Mara: Giants are going definitely to address QB in draft

GFAN52 : 3/25/2019 9:51 am
Quote:
“We are not going to get into, we like this player at number six (in the first round of the NFL Draft) and these two at number 17,” Mara said. “Yes, we are definitely going to address the quarterback in this draft. The plan is to build a team and make it better. I don’t know why that is such an issue with you guys or with fans. That is the plan.”

Would we love to have a QB coming out of this draft, yes, but only if we have a conviction about it. We are not there yet. Until they bring these guys in, put them on the board, put the final grades up, we are a long way away from that.”

Address just means evaluate the QB’s
Oscar : 3/25/2019 9:54 am : link
Not necessarily drafting anyone, certainly not saying they will spend a first rounder on a QB. Of course it would be unnecessary and pointless to say that, it’s obvious they are trying to find someone this year. But I wouldn’t take this statement as a guarantee they are drafting Haskins or Jones or whatever.

AcidTest : 3/25/2019 9:58 am : link
he says:

“Yes, we are definitely going to address the quarterback in this draft."

But he also says: "Would we love to have a QB coming out of this draft, yes, but only if we have a conviction about it."

How are these statements not contradictory? I guess it all depends on what they mean by "address." I assume it means that they will study all the QBs, and draft one if they have a conviction about that player.
I think this is the more accurate quote of their thinking
Peter from NH (formerly CT) : 3/25/2019 9:59 am : link
"I would like to come out of this draft with a quarterback. Here is the thing. Show me what the grades are and what the value is. If the top QB’s are graded toward the bottom of the first round or in the second round, I am not going to insist that we take one at number six or number 17. Show me what the value is. That has always been our philosophy on that."

He's definitely sounded defensive in all his comments the past few days.

He keep inserting himself into the process? Own the team, make your statements and let actual football people do this. He seems to be meddling far far too much lately. He hired a GM and a coach now let them work.

Quit getting involved with the process. You undermine the GM when you say "we are going to definitely address QB." Your only answer should be "our GM has a plan for the roster and a plan to win."

Wait, maybe it's all an elaborate smokescreen...

Face it, Giants fans, the Mara family are big time involved in the football side of things. They may be a big part of the decline of this team. If they are, it's going to be a long ride.

That said, it was clumsy in his wording. Just say 'we're looking at QBs, and all the positions' and move on.
This a nothingburger.

I’m among the first to criticize Maras (except Kate and Rooney), and even I don’t see much cause for complaint here.

Because people want the blueprints to the PLAN! If they don't know exactly what Mara/DG is doing there is no plan, apparently. Just sounds like a guy who's sick of the same old questions. He'd be better off not speaking publicly, but he is and he can be annoyed if he wants to be.
I read that
montanagiant : 3/25/2019 10:36 am : link
And it says if they like a QB they will grab him, not that they are "definitely" going to.
Stop caring what the fans think
Lambuth_Special : 3/25/2019 10:41 am : link
The fans don't run the team. The media doesn't run the team. They will complain no matter what you do. Winning will stop the complaining. Just execute your plan.

Between Mara's comments and jtgiant's "fustrated" post from a week ago, there's a real vibe of "why won't you ungrateful jerks get on board with what we're doing" coming from the organization. I would definitely feel more comfortable is they stopped trying to appease/assuage every fan reaction and just did their jobs the best they could to build a winner.
Once upon a time I hated George Steinbrenner.
Klaatu : 3/25/2019 10:41 am : link
I even referred to him as "Stein-Hitler" on a call into WFAN, that's how much I hated the man.

Then the Yankees won a whole bunch of World Series', and lo and behold I didn't hate him at all, in fact I grew to love the guy.

So I'm just not going to get bent out of shape over John Mara.
the way I interpreted that
ron mexico : 3/25/2019 10:42 am : link

Basically everyone wants him to definitively say which QB is is taking and when. he is saying he is not going to do that.

Yeah, and the Steinbrenner example accurately describes the life cycle of a lot of fans (myself included), which is why Mara and the rest of the org shouldn't act flummoxed that people are discontent about everything right now. Just shut out the noise and do your best to build a winner.

They have 12 picks, and Lauletta had a bad 2018.

They should draft a QB prospect, even if it's a developmental QB and not Eli's designated successor.

Pan-handler : 3/25/2019 10:47 am : link
Pick 6 and 17. You dont do that unless you are seriously considering that spot for QB. I see him basically saying very strong possibility we are pulling the trigger at either spot. We just have to finalize the grades (solidify them).

Just hope it isn't Jones at 17. Truthfully Haskins to me is the safest bet and is going to be a very good NFL QB. Lock has tremendous upside if he can get more consistent but he probably doesnt make 17.

I would hope they consider Rosen if they dont feel they can get Haskins.
He should just not talk to the media

I've spoken with John
Nomad Crow on the Madison : 3/25/2019 11:15 am : link
and he has appointed me "Unofficial GM" of the New York Football Giants. In that capacity, I will say that I am much more interested in using a third round pick to choose Ryan Finley or Clayton Thorson. For Thorson we may be able to wait for the fourth round. I am not interested in a first round QB.

I'd do it.
There is very little information here
UberAlias : 3/25/2019 11:17 am : link
But I will say a few things about the value comments. If he means by value that they aren't going to reach and take a QB they don't like just to take a QB, I get it. On the other hand, you are rarely going to get a franchise grade QB "at value" because the demand will drive them up on people's draft boards. Waiting on value to match draft position is the formula they've been following for years and has only lead to a series of wasted draft picks on marginally talented QBs in rounds 3+. Time to get real about securing the future and change the formula.
Are we sure that's the quote?
GiantsRage2007 : 3/25/2019 11:21 am : link
I thought I saw him say they'd "like" to address qb in this draft but only if the value was there...
