They're looking for veteran talent who can make an impact for a season or two, then move on. Houston fits that bill. The contract isn't outrageous, and then it's gone along with the all the dead money hits. Golden Tate on the other hand doesn't compute, not for eight figures per.
I agree with most of your posts Jon but I would go with Tate here. Healthier player, one of the best run blocking WR’s you can find (perfect for a run first offense), and a good locker room presence. He just gets it done.
Golden Tate just seems like one of those guys that defies age. Â
A week later and I'm still confused how Tate fits in the plan.
He's functionally Sterling Shepard -- but many years older and wildly more expensive.
When the Giants inevitably let Shepard walk next year, I'll be interested why he's disposable and Tate is worth 20M+.
It's like Gettleman got sick of how great he was doing this offseason and had to miss on one.
Because you can get out of the deal with Tate in basically a year (hes a stopgap signing) whereas you’ll be stuck overpaying for Shepard for multiple years.

Are stop gap deals worth 23M in guaranteed money? Do you really believe eating 15.4M in dead cap “getting out of it?”
With that logic any deal can gotten out of if the dead money doesn’t matter.
Its because if you think Tate's deal is big wait till you see what SS Â
signings like Solder, Stewart, and Tate are nonsensical. The are examples of what not to do when a team needs to restructure and also put into question whether the GM displays consistently good judgment.
We need a wr more than we need a pass rusher. At 6 and 17 and a 2nd rounder plenty of quality edge rushers available at a fraction of the cost. Also, if we do get a young qb you need a vet wr. Golden Tate is as professional a player as you can find
If they are planning on drafting an edge guy M. Golden is a better stop gap. Knows the system and has performed well in it.
Golden tate, and the rest of the Offensive moves, are about building an offense that is friendly to a young qb. Golden Tate is probably the perfect guy for a young QB.
It is a little difficult to see the consistency in where the Giants choose to go young and inexpensive and where they choose to go expensive vet.
If the plan is that Tate is great for a young QB, why not get and play a young QB? According to jt and others it will be Eli this year, even if they draft a QB early. If they don't get a QB, and the plan is to play Eli and next, how effective is a 33 year old Tate when this new QB steps on the field the first time?
Not saying there is not a plan as many do, but it is certainly not clear to me what the direction is. In some respects it seems it is a rebuild, and in some respects a reload. I'm not sure this "winning while rebuilding" isn't just a euphemism for "half measures."

What is the perfection Tate brings that Shepard doesn't?

They may want younger, faster LBers. Houston may not have been interested in coming here. We could have wanted him but only at X price.
I wouldn’t think much about it, too many variables/possibilities. For him, going to the Colts means playoffs now on a young D with a top QB on the other side.
Nick Perry, maybe
DG’s plan going up in smoke.

haha
Damn wanted him... What sucks is next year a contract like this won't be an issue.
Ditto
I don't think he wanted to play here really, and I heard reports he was taking his time with his decision. He probably wanted to play for a contender.
No... Doesn't mean I didn't want him.
