NFT: Help opening a OneNote pkg file...

Dan in the Springs : 3/26/2019 5:14 pm
I'm generally a Google Apps user and don't use Microsoft much anymore. I'm now trying to access a .onepkg file that was shared with me. I've tried the following on my Windows 10 laptop:

1. Downloaded the file to my desktop.
2. Double-click it - get a prompt to find an app to open it with. System couldn't find OneNote or OneDrive.
3. Downloaded OneNote as well as OneDrive and reinstalled both.
4. Opening OneNote and OneDrive on my machine. I get a message (preparing OneNote for first use) which after 30 seconds or so goes away.
5. Placing the folder with the OneNote package inside my OneDrive folder.
6. Sign in to Microsoft Office online.
7. Open my OneDrive folder - verify that the folder and all contents (including the .onepkg file) have been uploaded properly.
8. Clicking on the .onepkg file - automatically begins ANOTHER download of the file.
9. Opened OneNote online succesfully - could not find any way to access the .onepkg file located in my OneDrive.
10. Created a OneNote folder in OneNote successfully and tried to add the file to it - didn't work, didn't even recognize the file when I looked for it.

I'm at a loss - have been working on this for a couple of hours now and my contempt for all things office-related is growing by the minute.

Anyone here know what I'm supposed to do to open this thing? I understand it is a package of files which can be edited, etc., but somehow cannot get it open - Google has not been helpful so far either.

HELP???
Are you using Windows 10 OneNote or OneNote 2016?

I am not 100% sure, but I seem to recall that OneNote 2016 files are not comparable with the Windows 10 version.
*compatible

just wanted to thank you for trying to follow up on this for me and give an update. Microsoft Tech spent an absurd amount of time with me getting OneNote 2016 installed on my laptop again. Unfortunately the free version cannot open the pkg file because it can't create a new folder anyway according to the MS rep.

After all this had to open it on a workstation at work, then was able to access it on my laptop. PITA, but it's a reminder to me of how much more difficult MS products can sometimes be compared to what I've been using. Thanks again for trying to help!
