Dave Gettleman's Draft Record in Carolina: Any clues here?

Big Blue Blogger : 3/23/2019 12:09 pm
I've seen other posters cite DG's history as GM to support various theories about his blueprint for the Giants. Maybe I'm just a lousy tea-leaf reader, but I don't see much of a pattern. Does he prioritize certain positions? Offense over defense? Pass rush over coverage? Production over potential? Does he excel at finding certain types of diamond in the rough? Struggle with evaluation of certain attributes?

All opinions are welcome. I really have no clue.

2017
1 008 Christian McCaffrey RB Stanford
2 040 Curtis Samuel WR Ohio State
2 064 Taylor Moton G Western Michigan
3 077 Daeshon Hall DE Texas A& M
5 152 Corn Elder DB Miami (FL)
6 192 Alex Armah RB West Georgia
7 233 Harrison Butker K Georgia Tech
2016
1 030 Vernon Butler DT Louisiana Tech
2 062 James Bradberry DB Samford
3 077 Daryl Worley DB West Virginia
5 141 Zack Sanchez DB Oklahoma
7 252 Beau Sandland TE Montana State
2015
1 025 Shaq Thompson LB Washington
2 041 Devin Funchess WR Michigan
4 102 Daryl Williams G Oklahoma
5 169 David Mayo LB Texas State
5 174 Cameron Artis-Payne RB Auburn
2014
1 028 Kelvin Benjamin WR Florida State
2 060 Kony Ealy DE Missouri
3 092 Trai Turner G Louisiana State
4 128 Tre Boston DB North Carolina
5 148 Bene Benwikere DB San Jose State
6 204 Tyler Gaffney RB Stanford
2013
1 014 Star Lotulelei DT Utah
2 044 Kawann Short DT Purdue
4 108 Edmund Kugbila G Valdosta State
5 148 A.J. Klein LB Iowa State
6 182 Kenjon Barner RB Oregon

By the way, note the absence of Luke Kuechly and Cam Newton, two franchise-altering picks inherited by Gettleman when he took over in Carolina.
We will draft a RB at the back of the draft?

He likes to draft DT?
Look at his early drafts at CAR

And what he is doing here and there is a pattern. There's an emphasis on the lines early on as he reallocates premium resources to fit that strategy. He's done the same here. Later on, after he's laid a foundation it's probably more in line with the same BPA/need approach employed by most front offices.
I see no offensive tackles anywhere but several guards in rounds 2-4

I see a RB (McC) and a WR (Benjamin) mistake in Round 1 but heavy defense early. No other skill players?

Is that the pattern, because this year we should expect heavy defense, a OT and maybe a QB early?

Looking back, did he leave a good legacy in Carolina?

Moton and Williams played RT, pretty well at that. I wouldn't focus on their designation on the line, they're OL. We can draft OT Dalton Risner only to have him be our starting center in a couple of years.
He likes big receivers

He definetly

Prefers BIG people.
This is not an impressive drafting record

To say the least
He seems to have a good grasp

On the type of interior lineman that can succeed at the next level. Daryl Williams (4th round, 2nd team all pro), Trai Turner (3rd round, 4x Pro Bowler), and Taylor Moton has been pretty good.

Are helluva lot better than Reese's.

Kelvin Benjamin was good until his injury + laziness and blaming Cam.
Carolina isn't the Giants
JohnB : 3/23/2019 12:41 pm : link
He is starting over. A whole new ballgame.

Question.... Why didn't you include the Giants 2018 draft class? That I would think that has more bearing on what he will do in 2019 that his other drafts.
Lots of high 1st round picks on defense (six)
TMS : 3/23/2019 12:50 pm : link
taken over that period. Looking at that pattern and thinking thats how we go in this draft which has defense as its strength. Wonder if we even take a QB this year at all. DG has almost fixed the OL in FA already. Defense is next, we can do a lot there in this draft. Hope that is the case. Next year we are in good cap shape to go after a QB.

Three reasons:
1) Too soon to assess outcome, except for Barkley and maybe Hernandez/Hill;
2) Tiny sample;
3) Laziness on my part.
He's not afraid to cluster draft

at a position of need.
This needs context
WillVAB : 3/23/2019 1:20 pm : link
He didnt take over a team in Carolina rotten to the core. They needed some work in the trenches but not a total rebuild. You can see based on his record there that when he felt good about the trenches he focused more on the skill players.

Theres still work to be done here on the OL and definitely with the front 7 on D. Expect that to be the focus of the draft.

I was thinking something similar. I think he has a good eye for offensive line talent. He also signed Andrew Norwell as an undrafted rookie free agent.
I think he drafts a corner early
larryflower37 : 3/23/2019 2:26 pm : link
Maybe even 17
The 2 top CB could still be there

Seriously? Well, now I have to take points off. Sorry, but that's the rule.
Barkley
djm : 3/23/2019 2:47 pm : link
Hernandez
Hill
Carter
McIntosh

Thats all I care about. Thats all anyone here should care about.

Spin that draft anyway you want, its still a very very good haul.
Hes willing to target

A position of need with multiple picks

👍👍🏿
And it could become
Dave on the UWS : 3/23/2019 3:33 pm : link
a GREAT draft if Carter and McIntosh develop. If this years draft is just as good (regardless of the positions taken)!oir talent pool will be greatly improved.
It stood out to me that....
Torrag : 3/23/2019 3:41 pm : link
He made 17 picks through 4 Rounds in his 5 drafts with Carolina. 9 of them were in the trenches, either O-Line/D-line. That's over 50% of his 'premium' picks.
Good at drafting linemen, awful at drafting WR
Vanzetti : 3/24/2019 1:43 am : link
The exact opposite of Reese
That 2016 draft is brutal
Vanzetti : 3/24/2019 1:51 am : link
As bad as as Reese at his worst. The rest of the drafts are good.
Big men early with a possibility of an early WR mixed in

Also look for a trade up atsome point using the extra mid-late round picks as ammo.
