Last year UVA had an injury excuse. I agree they will come back.... but if they don't .... holy shit

is making the same mistake he made against UMBC. He's not playing Salt. GW has no size. Guy and Jerome are also cold from the outside.

Wondering if it would have been better to be a 16 seed versus Virginia as opposed to 15 seed versus Tennessee
Salt

and Huff should be playing. You use your size against teams like GW.

Agree but i do think the NCAA should reevaluate its pod model. It's not fair a 4 seed essentially plays a road game against a 13, and its fairly routine considering the 4 seeds get the worst venues since they get the final 4 slots.
UVA

finally getting the ball inside. That's the smart play. They are dominating the rim, and getting offensive rebounds.
I can finally exhale
PaulBlakeTSU : 3/22/2019 5:06 pm : link
Not playing Salt wasn't the issue.

The issue in the first half was that Diakite was showing hard on the hedge (as we typically do) and they were just slipping the hedge with ease and getting easy baskets at the rim. At the same time, we had six straight turnovers on offense. I no doubt think we were playing with nerves and playing tight after what happened last year.

When Huff came in, Tony had him stop hedging and to sag on the screener and it tightened up our paint and made it very hard for G-W to get any offense.

Then you see some shots go in on offense, and the tide turned.

In the second half, Diakite stopped hedging, too. And then our defense was impenetrable in the second half our our size on offense and guard play to dissect the zone made for easy baskets

Excellent analysis, but I still think Salt would have helped. The hedging was definitely a problem. They need to shoot better to win on Sunday. Teams are clearly running at Guy, and forcing everyone else to shoot from three point range.
the issue with Salt
PaulBlakeTSU : 3/22/2019 5:26 pm : link
is that G-W just packed it in (except for Guy) and sagged off Salt and when they sag off Salt and Clark at the same time, it makes it hard to get the offense into a rhythm.
Salt doesn't initiate offense. He's a great screener and can grab offensive rebounds, but G-W boxed out well so what really succeeds are agile, bouncy players (like Diakite and Key). Salt scores around the rim when the D is spread out too much and he can get an easy look. But his offensive skills aren't good enough to go to play after play.

Salt will start next game and will be useful in certain situations.
I mostly concur with Paul
Greg from LI : 3/22/2019 5:53 pm : link
GW plays no one bigger than 6'6" or 6'7". This was a bad game for Salt for that reason. He's not quick enough to guard those guys.

I also hate, HATE, the lineups with both Clark and Salt. We essentially are playing 3 on 5 on the offensive end with them. The numbers bear it out - those lineups struggle mightily to score. I love Tony Bennett but I don't know how he doesn't see this.

Dre finally started playing aggressively in the second half. We need much more of that.

Huge game by Diakite after a bad start. His defense in the second was superb and he was attacking the rim. Loved it, want more of it.

Bottom line - they clearly were mentally screwed up early and playing scared. Once they got that out of their system, they outscored GW 57-28. I hope they got the demons out of their heads going forward because this team is really damned good and has no excuse to not make a long run.
You
AcidTest : 3/22/2019 5:59 pm : link
play Salt because they shut down Guy, and no one else shot well from beyond the arc in the first half. Salt has also had a few really good offensive games at the end of the season, including a career high IIRC. With poor outside shooting, Virginia needed to exploit its size advantage. He would also have been another enforcer around the rim.
Diakite can guard smaller, quicker guys
Greg from LI : 3/22/2019 6:05 pm : link
Salt really can't.

Agreed, but GW was hitting a lot of outside shots in the first half. Since Virginia wasn't, you counter that by going inside on the offensive end. Salt's size advantage would have also helped on the boards.
Clark was a factor.early in the second half...
Dunedin81 : 3/22/2019 6:26 pm : link
Not offensively but he had a couple big steals. Bad half of play with turnovers and cold shooting followed by a dominant second half. Cardiac Kids but I'll take it.

You had two Midwest teams playing road games against west coast teams in San Jose. Easy call in hindsight.

Plus teams that were based on slow tempos and had difficulty scoring. Wisconsin got a ton of beneficial calls in the Big 10, Happ alone got 4-5 per game.

One rule..
FatMan in Charlotte : 3/22/2019 10:17 pm : link
I've never understood is the alternate possession rule.

If you have a tie-up and keep the ball, why does the shot clock not reset? It should be treated like a new possession since that's what the arrow is intended to do. The opposition doesn't get the ball with a lower amount on the shot clock.
Maye 2-9
MetsAreBack : 3/22/2019 10:20 pm : link
Cam 2-7
White 2-5

and most of these misses were wide open looks or missed bunnies.

Little probably the best player at 4-7 but he committed some egregious easy look misses and bad fouls too.

PUTRID. CBS put the metric about Roy's 28-0 first round record and the team shit the bed (and Iona hit about 7 consecutive threes... but in fairness most were wide the fuck open looks) from that point...

As a VCU alum, I'm not surprised. This team ran on coaching and effort all season. Two of the last three draft classes pissed away due to Smart and Wade leaving.

VCU needs talent. They've always had defense and heart. Marcus Evans is playing on a hyperextended knee, and we have nothing for Tacko.

We are literally 0 for the game in 3's. Just no shooting talent at all.

How we got 25 wins as and a BPI rating in the mid 30's is just incredible.

Rhodes has gotten the most out of these kids. I hope he can recruit.

My take on this fwiw is the tie up happens while the O team has possession. If the O gets the ball they continue that same possession as if there was no tie up, so no reset. If it's the D, it's a change of possession so they reset. Also works for stuck on the rim type jumps as the clock would reset for either team on rebounding the ball after it hits the rim

Never thought about it but IMO makes sense
