“People know ‘Devin isn’t going to be on the board long, and we’re not going to find another Devin 10 years from now. He’s rare,’” White said, via Roy Lang of the Shreveport Times. “Draft me, because when I hit free agency in five years, the price will go up. I’ll be looking for $100 million then.” White stood on his Combine numbers Friday, but he did do individual drills. “It just shows my competitive nature, my hard work,” White said. “I’m not trying to do what anybody else did. I’m trying to create a lane for myself. I want to go in the top five.” |
1) His free agency comments...no big deal to me, but the Giants seem to be trying to get away from the more “self centered” mentality
2) Used his pro day meeting to sign a Nike endorsement deal. Again, i don’t care at all. It’s smart business...but we are talking about the Giants and their model for a player.
3) He was arrested twice as a senior in high school leading him to get kicked out of the high-school all-star game.
“White was a controversial recruit out of high school, having multiple run-ins with police. In November 2015, he and his teammate Keuntra Gipson were arrested for having consensual sex with a 14-year-old, a misdemeanor in Louisiana.[1] One month later, White was arrested for misdemeanor charges of “careless operation of a motor vehicle and flight from an officer.”[2] Because of his legal situation, White was dismissed from the 2015 Under Armour All-America Game.[3] Despite these controversies, he was still able to sign with LSU to play football.[4]” (from Wikipedia).
None of these things may be deal breakers, but the Giants are trying to establish a certain culture. Right or wrong, i am not sure i see them drafting White at 6.
Another guy who probably wouldn’t sign his franchise tag.

Huh??? If this dude turns into a STUD & is in that position.... We could have worse problems...
Actually he's been playing for a professional team for 3 years. Just didn't get paid for it.
If anything this shows the player isn't simply satisfied with being drafted near the top of the draft but he wants to excel as a pro and get paid like one of the best.
Every single player drafted should have such goals and motivation.

In theory yes, but we thought the same about Beckham and look how that turned out. I think many including myself are a little gun shy of taking players making comments like this now. Possibly to an unreasonable extent.
It's just personality! A regular Michael Strahan!
They almost have to go ER/DL at least once if not potentially twice in the early rounds.

Then he’s going to have to play his ass off to get one. Nothing wrong with a motivated player.

Actually turned out fine - the team sucked for every reason but him- he brought the only good season in 8 years because of his play- we lost a year of him because of a high 10 yard pass over the middle where he got hurt
And he’s a big enough talent that in his departure he brought big assets back in a first round safety and first round pick
White does have character flags. Wanting to get paid for his job is probably pretty far down the list.
In light of some of the info on this thread, I have little doubt White's self evaluation is 100% spot on. Just maybe, not in the way he thinks.
Those interviews are about more than just the chalkboard, I imagine. Especially after Reese and Ross's run of failed draft selections.

There’s a big difference between thinking of your next pay day and talking about it to anyone that will listen. It’s just not professional. I’m sure Barkley envisions a huge payday in a few years, but I don’t see him talking about it on public, only about the team and winning.
Agreed. And Jtgiants said we do like him but not at 6. Need some more ability to create havoc on the pass game to warrant an LB pick that high
It's just a damned good case of the Mexicali Blues.
Agree. Glad he got that off his chest pre rather than post draft.
