Gettleman trading OBJ ?

Archer : 3/19/2019 9:25 am
I listen to Gettlemanís various news conferences and for the most part I thought he came out well
However, there is one point that I do not understand
Gettleman said that he was not looking to trade OBJ, but, the offer from Cleveland was so great that he could not pass it up
This was a football decision

Using this logic if a team came along and offered three first round picks and a player would he trade Barkley? I donít think that there is a price that he would trade Barkley

When he is saying that the reason that he traded OBJ was he had an offer that he could not refuse
Clearly there was a lot more to the decision
Well yeah

But he's not going to be totally honest and out down a hard worker in Odell. He wanted to be done with the drama and I don't blame him but he's also not a jerkoff who wants to make people feel like crap.
He was trying not to throw OBJ

under the bus. Clearly, the way OBJ comported himself was a big part of the evaluation. GMs are paid to shade the truth.
I think you answered your own question

To whatever degree OBjís behavior contributed or ownership was involved, heís not going to air that in public.

He reveals a lot more in press conferences than Reese ever did, but heís still not going to outright say they decided OBJ was a problem and needed to be moved. Claiming it was a purely football decision may well be BS, but heís not going to admit that.
You can't compare the personality types

of Barkley and Beckham. And that would absolutely be a factor.

I think if Beckham had a lower-key approach to things, and this kind of production, even with the injuries the Giants wouldn't have been listening.

And that's the thing. There's got to be a motive to pick up the phone and listen in the first place.
He said it was purely a football decision because he's not going

to throw the player under the bus in public. That would be a shitty thing to do, no?

As far as what he said about offers and whatever...I mean, this is minutiae. We all know OBJ was traded because he was a problem child and there's a good possiblity the Giants got spooked by the AB situation. I have no problem with that. I think the market for this trade was set at 2 first round picks. How many teams do you really think were going to give that much up? I think we got the best return we were going to get.

As he said if you make the phone call to trade someone, you immediately lose value, teams know you want to trade. Maybe that call to Buffalo, was a way to let out for the right price OBJ could be had (along with the 49er offer).

Do you think any GM or coach is going to tell everything to the media?

What he really wanted to say was Beckham was a pain in the ass and getting 3 players to get rid of the drama was too good to pass up.
Come on

We all know there was more to it than that.
He wasn't going down that road.
How hard it is for folks to understand?
So, for many on this thread, if OBJ had...

...the exact same production but had a "Saquon Barkley-like" personality, are you saying OBJ would still be a Giant?

Yes, he clearly would be on the Giants if there wasn't the drama cloud around him.
OBJ was traded? Holy shit!

So you're saying that DG isn't being completely honest with the press
JohnB : 3/19/2019 10:32 am : link
there maybe a few facts he decided to withhold.....

I think every GM does the same thing.

We know for a
mittenedman : 3/19/2019 10:33 am : link
fact the Giants have been talking to the 49ers for a long time about trading OBJ.

It's just like people getting confused about him saying "we didn't sign him to trade him". It's a public negotiating stance. Simple stuff.
As I remember it
Beer Man : 3/19/2019 10:38 am : link
DG did say back around the trading deadline, that everyone was on the table except Barkley.
