NFT: Network extenders

bigblue5611_2 : 3/25/2019 9:09 am
Anyone have any good suggestions/recommendations on one? My router is on the first floor on one end of the house and I recently had to have a home work set up in a room on the opposite end of the house on the second floor and the connection being intermittent in that room.

I know I could get a guaranteed working option from FiOS for $99 that would plug into the coaxial, but if there was a better/cheaper option that would work I would be all for that. I’ve seen some on Amazon that can just plug into an electrical outlet but wasn’t quite sure how well those would work.
You sound like a perfect candidate for a mesh network

I'd highly recommend Google Wifi.

The initial pricetag has a little bit of sting in it, but it's worth every penny, in my opinion.

Incredibly easy to set up and administer.

Or similar mesh network is your best bet. I have Google and it's great and easy to setup.

Also I think what you are actually looking for is a "repeater" - something that will repeat your WiFi signal. An "extender" extends your WiFi and creates an additional network different than your original. Some devices can function as both - personally I never had much luck and that's why I got the mesh network.
yes go with a mesh network

much better than extenders and reasonable. I switched to the google and love it. Comes in 3 or 4 pack depend on where you get it.
My router is on the main floor in my house,

and wifi is spotty upstairs in the bedrooms. I bought a Netgear AC1200 extender, and it works fine, but you have to switch networks to realize its benefits. I would look into mesh extenders that allow you to remain on one network. Netgear offers mesh extenders, as do Google, Eero and others.
Thank you for the suggestions

I have heard about the google WiFi before, but was never quite sure of the differences between those and network extenders.

Just get Google WiFi and you won't look back. Each "puck" is about $100 but you can buy a 3 pack for $220 or so. You still need a cable modem, but if you have a current modem/router you can just disable the router functionality on it
Another vote for mesh wifi

I made the switch a few months back and it’s great. I went with the TP-Link Deco system. On Amazon now it’s $160. Not Google but same concept and it works great.

Previously I had two WiFi extenders and they were less than optimal. Each time you join a different extender it’s a different network name, the speed slows down, etc. To me extenders are now an outdated technology and the mesh network is the way to go. Easy setup as well.
A question on the Google WiFi

Right now I have my Apple TV, PS4 and Phillips Hue Hub hardwired in to my router/modem. Do I lose the ability to keep these hardwired if utilizing the Google system?

Each of the Google Wifi pucks has an ethernet port that you can hard wire devices into. If you want to wire more than one device into the same port, you'll probably just need to buy a multi-port switch.

I don't think you'd want them hardwired directly into the modem, because then they won't be part of the network you are monitoring and controlling via GoogleWifi.

Good to know, thank you.

I am really liking what I am hearing and seeing on the google WiFi, I am really thinking about that, the downside right now is the pricing. Just switched jobs recently, taking a lower pay to do so, so financials are a little tight at the moment. There is the $99 option with FiOS I mentioned in the OP, so the question for me now is do I bite the bullet and spend the extra money now knowing I would like the mesh network at some point or get the FiOS option for now and put the google option out a bit for when finances are in better shape.

I also went for Google wifi a few months back and its been working well.

I was using a fios router w wifi and my problem was streaming services like netflix were spotty and a few other rooms were getting one bar of the wifi connectivity on iPhones. I first looked into purchasing a third party router that had a stronger wifi signal than the fios router but decided against it bc I wasn't sure if that would solve my problem and those routers aren't cheap. I wasn't sure how many of the Google WiFi points I needed so I bought only one and connected it directly to the fios router (its required that one of them be setup this way). I was surprised that this one google wifi point solved all the problems. The added benefit is knowing that I can add google wifi points in the future if the need arises.

If you decide on Google WiFi go ahead and purchase the bundle that includes the 3 WiFi points. Google discounts as you move up in the bundled packages. Plus I noticed sales (around the holidays) that brought the 3 WiFi price point for the bundled packages down.
Google wifi is effing great.

+1 for all the recommendations for me
I have a google Wifi system and am having a problem.

I bought the three pack and my son got it up and running. About 3 months later I decided to buy one more puck. Plugged it into a wall outlet and now I can’t get three of them to work. Only one that works is the one wired to the Fios Router. App will not locate the “point” as it describes it. So I am basically back to using my Verizon router which sucks. Is there a professional service I can have come to my home and get it to work the way it should. I am at a loss and my son can’t figure it out either. HELP?
Did you try ditching the extra puck?
Heisenberg : 3/25/2019 6:12 pm : link
as far as the professional service, there's chains of "nerds to go" around here that would probably come by. But they'll probably just follow the prompts of the google wifi app, too.

Something to try if you haven’t already:
