The Yankees and Gonzalez have agreed to a minor league contract, report Joel Sherman and Ken Rosenthal. He gets a $3M base salary at the MLB level with incentives based on starts.
Gio also gets an April 20th opt-out if he’s not on the big league roster, which indicates he is not an Opening Day roster candidate.
Perfect. Have been suggesting this for a while - makes sense. No real commit or risk. Won't hurt us if he sucks or doesn't pan out. Just gives us another option and better depth.
of emergency signing. If Sevy gets back, Gio stays at SWB or Trenton and opts out. If Sevy or CC has a big set back, they can bring him up to fill in until they are ready.

deal, and if he makes the big club, he gets $3M. April 20th opt-out if he isn't on the big club.
Great deal. He won't be ready for the start of the year, but he adds much needed veteran depth.
He apparently just threw 107 pitches in a simulated game. So arm appears to be stretched. His control and command may not be there, but don't count him out...
right away. But he's just an okay starter and I don't think the starters who sign late into spring training like this start off the season very well. It might take him a month or two to round into form. Hard to get excited about but it's nice to have extra insurance. Maybe he'll surprise.
he may end up the 5 in late April if the in-house options scuffle and Sevy is out at length but without a spring training, even with side sessions he's not going to be ready to go in three weeks..
particularly WRT the first time through the lineup, would make him a pretty ideal opener, as would the fact that he throws left-handed. Tarpley (also a lefty) wouldn't necessarily be a bad choice in that regard either, especially because his repertoire is so different from the Yankees' righty arms like Cessa, German, and the bullpen guys.
Cessa for 3 or 4 innings, follow with German for 2 or 3 innings and let the boys wrap it up. Opener, Yankees style...
This probably won't happen. While they only need a 5th starter once before April 15, they don't want to burn their long men in a single game and then get caught short if one of their SP gets knocked out early.
Loaisiga go to Trenton or SWB is best for him. He has had a rough spring, but his lack of innings is pretty stark.
Yeah, this Gio signing reeks of a big insurance policy with Sevy and CC still not ready and a chance they may not be ready until longer than projected. And Gio does not necessarily need to be completely stretched out because of the opener style game where one of the young guys can come in and follow up for one time through the order.
Unsaid of course is that anything else should happen and another starter need to miss a couple of rotations they would be fooked.

Many possibilities rich - even that early when it is cold the SP rarely go deep and Cessa and German might be needed in those games.
and when comparing their options you have to figure he has the advantage. The other option costs them what - $3MM? I know the Yankees are loaded but that's real money.

Yes it is real money, but $3m for s starter is pretty inexpensive for a vet.

Absolutely if they think he will be needed for the year - it's a great price.
It's not such a great price if they need to get less than 20 innings out of him and they have another guy who can do a similar job without paying the money. That was my point.

Ok, I see. Not sure how that works as it is a minor league contract and he only gets the money if he is on a MLB roster - so if he pitches a game for the Yanks, does he get the whole $3 mill? They can also trade him to a team for a bag of doughnuts if he is no longer needed.
Hopefully we won't even really need him at all - but It's good insurance and smart for the Yanks to do. Between the uncertainty regarding Severino and the possibility that CC may struggle or not be himself, it'll protect us a bit more.
Cessa is having a really strong spring, but I still have serious reservations about him. German still has to work on his control and Johnny Lasagna really just needs innings and health.
We still have some other internal options who could emerge later... Montgomery should find himself back in the mix later in the year and be an option if needed. Adams needs to restablish himself @ SWB. He's got a ways to go.
the Blue Jays just announced they were going to markedly increase their minor league compensation and now it looks like the dam might be breaking. It'd be good news for minor leaguers, who have traditionally been shunted in collective bargaining accords. Link - ( New Window )
Looks like a 3M base for Gio - 300k per start. Can max out at about 12M this year if he stays with the team and is actually part of the rotation the whole way (or most).
As we know, he can opt out on April 20 if he's not up with the big club/making starts.

So if the choice is between Tarpley making 5 starts as an opener (3 innings approximately - total 15 innings) or Gio making the same number of starts/innings, the cost would be $4.5MM for choosing Gio.
At that point they're paying him $300K per inning.
It's not killer money, but it has to factor into the decision. I'm sure if they feel good enough about Tarpley and Sevy's recovery they would probably save that money and let Gio opt out on April 20th.
Happ, CC, Gio and then Monty. I'd like some variety in what we throw out there.

3mm if in majors, plus insentives on performance and starts..
Nah you're right - that's the current timetable. I don't think that has changed as far as I know.

Gio as your #5 is not bad to go into the season
Tanaka
Paxton
Happ
CC
Gio
