How Chris Snee's exit could be similar to Eli's exit

BigBlueDownTheShore : 3/19/2019 2:50 pm
Chris Snee didn't officially retire until after 2013 season. He was IR'd during Summer Camp so that he could collect the money he was owed.

We can debate on whether that was because Coughlin was his father-in-law or if it was the Giant's were just rewarding him for being an excellent Giant for his entire tenure, but they didn't have to pay him that year, and they surely could have cut him before it ever got to training camp.

On that note, this year is a year where we are eating a ton of dead cap to free up space for next offseason. Eli got his $5 million dollar bonus. If for some reason, we could trade for Rosen (I'm not advocating for it), or draft a QB of the future that's ready to play (doubtful on this option), it doesn't mean we necessarily have to stay with Eli. Eli is probably more tradeable at this point as we probably eat the bonus.

I don't think it will happen, just wanted to point out that we have paid Giants Legends for being good soldiers before, and it could possibly happen again.
Just to be clear, There are no guarantees that

the QB of choice in 2020 will be there or obtainable, despite the capital we might try to use. Other teams most likely will have as much or more capital than we do.

Also, anything can happen next college season. Injury or just plain suckiness..

I never understood the Snee thing either

I'm all for these guys getting paid. But couldn't the Giants have just paid him a $5M consulting salary instead, so that it didn't hit the cap? Unless there's some insurance claim that happens that I'm unaware of, it seems like this loyalty is costing the Giants for no reason.
Did you just pull this off of the other thread

Yeah I was the one that wrote it. I figured it was a good talking point just in general.

Its' a valid question...

But I don't know if Eli is going that route. I think he is definitely the QB in 2019 unless the wheels fall off early.

has been pretty adamant that Eli is the starter this year and that the Giants want no part of Rosen. The draft is going to be interesting.

I agree and to be honest, if we draft someone Eli will be here for the year.
Don't think Eli is ready to retire
Steve in ATL : 3/19/2019 3:16 pm : link
will probably play for a different team in 2020.
Eli has a no trade clause.

Eli isn’t going anywhere.

Gettelmen thinks the defense will be better, line will be better, running game will be better and Eli will be better.

Time will tell.

I understand that. I'm just saying if he were to wave it, he's easier to trade after taking on that $5 Mil bonus.

The real conundrum would be what to do if Eli has a good 2019 and the team exceeds expectations. What if they finish 9-7? And/or make the playoffs?
NOBODY is trading for Eli

Also, no one is signing him next off-season even if they go 7-9.

For all the talk from Eli of retiring a Giant - if Eli has a decent upcoming year and Giants don't want to pay him -
Eli will definitely entertain offers from other teams.. just like his brother .

with Manning family loyalty is a one way street

Extend him while also looking for his replacement. I know it is blasphemy to suggest such a practical solution afterall we will have close to $100M in cap space. But the talking heads on NFL Network/ESPN have no qualms about Big Ben or Rivers getting extended. But when it comes to Eli, he is trash. Despite Rivers never winning anything and Big Ben looking downright awful through some games dropping 5 picks in the Jags hands like a pedophile handing out candy. Watch how awesome he'll be with Brown gone.
