Just speculating here, but something DG said post the Beckham trade doesn’t leave my mind:
He said “We traded Becham for AT LEAST 3 players”. Granted, that can mean he would later trade one of the pieces we got back from the Browns for 2 pieces down the line. But here is a thought:
Considering the Tate signing, this being the last year of Shep’s contract, the lesson learned from not getting anything in return for Landon Collins, and our need for a future QB, what if DG is planning to use Shep in a trade to acquire our future QB? Some options could be:
- Trade Shep+our number 37 pick in exchange for Rosen and the Cardinals 4th round pick. Shep can help Murray as a safe and capable option in the slot, we obviously can use Tate in that role. The Cards’ 4th is the first pick in the round. We would then have no.95 and no.96. Not bad. We can then use those to trade back into the second round if we want to.
The Cards get: Shepard+no.37 to pair with their no.1 and no.33.
The Giants get to keep no.6 and 17, get their future QB and no.95 and no.96.
- Trade Shep+no.17 for a top 5 pick. That’s a stretch, so perhaps DG then adds no.95 to get a deal over the line. Thought there is to be in position to get Haskins (if the Giants are sold. For the record - I’m not).
- Trade Shep+no.95 for a bottom half of the second round. You then have 4 picks in the first 2 rounds.
Obviously a willing partner needs to be found to pull off the latter two. If he pulls off the first option, I’d be very pleased.
My point is, I think the signs are pointing to a trade on SS. Thoughts?
1– The Giants have 12 picks this year. They could trade him for a pick but how many rookies can they keep? If it’s a true rebuild, a lot, but then it doesn’t make sense to start Eli. So they may we’ll be looking at acquiring 2020 picks too.
2– The Giants have a bunch of late pick that are statistically unlikely to turn into valuable players. Ahmad Bradshaws are rare. Even David Diehls are rare. More picks improve the odds but it’s still longshots and projects on Day 3. Earlier picks improve the odds more than additional late picks. So I think the Giants will probably want to flip some of those picks to move up, even a little. I could see Shepard and late picks for an early pick. Or Just late picks for earlier 2019 or 2020 picks.
Peppers, 17th pick and late 3rd round pick.
Not sure what this has to do with Shep.
Without a new contract Shepard has little trade value.
In 2018, about a week after signing him to a one-year contract, the Dolphins traded Jarvis Landry to the Browns for fourth and seventh round picks in the 2018 draft. The Giants wouldn't get nearly as much for Shepard.
Tate was signed to be the best of the "committee" that will attempt to fill the "X" role that OBJ filled all by himself.
The receiver "pickins" are slim in this year's draft, so they'll have to limp-along through this coming season and hope that the 2020 is better.
Shep is a keeper at the slot, Tate and everybody else, for now are JAGS or throw-aways. The only guy with a high ceiling is Cory Coleman, who has yet to prove himself.

+1
If the Giants are really trying to win with Manning, leave him at least one of the receivers to whom he is used to throwing.
Bingo, right answer.
But one can dream, cannot one?

That is not true. If the new team wanted Shepard to keep, they would work out a new deal.
Remember, after the Beckham trade it was said his value was highest last year before the season and new contract.
But with Gettleman no scenerio should be ruled out, guy is a bit of maverick

I get what ShocktoBeck is getting at. Gettleman clearly did say at least 3 players. I took that as being 3 for now, maybe he will be looking to trade down, out of the 17th?
Also remember the asshat info we were giving regarding post OBJ trade info. (paraphrasing) 'others should rent, and not buy, hint, hint'
I know that many thought that was aimed at SS, so a contract year trade may be on the way.
OBJ was traded for ...
1. Jabril Peppers
2. Whoever we get with the #17 pick
3. Whoever we get with the #29 pick
4. Could be several things like freed up money for another player. They picked up several. Could be freed up money in 2020 to sign players as well.
Point is it's easily 3 players but I would guesstimate closer to 4 or 5 players. Possibly more.

That makes Tate a very expensive JAG....
As for Shepard, he has shown he is a slot receiver, not a wide out....and he has come up short too many times in critical situations over the years.......he is a good blocker in the running game....but when you say more about a guy's blocking than receiving, that says a lot....
I think it would be a mistake to overpay this guy on his next contract......if you can trade him, do it and get something for him.....
