“We are not going to get into, we like this player at number six (in the first round of the NFL Draft) and these two at number 17,” Mara said. “Yes, we are definitely going to address the quarterback in this draft. The plan is to build a team and make it better. I don’t know why that is such an issue with you guys or with fans. That is the plan.”
Would we love to have a QB coming out of this draft, yes, but only if we have a conviction about it. We are not there yet. Until they bring these guys in, put them on the board, put the final grades up, we are a long way away from that.” |
“Yes, we are definitely going to address the quarterback in this draft."
But he also says: "Would we love to have a QB coming out of this draft, yes, but only if we have a conviction about it."
How are these statements not contradictory? I guess it all depends on what they mean by "address." I assume it means that they will study all the QBs, and draft one if they have a conviction about that player.
I get that football owners are billionaires who are not accustomed to being questioned, but this attitude where he gets riled up at questioning when this team has been a dumpster fire for six years is pathetic whining.

He's definitely sounded defensive in all his comments the past few days.

This quote sounds like a BBI poster defending the faith...
Face it, Giants fans, the Mara family are big time involved in the football side of things. They may be a big part of the decline of this team. If they are, it's going to be a long ride.
That said, it was clumsy in his wording. Just say 'we're looking at QBs, and all the positions' and move on.

Because people want the blueprints to the PLAN! If they don't know exactly what Mara/DG is doing there is no plan, apparently. Just sounds like a guy who's sick of the same old questions. He'd be better off not speaking publicly, but he is and he can be annoyed if he wants to be.
Between Mara's comments and jtgiant's "fustrated" post from a week ago, there's a real vibe of "why won't you ungrateful jerks get on board with what we're doing" coming from the organization. I would definitely feel more comfortable is they stopped trying to appease/assuage every fan reaction and just did their jobs the best they could to build a winner.
Then the Yankees won a whole bunch of World Series', and lo and behold I didn't hate him at all, in fact I grew to love the guy.
So I'm just not going to get bent out of shape over John Mara.
Basically everyone wants him to definitively say which QB is is taking and when. he is saying he is not going to do that.
Then the Yankees won a whole bunch of World Series', and lo and behold I didn't hate him at all, in fact I grew to love the guy.
So I'm just not going to get bent out of shape over John Mara.
Yeah, and the Steinbrenner example accurately describes the life cycle of a lot of fans (myself included), which is why Mara and the rest of the org shouldn't act flummoxed that people are discontent about everything right now. Just shut out the noise and do your best to build a winner.
Just hope it isn't Jones at 17. Truthfully Haskins to me is the safest bet and is going to be a very good NFL QB. Lock has tremendous upside if he can get more consistent but he probably doesnt make 17.
I would hope they consider Rosen if they dont feel they can get Haskins.

100% agree!
This is the first article that had a quote that said "definitely" that I have seen
You should know better. Shhh.
I get that football owners are billionaires who are not accustomed to being questioned, but this attitude where he gets riled up at questioning when this team has been a dumpster fire for six years is pathetic whining.
Exactly

And I'm not sure he and DG are on the same page right now.
I wonder if that is what Mara was referring to, but he tried to be too cute by half in his answer.

Fair enough, but are the fans and media not also arrogant to think they know better than professionals?
Then the Yankees won a whole bunch of World Series', and lo and behold I didn't hate him at all, in fact I grew to love the guy.

so all we need is for Mara to be suspended by the commissioner and go away for a couple of years?
This 2x he can't just not say anything he can't help but put
himself front and center and say it's up to the GM coaches scouts ect .
