Pat Shurmur speaks on Odell, Future QB and the team....

sxdxca : 3/26/2019 2:52 pm
"I'm on board. I really believe we have a plan and a way to make our team better and we felt this trade could help us do that."

"I think we're answering our questions and trying to fill our needs."

On Eli Manning

"At some point there will be a new QB playing for the Giants."

"If there is gonna be another QB playing for the Giants at some point, sooner better than later."

"There are numerous good layers in this draft... We've done a heck of a lot of work on all the QBs we could potentially draft... We'll see in the final analysis how it stacks up."

PS on the question he asks himself when meeting with QBs: "Do I want to coach this guy?"

PS on if Haskins moves well enough: "Sure. Absolutely."

PS on Murray size: "Probably not that big an issue."

Asked Pat Shurmur if this season goes the way the #Giants want, will Eli start every game? “If we’re winning games, we’re not disrupting anything,” he says.

Pat Shurmur on the idea that Odel Beckham was too much to handle: “That seems to be the narrative. That’s not the case. The notion that we were tired of Odell, that’s not right.”

“Obviously Odell is an outstanding player. But it’s business. I really believe we got good value.”

Shurmur says he reached out to Odell Beckham after the trade. Doesn’t sound like he has heard back yet. But he is sure they will talk soon. #giants

Shurmur: There are many things I admire about Odell. We traded Odell and got value. I wish him the best.

On Odell Beckham

PS: "We have a lot of fine players on offense so we'll just spread the ball."

PS on offense without Odell: "We'll find a way."

PS: "We need to get somebody who can affect the QB."

PS on Tate: "His skillset is a lot like Sterling." Both gritty blockers in run game, both can play in slot. "That's good,. You can play both guys wherever."

Shurmur says “absolutely” he is looking at Jabrill Peppers as a kick and punt returner.

PS on changes for him in Year 2: "I have a really clear picture of our team and s strong appreciation of our guys."

But every time I've read something like this the past few weeks I have to take a step back and remember that we actually traded Odell.

Crazy.
Like he is really going to publicaly say

Odell was an issue..

I personally already see a culture shift since Beckham was traded

It just feels like its about the Giants again. There aren't any constant Beckham stories about what Instagram model he is playing tiddlywinks with, or what party he went to that could effect the team wins.

And on the flipside, his brand has already taken a dive for those exact same reasons. He should have learned to be a better professional if he wanted to stick in the biggest market in sports.

Saw that too.

Eli knows this is probably his last year with NYG - but surprised a bit that PS would put it that exact way.

Or an extension is in the works, notice the IF in that statement

It makes sense. Eli is going to very likely not be a Giant after this season. So, which is better? Getting his replacement now, where you can coach him up for a year, or get him next year, so you have a rookie at QB that you haven't had a lot of time with?

Obviously, the preference would be to get the franchise guy now. However, I think for the Giants then you have to have a guy that makes sense at the pick. If the grade isn't there, then I think the Giants are going to pass.

That may mean the Giants get a QB later in the draft, perhaps they trade up to a spot where it makes more sense, or trade down for that matter.

But nothing trumps the fact that if you screw this up and take the wrong guy, it will destine the franchise to mediocrity or worse for a long time.

"If there is gonna be another QB playing for the Giants at some point, sooner better than later."

Possible Translation: OK Eli is in the last year of contract and we are ready to find his successor this draft. As opposed to last year it is DEFINITELY a priority this year.

"There are numerous good layers in this draft... We've done a heck of a lot of work on all the QBs we could potentially draft... We'll see in the final analysis how it stacks up."

Possible Translation: We may not go Qb at 6 if the value doesn't line up but could go at 17 or 37 (or a trade up perhaps back into the 1st rd w/37)

PS on the question he asks himself when meeting with QBs: "Do I want to coach this guy?"

Possible Translation: Old-school speak, maybe Rosen is not high in the top scenarios.
Others

PS: "We need to get somebody who can affect the QB."

Possible translation: Edge Rush is priority #1 or right there with QB. Expect ER/QB in some order at 6 and 17. OT is likely 37 (in a deep OT class similar to us going OL successfully in rd 2 last year)

PS on Tate: "His skillset is a lot like Sterling." Both gritty blockers in run game, both can play in slot. "That's good,. You can play both guys wherever."

Possible translation: Redundant? Could he be trade bait as was rumored? We have seen a huge purge by DG on pretty much anyone from the previous regime not named Eli.
The "sooner rather than later" comment..

is being misprinted so as to lead the reader to take it out of context. Read somewhere earlier where he basically was saying that we do need to acquire a young QB and it would be best to get the kid on board earlier as to be able to learn from Eli, etc...

As in draft the QB this year rather than 2020 is how I interpret it.
It feels like...
BleedingBlue2 : 3/26/2019 5:34 pm : link
the Giants plan and the way they are going about this is to get back to running the football. Maybe it is about the QB position or maybe it is about fundamental philosophy.

PS on Tate: "His skillset is a lot like Sterling." Both gritty blockers in run game, both can play in slot. "That's good,. You can play both guys wherever."

Drafting Barkley, Beginning to fix the line last year with Solder/Hernandez, adding Zeitler, I am going to assume more draft picks in this draft. Feels like we are going all in on Barkley, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Yes, I know someone is going to talk about stacked boxes, but Tate & Shepard have proven to be more than capable at the WR position (More-so Tate).
Come on draft!
Mdgiantsfan : 3/26/2019 5:40 pm : link
I can’t wait til the draft gets here. My hopes are that we’ll either draft a successor, trade for Josh, or extend Eli. If neither happens, good grief my Big Blue anxiety will be at an all time low😀
I’m betting that QB statement is
Dave on the UWS : 3/26/2019 5:45 pm : link
Transcribed wrong. I would bet he said (or meant to say) “get one in here sooner than later (so they can sit behind Eli). I would be shocked if they don’t draft one this year.
Lauletta
AnskyJK : 3/26/2019 8:02 pm : link
Has nobody asked Pat or Dave about Lauletta? They thought highly enough of Lauletta to take in 4th round/ not super high but decent value pick. If they think he’s got nothing and not gonna compete what about that evaluation should change in this years qb evaluation?
I agree...
Brown_Hornet : 3/26/2019 9:05 pm : link
... That the sooner rather than later comment is poorly transcribed.

That said the comment that stuck out to me was, “If we’re winning games, we’re not disrupting anything,”

This is likely the 1st time any giants coach has ever acknowledged that there is a scenario where Eli could be benched
"We got good value".......
