can't be ignored when looking at if he is the right man for the job. (I will say what he has done could end up working but he isn't exactly playing the probabilities well with the draft a RB high with a old and overpriced QB angle alone)

Basically, it boiled down to us have 12 picks this year, at least 4 decent starters from last year (add Beal to that makes 5), currently 7 picks next year, and 120+M in cap money next season.

Gettleman is building a team for the 1990s
PhilSimms15 : 3/19/2019 5:05 am : link
—not only rejects analytics, he makes fun of those who practice it. Yet, the entire sports world has acknowledged that data is incredibly important in all aspects of team building, Certainly not the only factor, but an important factor.

—building a running team and drafting a RB very high again goes against today’s rules in both game play and the salary cap. Today’s analytics clearly show a pass is actually a higher percentage play than a run and paying a running back top dollar is a waste of precious cap dollars.

—signing 30+ year old FA. Again, data shows that this usually fails. And the Giants history in signing FA over 30 is poor with a few exceptions.

—the focus on “hog mollies” is a fun phrase and definitely a throw back but speed and power on the lines is now more important than heft because of today’s offenses.

Maybe Gettleman is right in building an old school team. But if so, he flies in the face of data, and pretty much every other team in the league.

Is he that smart or does he just think he is that smart?

You use your 5th year option for 8M, instead of giving him a 5 year contract, saving 13.5M.....Now you have the option this year of franchising him and trading him, and you aren't 16M in a hole......

Because OBJ wouldn't have played on the 5th year option and/or would have been a massive whiny bitch the entire year. Can you imagine that train wreck of an interview he would have had if he didn't get paid? You can't have that for a first year head coach.
Easy to sit back in your chair and make these comments that are not realistic.

You are such a pretentious know nothing piece of shit, it's almost laughable. Almost because you're humorless and fucking vapid. No one cares about a fucking thing you say, ever, and I mean ever. You are fucking clueless and stupid, the true duality that few obtain, so congratulations on that. You fucking moron.

He wouldn't have played? Then he wouldn't have been paid...and guess what would happen to that endorsement money?

The Giants would have known what they had right away in OBj....A guy who would go out there and play for his team mates and a huge contract next year, or a problem child that they should get rid of....some other idiot GM would have traded for him, thinking they could placate the guy with money.......I guess you would rather waste cap dollars....

#9. Has a great accent.. some people say the best accent! Some people don't know it, he knows it, but some people don't know it. Definitely not a fake accent.

#10. Drafts from TOP school with people who have the biggest brains! A lot of people are learning this now for only first time!

#11. Employs the best people. I hear people say this all the time. And it's true. Very true. I hear them say it. Even OBJ thanked Jose on his way out. BEST sloppy joes in NFL.

#12. His best adviser is himself and he listens to himself all the time! Chris Mara is low IQ!

#13. He didn't go on a wide-out hunt. NO WIDE-OUT HUNT! Traded BEAUTIFUL wide-out and then just got another one. No time for hunting!

#14. Prominent NFL insiders are saying these moves are TOP MOVES and he is SMART to make them! They AGREE with Gettlemen.

#15. He is building WALL of greatness in front of Eli! The previous administration tried to build the wall but FAILED. He is doing it. He is addressing the CRISIS on our offensive border!

Nice post, that is exactly what I was reminded of, a certain Cheetos headed moron! We'll have the BEST PEOPLE...

the Young and Accorsi years??? Have you gone back and looked at EA's drafts, especially the OL? Some of you guys try to re-write history.
As far as Gettleman having fixed anything, he was picking SECOND overall last year, spent a HUGH amount of moneuy on SLoder and Omameh, had a relatively healthy team, and went 5-11. The O-line may be improved this year, let's see how the defense looks.
Reese "fixed" the defense with a spending spree in 2016 - that defense was very good. Only lasted a year. I still say we keep getting the head coach wrong, until that get's fixed.........

Barkley is a generational player? What is Elliott or Gordon or Gurley before he got hurt?

Beckum is a generational player? What is A Brown or J Jones or AJ Green or Hopkins or Larry F?

Generational player = top 5 at his position in the current moment?

I'll try
The following would be considered a generational player:
LT
Joe Montana
Barry Sanders
Jerry Rice
Deion Sanders
Bo
Tom Brady
Peyton Manning
Larry Fitzgerald
Michael Strahan

Players that transcended the game to a high level for multiple years
