NFT: Yanks vs Rays - ST

section125 : 3/19/2019 1:09 pm
Green starting as opener.

Game actually being played - in half of South Florida it is pouring.
Judge with a rare defensive miscue leading to a run...
Dunedin81 : 3/19/2019 1:17 pm : link
get that out of your system now.
Green working

on the high strikes. Have seen a couple sliders too.
Green fools Keirmeyer

and the umpire too. You could see Gary jawing and the ump jawing back. But Green gets the groundout to end the inning.

Rays pitcher Glasgow - big

guy 6'8" - avoids Judge like the plague with 4 pitch walk and the Ks Stanton on 3 pitches.

Gary rips the double off the wall, Judge scores from 1st. 1-1.
Cessa looks really

sharp in 1-2-3 top 2nd. Ball has lots of life - seems to explode out of his hand....anyone else seeing that?

FWIW, Kay has O'Neill and Tino in the booth today. Great to hear Tino and Paul rib each other.

Yep, two top of the line guys.
FWIW, this Rays pitcher

Glasgow has a very difficult motion to time. I think this guy is going to give teams trouble. Hard to tell his offspeed and fastball apart...
Gardy steals 2nd

Judge drives him in with his 1st single of ST. Followed by Stanton hammering a double to LF corner as Judge scores from 1st...

Cessa - gives up

the 2 bagger, but gets 2 Ks..I know it is ST, but he looks VG. Decent Rays lineup.
Of Johnny Lasagna, Domingo German and Cessa...
Dunedin81 : 3/19/2019 2:24 pm : link
Cessa was far and away my least favorite starting option coming into the spring, but he has easily been the most impressive of the three of them. That curve is getting swings and misses - ugly swings - from lefties and righties, he's confident, he's inducing weak contact. If this version of Cessa goes north, he could be a quality rotation piece.
Judge
Stu11 : 3/19/2019 2:26 pm : link
Had an interesting convo the other day with the wife, daughter(14 yo sports nut) and her friend's Dad. Started with my wife and daughter talking about LT and just how good he was due to having watched a bit of his "A football Life" with me earlier in the day. I pointed out the best way to explain him was that every once in a long while an athletic freak comes along that just stands out from much of the human race in size/speed/power etc...LT was that kind of freak and Judge is that way too. There's just no way a guy of his size should be able to be as fast and athletic as he is. The guy is a gold glove level defender with an accurate rocket of an arm and can easily go 1st to 3rd and score on doubles, while routinely hitting balls upwards of 450 feet.

Agree on Cessa - I was hoping he would be traded...early but he looks much better. Maybe it is confidence.
Cessa - 4 shut out innings,

Cessa looks different. Not sure what it is - but Murti was on WFAN over the weekend and was saying that Cessa just looks like a "man" now - like he's grown into himself and there's something about him this year that's more pronounced and confident.

Another really impressive outing for him today.

I'd agree that going into camp, he was probably behind Loaisaga and German for me - but he's having a better spring than both.

Johnny is struggling a bit, but German has actually looked pretty good too. Love his stuff - hope he can really put it all together.

But, this has been a really encouraging spring for Cessa - I'll admit I'm intrigued and want to see if there's anything to this or not.
the one thing that gives me a little hope about Cessa
Greg from LI : 3/19/2019 4:02 pm : link
Is that he is an infielder that converted to pitcher in the minors. Maybe he finally figured something out.

arcarsenal : 3/19/2019 4:11 pm : link
Cash seems mildly uncertain about Betances - apparently Betances doesn't feel as strong and hasn't felt like he's been able to get full extension, etc.

Did an MRI on his shoulder and he has inflammation there.

Apparently his throwing program was interrupted somewhat with the birth of his child and they think that had something to do with it.

Calling it a shoulder "impingement" but everything else looks fine.

Anti-inflmmatories, will start season on the DL, and will have him slow down his throwing a little bit before he ramps back up

Yanks basically "calling time out" on him to hopefully prevent him missing more time down the road.

The pen should be fine, so I'm fine playing a cautious approach.

Don't really care about ST results at all... but I think we're about to rattle off something like our 6th straight win and haven't lost in the last 12-13 games. Bats are looking nice and warm.

Gardy having a really nice spring. Obviously we know Judge has been hitting all month. Sanchez had a pair of doubles earlier today. Bird and Voit are both hitting.

Frazier has struggled. Obviously Hicks is still shelved.

Britton looked sharp today... really like that sharp downward plane Cessa has on his breaking ball right now. I don't remember seeing as much of that before from him. He seems a little less reliant on his FB.

arc, agree on Cessa - that is why I was saying earlier the ball seems to be exploding out of his hand - something was different than last year. Maybe that is it.

Yes Frazier really struggling - needs ABs with less pressure.

Good thing with all the great BP signings is being able to shut down a Betances for a few weeks. He probably overthrew tring to make up for being late.

Green does not look exceptionally sharp to me. Tino was saying saying he threw high FBs last year - he was always a low and away guy to me. I'm probably wrong, but I don't remember him upstairs.

Cessa needs to start for Sevy to start the year
RasputinPrime : 3/19/2019 5:32 pm : link
he has certainly earned it this spring and we need to know if he can transition that into the season. Looks like he is using his 2-seamer more and more effectively. His four-seamer is just too straight.

Frazier needs to meditate. The kid is a couple of clicks from changing the narrative.

Bird and Voit should be fun. If they can continue to battle each other we need to find a way to get them both on the 25.

Bro, every team has injuries. Do you think baseball players are robots? They get hurt all the time.

He has always been a top 30 prospect in baseball who put up great numbers in the minor but then disappointed in the majors. He is 6'8" and pitchers like that take a lot longer to figure things out but his control still stinks and that is why he probably belongs in the bullpen.

That was sweet. You could tell from the sound the ball made interacting with the bat that it was leaving the park.

Hicks' injury and Gardy's hot spring should allow us to at least carry both 1B for the opening series.

I'm guessing Stanton gets those games in LF, Gardy mans CF, Bird gets the call @ 1B and Voit will DH.

I'm interested to see how Boone works DJ into the lineup.

A few options... probably in order from how he'll use him most to how he'll use him least...

DJ @ 2B, Torres over to SS, Tulo to the bench
DJ @ 1B to give Voit/Bird a blow
DJ @ 3B if we want to DH Miggy or prioritize defense late in a game

It's going to get even tighter when Didi is back in the fold this summer.

But - this stuff always works itself out and spots clear. Good to have options. We'll see what Tulo has left. He looks good physically - but hasn't really had it going with the stick yet.
Tulo has been erratic at the

plate. Sometimes he's on, some does he looks lost. You would expect that from a guy who missed over a year. The rest of the team can carry him until he gets his eye and hands back.

But somewhat more important, Gary with his two crushed opposite field doubles.
