Should friends desire, contributions may be sent to The Comedy Cures Foundation, a national non-profit whose mission it is to entertain, educate and unify grown-ups and kids living with illness, their families, and medical caregivers (comedycures.org), or to Kidznotes, a local Durham/Raleigh organization with a vision to be a catalyst for change that uses music to build a thriving network of children, families and partners in which the passion for music unleashes the human potential to transform lives and communities (kidznotes.org).
Once again, thank you all for all the love and support you showed my father in life, and my family in his passing.
Years back, maybe in the 2005/06 time frame, I was asked by a friend to teach a 2-day "writing in the workplace" course at Binghamton University. I'm not a teacher at all, but the $ offer was one I couldn't refuse, so I reached out to a few people (teachers/writers) for advice.
While a couple of them were helpful "in bulleted form," John was happy to get on the phone several times and talk some things through. He sent through email outlines he created for me as a helpful guide, and he offered online links to help fill two 6-hour sessions of various types of writing.
I knew I was in a bit over my head, and when John realized I was essentially scared shitless, he ramped up his efforts to support and encourage me. That's the thing I will remember most.
People so often offer cliches, catch phrases and empty platitudes when someone passes. But John Boni really was a great man who I admired very much. It's hard to process the reality that he's gone.
