Mid-round draft gems

Old Dirty : 3/25/2019 12:29 pm
with the Giants having 12 picks in this year's draft, they will have plenty of opportunities to improve the roster. We all have a pretty good idea who owe'd like them to select in the first 2 or 3 rounds. Who are some decent mid-round players that you'd like to see the Giants draft?

I like Ryquell Armstead, RB, Temple and think he could make this team as a 4th or 5th rounder. I am aware RB isn't on the list of Giants' needs, but watching him run really reminds me of Ahmad Bradshaw. It's funny because some articles have mentioned how he seems to "run angry" which is exactly how AB was described. He would be a nice addition to Saquon & Gallman

we should definitely take a RB

somewhere in the 4th or 5th. we're thin at the position after barkely god forbid something happens to him.
My list
mavric : 3/25/2019 12:55 pm : link
Ross Pierschbacher, center, Alabama
Jalen Hurd, WR, Baylor
Terronne Prescod, OG, North Carolina State
Jesper Horsted, WR, Princeton

I would be ecstatic to get any of these guys on day 3
When I started looking at video of RB's,
TC : 3/25/2019 12:56 pm : link
he stood out for me too. And his similarity of style to Bradshaw also appeared obvious.

It's hard to guess where RB's will get taken in the draft, as teams often seem to have very different views of the same guy. Armstead could hang around until the 4th or 5th or even later, but I could also see him going early in the 3rd. He had a really good final year at Temple with over 1,000 yards and a 5.2 average. And he tested very well at the Combine.

I was initially interested in him as I'm still looking for a short yardage RB specialist, and while not a huge guy, he's good at it. But he's good at tough yardage in general, and can also pick up yardage in chunks. Still, he may be a luxury the Giants can't afford to add to their roster given Barkley and Gallman being solid, with some promise behind them.

I'd be surprised if he's not on the Eagle's radar.

For CB's -- Isiaah Johnson and Jimmy Moreland.

For safety -- Sheldrick Redwine

For WR --- DaMarkus Lodge

For NT -- Daylon Mack

For ILB -- Joe Giles Harris

Jay on the Island : 3/25/2019 1:14 pm : link
OT Trey Pipkins Sioux Falls
G Alex Bars Notre Dame
G/RT Max Scharping Northern Illinois
OT Tytus Howard Alabama St
OT/G Oli Udoh

Pipkins is raw but he stood out during the east west shrine practices which was impressive considering the big jump in competition. He would be an ideal developmental OT behind Solder. Scharping could provide depth at RT and G but eventually take over at RG in a couple of seasons.

2 from Miami - Jaquan Johnson and Travis Homer
Eric on Li : 3/25/2019 1:18 pm : link
Johnson was a day 1 starter as a nickel and has been enormously productive as a both a deep FS and against the run. PFF rated him as the 50th best player in CFB this past year (including non-draft eligible players). He made big plays in big games forcing 5 fumbles and 6 INTs the past 2 years while also posting over 90 tackles each year. If he'd had a good combine I would have guessed he's a 2nd or 3rd rounder, now I'd guess more of a 4th or 5th rounder but he's going to be a contributor right away for someone.

Homer is a highly athletic downhill RB who runs tough despite appearing as more of a sprinter. He's also a great special teamer, capable in pass pro, and a good receiver out of the backfield. He's similar to Gallman in style, but a lot more explosive. Instead of being a 4.6 guy he's a 4.4 guy. Gallman's vert was 29 inches, Homers was 39. I'd guess he ends up a 4th/5th rounder as well.

You are a dope. Barkley and Gallman may be the best 1/2 RB tandem in the league.
after taking a good look
Old Dirty : 3/25/2019 2:31 pm : link
there could be some decent safeties available in this area.

S. Redwine, Miami could be in play in the 4th (#108 or #132)

E. Worthington, Colorado; W. Harris, Boston College; K. Willis, Mich St all should be worth a look if still available after the 4th round
Mixed Bag and 1 later rounder

Mid Round
LB, Khalil Hodge, Buffalo
OT, Trey Pipkins, Sioux Falls
ST-Edge, Sutton Smith, Northern Illinois University
DL-Edge, John Cominsky, Charleston

Late Round Sleeper
WR, Ashton Dulin, Malone University
Ben Powers in the 4th. OG that might be able to play C too.

Maybe get the sort of 6'3" it 6'4" 315-320lb guards to convert to center.

Like 3 of them to try to leverage the outcome and as depth guards.

4th round? Free safeties. Pile of 'em.

You shouldn't need to use a 4th or 5th rd pick on a 3rd string RB. That's UDFA territory.

Bill, you're forgetting that there may be media/fan backlash if they don't take a RB in the middle rounds. That's why DG would do it, since we know Platos feels that's what informs DG's decisions.
I wouldn't mind a Sproles-type RB
Bill L : 3/25/2019 4:07 pm : link
but I doubt he would see the field much, even on third downs.
One of "my" guys
Marty866b : 3/25/2019 4:11 pm : link
Porter Gustin,lb, or de,USC. He's had a bunch of injuries and played less then 10 games the last two years but when he did play, he had ten sacks in less then ten games. He's about 6-5,260 pounds and ran less then 4.7 at the combine. He's a workout warrior who goes 110% every second on the field and he would be a good locker room guy. He will drop way down because of injuries and if he's there in the 5th round, or later, he's worth a shot.

