ZogZerg : 3/21/2019 2:15 pm
The Giants will be meeting with him.

One NFL scout in Morgantown, W.V., just texted that QB Will Grier “put on a show” for NFL Teams in attendance and predicted he’s “a riser.” The WVU QB is expected to meet with at least 10 teams before the draft, including the Giants, Redskins, Chargers, Pats and Saints.

Don't discount this guy, even at 6.

I don't think he makes it that high. Lock's arm is at another level compared to Grier.

i don't think there's a shot of us taking him at 6. I think the Giants could definitely be interested, but likely in day 2. I'd also be interested in him day 2.
Pro Days, Senior Bowls and Combine are all of limited value.
Ira : 3/21/2019 2:24 pm : link
The main thing is what did he do during his college season. Will Grier's numbers were as good as Haskins'.
I doubt he will be picked at 6,
mattyblue : 3/21/2019 2:26 pm : link
but I have felt for awhile that someone would take him in the first somewhere. Just a guess though.

I loved Grier earlier in the season. He was hot very early. And I was suggesting he could break into the top 15. But I started to cool as the season wore on. Plus, I didn't think Grier showed well at the Senior Bowl.

So getting up inside the top ten is a super-stretch.

Giants sent the higher level guy to see Grier.

Of prodays. No team is going to drastically alter a QB’s rating due to their performance throwing to uncovered WR’s in shorts.

I am not a big fan of Grier as he turns 24 before the draft but I wouldn’t be opposed to using a 3rd on him but he will likely be gone. I do think it’s more likely that Grier has more success in the NFL than Daniel Jones. Grier doesn’t have a big upside though and I would compare him to Derek Carr.

The only QB’s I that like are projected to go early are Murray, Haskins, and Lock. I would only take Lock if Shurmur is confident that Lock’s flaws could be corrected. If not then I would focus on 3rd day guys like Stidham,Tyree Jackson, Gardner Mineshaw.

Mayfield was never projected as low as Grier is at this point. By mid March most mocks had him as a top 15 pick, although it wasn't until a couple of days before the draft until the talk of him going 1st overall started.

Can Grier rise up to the mid first round? Possibly, but I don't think there is anyway he goes from being considered a 2nd round pick this late in the process all the way up to the sixth pick in the draft.
Mahomes flew up too
Joey in VA : 3/21/2019 2:34 pm : link
He was one of those maybe 1st round guys, got hot and went 10th. It's all about the arms and the heads, and if Grier can show off a gun and some smarts he'll vault into the first.

Mahomes's tape was insane. Some of his throws and completions were really genius. You really can't teach it, nor would you.

Grier doesn't have that.
Not surprised
Giantophile : 3/21/2019 2:36 pm : link
IMO he'll be a better pro than Lock and Jones and maybe better than Haskins.

That's probably true and I think at least some of the guys in the Giants contingent were at OSU's pro-day simply because they have loads of talent. Don't we usually have several guys down in Bama?

I think it was Shurmur who basically said one of the most useful things about the pro day is talking to the teammates/coaches/support staff about a player. They're probably a lot more candid in person and can give valuable insight into the players work ethic, leadership abilities, and general intangibles.

That plus the board session were likely the important aspects for Haskins.

Trash. Y’all do realize he played in the same system as Geno Smith which is designed to make him look better than he is, hell Geno impressed too, even more so then Grier in that offense. I’m good on him, he’s not a leader, has average arm talent, I wouldn’t bother to look his way until atleast the fourth rd.

I think late first early second is his sweet spot. He shows up in the big moments and has excellent ball placement. Yes the arm doesn't wow, but as we saw at the combine it was plenty in it. He's not a guy who wows you when you size him up, but he's a baller. Being a baller in college does not necessarily mean he'll translate. We'll see.
He has been the only QB I had any interest in this year

Have been underrated by us fans. I still think Daniel Jones will be a good pro and can be great in the right situation. It wouldn't be the flashiest of picks but if the Giants feel he can be a winner, I'm on board.
Grier sucks
Rjanyg : 3/21/2019 4:45 pm : link
Impressive pro day. He sucked big time at both the senior bowl and combine. 4th round pick at best.
Grier doesn't suck - I watched him many times rip up Big 12 defense
PatersonPlank : 3/21/2019 4:49 pm : link
Now I understand they were not the best D's, but he was unbelievable against Texas who did beat Georgia and ended up in the top 10. The guy put 42 pts on the board including a pinpoint 30 yd pass for a TD as time expired, and then he ran in the 2 pt conversion to win.

The QB velocity stuff just doesn't seem to jibe with what we see on the field.

It certainly doesn't measure arm strength - because I don't think anyone could argue with a straight face that Will Grier has a stronger arm than Drew Lock does.

QB velocity seems to be one of those data points that is showing itself as useless. Especially because they aren't lining the guys up and saying throw as hard as you can. More and more it seems like weaker armed guys are adding a little mustard at the combine to say hey look my arm isn't weak.
Grier will be 24 before the 2019 season starts...

and if he sits behind Eli for a year, he'll be 25 before he finally takes over, that's assuming 2019 is Eli's last year. Haskin's is 2 years younger. Even Josh Rosen is 2 years younger than Grier.

Love how he can place the ball down the field. Arm strength question is absolutely answered by the throw against UT in below video from PFF. His feet aren’t on the ground and the ball is on the absolute money from 30 yards away. Time after time, down the field, the medium throws are on target. In the below video, you do not make the last pass to the TE with a weak arm. He’ll fit in the Shurmur offense like a glove. Can run enough to keep defenses honest. Saw him with Gruden a month ago. Kid just has a quiet confidence that I think will endear him to teammates.

While I have no opinion on Grier or the other QBs, I don't see why his age would be a factor. QBs aren't running backs. Good ones routinely play into their mid-thirties and beyond. If they stay healthy - and the rules certainly protect them - they tend to improve through their twenties. That was certainly the case with Eli Manning.

Besides, quarterbacks offer optimal cap value on their rookie contracts. It might actually be a plus to have that bargain contract cover ages 24-28 rather than, say, 21-25: greater physical and emotional maturity, possibly more effective leadership. Josh Rosen still gets grief for a stupid baseball cap he wore when he was 19. Grier was 20 when the NCAA busted him for PEDs at Florida. With time, he seems to have put that issue behind him, along with his kid brother's Internet fame.
