in the mid rounds. If Barkley were to go down, and I like Wayne Gallman, but I think we need more depth at the position. I would love to grab Miles Sanders at the end of round three. If you remember our running game in 08' we had 3 VERY productive backs ; Jacobs/Ward/Bradshaw. We really need to be careful about putting all our eggs in one basket with Barkley.
...Paul Perkins and Robert Martin?
I may be ahead of myself but I really like Robert Martin and hope he takes a big leap this year.
In the event another team doesn't snatch him up on a $4M guaranteed contract first...
Meant back up to Saquon.
2. Look at the stats for the NFL's top RBs of 2018. The top nine RBs (Barkley included), ALL weigh AT LEAST 220 lbs.--closer to 225.
3. If the Giants are going to change their game plan to focus more on the ground game, they shouldn't be forced to use a scat back when they need a power back either for blocking in pass protection or picking up short yardage.
4. Barkley shows how good it is to have a RB who is a receiving threat on third down. Adding another good receiver would not hurt.
Although RB is not their biggest need, IMO it is an area that can easily be improved.
The only Giants draft choice I would use on drafting a running back would be to get Bryce Love of Stanford.
And I would only use our later 4th or an early 5th to make that pick.
Stanford used plays in which Christian McCaffrey and Love were on the field at the same time with great success.
I could imagine plays with Barkley and Love on the field at the same time.
...Paul Perkins and Robert Martin?
I was thinking same thing. I think Perkins and Martin will compete for back up duty this year. I think we’re ok at RB. It’d be a waste of resources, unless the value is too great to pass, but I think Giants will be looking at Defensive depth on day 3.
ALong with this strategy, I wouldn't mind picking up a fullback/big tailback type guy. I think Penny can do some of this but I would love to have the diversity to have a guy who can be Barkley's blocker at fullback, being able to flex him out in the slot or as the 2nd tight end but then have the versatility to provide a running threat as Barkley spreads out.
Gallman is a goood back though and Perkins if he can return to rookie form is good too.
Great special teamer too. He has an unorthodox style that I think would make him a great change of pace guy. He's kind of like a more explosive version of Gallman. Would love to grab him with 1 of our 5th rounders.
Exactly, I like Penny alot. In this draft I was only referring to Patrick, somebody mentioned bigger back in this draft. We have that already in Penny. Check xxxx
Agreed, we have to look out for a SB backup or two if we go balls out build a team around him. Don't think there is one back that remotely matches his skillset.
None of those 3 were close to as good as Barkley and I liked all 3 and none had significant investment.
You could even argue due to their specific skills they were all complementary backs. Worked well together, but none would likely thrive as a feature back multiple years.
I think the Giants could take a RB, but I'd look for a pure change of pace back like a Meggett or a specialist of some type like a short yardage back who could block well.
Gallman can spell Barkley.
Agreed but 1 condition:
If the Giants have a guy highly rated that somehow slipped, yes, use one of the many day 3 picks.
Since the Cowboys grabbed Zeke early, and the Giants grabbed Saquon early, I hope the league is starting to put more emphasis on RBs and teams now take them early and often leaving more stud linemen, DBs, etc., for the Giants to sweep up.
I imagine the Giants will have a few RBs in camp. Doubt they keep any. Would like to see Perkins finally put it all together and be our 3rd back
Yes, likely late....4th or later.
Dame Harris will be off the board before we can really look for RB depth I think.