Amen to that. First off, if Barkley goes down his skill set is simply irreplaceable, even if we burned our first round pick on a RB. Secondly, Gallman will become our lead back over anyone we get after the first couple of rounds. Backup RBs are "plug and play" type and they are everywhere and available. They can do the job behind a good line, but are not game changers.

Lastly, we need a lot of good defensive players battling it out so that the cream comes to the top. Dittos with WRs and O-linemen. Finding a gem or two in a CB, S, DT, LB, OG, OT, etc., is far more important than finding a perceived gem of a RB who will rarely, if ever, see the field except on the sidelines.
I think someone like Damien Harris in the 3rd will be a bargain

Damien Harris in the 3rd WOULD be a bargain, as many sites show him as going in the 2nd. And he is likely going to be a starting RB, and that would be somewhat redundant behind Barkley. We've already got one better than average RB who can't get enough touches in Gallman.

Agreed, TC. I don't see us taking a RB that high.

There is zero reason for a Sproles type when Barkley is already the best pass catching RB in the league. He should be out there every down unless you are giving him a rest. You certainly don't draft that type of player when you have a Barkley. Maybe you look through some UDFAs or people on other team's practice squads.
Mine.. let me know if you guys like/dislike any of these players...
Leg of Theismann : 3/25/2019 4:46 pm : link
LB Germaine Pratt

LB Gary Johnson

DL Isaiah Buggs (Alabama, overshadowed by Q. Will)

DE Joe Jackson

IOL Mike Jordan

OC Ross Pierschbacher

OT Tytus Howard

WR DeMarkus Lodge

WR Miles Boykin (absolutely killed it at the combine, don't know why no one is talking about that. His shuttle and cone drills were actually top notch compared to DK Metcalf who sucked in those measurements)

OT Mitch Hyatt

WR David Sills

WR Mecole Hardman (from Georgia, one of the most explosive players in the draft, will be a much better pro than college player I believe)

CB Kendall Sheffield

S Mike Edwards

DE Jordan Brailford

DL Chris Slayton (from Syracuse, perfect DL for 3-4)

RB Benny Snell (battering ram who can take the pressure of Saquon on short yardage runs)

S Malik Gant (I think he can be had very late in the draft)
Almost forgot...
Leg of Theismann : 3/25/2019 4:48 pm : link
RB Justice Hill. That dude can fly. Extremely twitched up. I think he's close to the "Sproles-type" we could use another poster mentioned earlier.
If we are going Running Back
GoDeep13 : 3/25/2019 5:33 pm : link
I’d rather us target a Power Back. Someone that can pound the defense when Barkley is out and also be a short yardage back.

L.J. Scott
Bennie Snell Jr
Elijah Holyfield
Or David Montgomery

Would be my guys.

Gallman is only under contract for two more years and he only rushed for 3.5 ypc last year.

They could use one of their 8 day 3 picks on a RB...

And Martin. Both are legit back ups w borderline starter ability. Not worried about back up RB. you can pick up a vet back up relatively cheap.

I think the idea was to list some middle round players you like. Not all of them. Not all of the players in college.
A few more
Jay on the Island : 3/25/2019 9:19 pm : link
OLB Sutton Smith, Northern Illinois, is very intriguing for the Giants. He is very small at 6'0 233lbs but he did put up 15 sacks last season. He is worth a gamble on day three as a situational pass rusher.

ILB Germaine Pratt from NC State could be a great replacement for Ogletree. Pratt is a former safety who is still learning the position but he is great in coverage. He is exactly what this teams needs. Pratt would be a great choice in round 3 if he is still on the board.

If GMen take a RB belief RD 6 wiht all the other holes
giantstock : 3/25/2019 9:26 pm : link
It would just highlight how bad DG is. How many holes do the Giants have plus how are their quality backups for those positions that have holes? And as a result there would be a players in which we have MORE OF A NEED higher on the board or just slightly below the RB?

After the first two or three rounds, the draft is about acquiring talent. You don't fill needs with 5th round draft picks. If DG takes a running back in the middle rounds I'm fine with it. Just make sure he's good.
a couple already mentioned, but I'm liking at a couple positions:
SirYesSir : 3/25/2019 10:08 pm : link
WR Andy Isabella
WR Mecole Hardman
WR Hunter Renfro (late)
Edge Jonathan Ledbetter
Edge Porter Gustin
Edge Jalen Jelks
Some sites think Baylor WR/RB Jalen Hurd may go 4th or 5th.
TC : 3/25/2019 10:36 pm : link
I wouldn't mind the Giants using one of their 4th round picks on him. He's an odd duck; great red zone target at 6'5" with hands and body control, and weirdly for anyone that tall, an equally good short yardage RB.

Dontavius Russell, DT Auburn.
BlueLou'sBack : 3/25/2019 10:39 pm : link
Backup or rotational NT type, 4 year starter at Auburn with natural power at the POA.

Any of those Oklahoma or Wisconsin OL who don't go in rounds 1 -3. Evans, Samia, Powers, Benzschawel, Dieter, Edwards...
Hoping some of these well coached hog mollies make it into the 4th for the Giants. Particularly Dieter, a LT who's now projected as an OG, just a nasty widebody guy who knows how to use his hands.

Before going to Baylor . . . .

Isabella may very well go in the top 50 picks, especially after the combine validated his on-field productivity - I don't know if he qualifies in the context of this discussion simply because he will probably be drafted before the middle rounds.
