What do. You think about this QB idea?

kcgiants : 3/22/2019 1:18 pm
If I am wrong about Trevor Lawrence draft eligibility I’ll delete this post.

Trevor Lawrence is eligible for the NFL draft in 2021 if he decides to leave early.
Let’s say the Giants draft or trade for a QB with the 17th pick, with their 2nd or 3rd pick or a combination of in this year’s draft for Haskins, Lock, Jones, Grier, Josh or whomever. Gettlemen knows by picking a QB it will quiet the fans and media and make everyone happy with the Giants picking a decent QB. As he and the fans know, Eli will be the Giants qb this year and the QB the Giants drafted/traded for will sit behind Eli in 2019. Come 2020, Gettlemen retires Eli and start the new QB which everyone wants. Now let’s say in 2020, the Giants starts off 1-7 like they did last year 2018. Would you want the Giants to tank it so they can get Trevor Lawrence even if we don’t know for sure if he will be coming out early? And would that be a good plan to get Trevor Lawrence and tank on purpose knowing we are basically starting a rookie QB and will suck and no one will think otherwise.
I know 2021 is a long way off and I dont know if Trevor will be still be good then but damn he is so good now and we will probably suck this year (not playoffbound) and the first year of the rookie QB if going 1-7 so whats one more year of sucking?
Duck...

Almost unthinkable. I think, when the Giants draft their next QB, it will be because they are sold on him being the franchise QB, I honestly don't think it goes beyond that, the rest of the thinking I am pretty sure is on the roster improvement around the QB, I think that is enough for an organization. The other bullshit is just people and talking heads trying to make a name for themselves by selling their ideas.
Idiotic.

There's no tanking. Not happening, not going to happen.

However, it is a rare thing indeed for a QB to have great success starting his first season in the NFL, whether he be a rookie or a sophomore player.

It is entirely plausible that the Giants take Haskins this year, he sits his rookie year, and struggles in his first season starting in 2020. Should that be the case, the Giants may find themselves with a high draft pick again in 2020. And by the way, I'm not just talking about Haskins. The Giants could forgo QB altogether and take a rookie QB next year, and he could struggle mightily.

Patrick Mahomes is the exception, not the rule.

Therefore, should the Giants be in position in 2021 to draft Trevor Lawrence, and he has an Andrew Luck-like grade as a QB prospect, regardless of who the Giants drafted, they should draft Trevor Lawrence. You do not pass on a QB prospect that has the highest grade in many years.

Now, it is unlikely the Giants will find themselves in that position. But if they do, whoever the previous QB they drafted and is on the roster right now is not going to matter, nor should it. Similarly, it doesn't much matter to the Cardinals that they drafted Josh Rosen with their first round pick last year, if they feel that Kyler Murray is exceptionally better than Rosen, then they will draft him, as is expected.

But it doesn't matter if the Giants actually get Trevor Lawrence, although that would be fantastic. They can have a lot of success with the QB they do get in the next two drafts as long as they don't get a bad QB. You do want a top 5 or 6 NFL QB to give you a consistent chance at playoff success. Ben Roethlisberger is not considered by anyone to be the best QB in the NFL, but the Steelers do consistently make the playoffs with him, and have one titles with him. That's the goal, to get the guy who is going to give you a consistent shot at a championship.

At this point in time Trevor is the only sure fire Franchise QB I have seen so far.

After next season maybe not my opinion may change anything is possible (injuries poor play off the field issues whatever). However if he continues to play like he did last year growing in confidence and maturity as his body of work continues to mount I would say today what ever year he comes out Yes "sell the farm" and get this kid.

If that happens, Gettlemen won't have a job

to draft Lawrence. He'll be fired along with everyone below him in the coaching ranks.

So don't assume DG will opt for that course.
