Given what’s gone on with Tatum this year and his decline, if knicks get #1 or #2 pick, can the Knicks build a package without including that pick for Davis and still have the best offer?
For instance can anyone beat an offer of Knox, Dennis Smith JR, the 2 Dallas picks and the Knicks 2020 pick?
Obviously this would assume no Kyrie, so you build around Durant and Davis. Still have Robinson, trier, Morant or Zion, Frankie and still have some cap space to add other pieces.
Trade Frank
Resign Jordan
Hopefully we get Durant
Don’t want Kyrie
And maybe a real long shot I’d love Klay
Jordan/ Robinson
Durant
Knox
Klay
Morant
Bench
Trier
Dotson
Smith
I'm not in love with that but would get it. Still if it's Zion I wouldn't move him, and the others it depends on the pkg even still - and I'd rather no trade if it does gut the team. And Earl's post w/ Morant true Klay seems unlikely but I would love that, replace Klay w/ Middleton sure, there's a few different but similar outcomes but gotta love most of those results (Durant, Kyrie, Barrett for ex?)
Then they could also still trade for AD and go over the cap using the 120% rule (i.e send back 21.5 mill in salary back and take on his 27 mill salary).
However that would require trading away all 4million + contracts on the team (that would include our 2019 FRP because that salary will be 6.5 mill or more).
Now if only KD comes and you bring AD as the 2nd guy we have alot more flexibility financially . You could keep the 2019 FRP but I dont know if DSJ, Knox, Frank and 3 future FRPs will entice them enough without including Mitchell. We may need to include Mitch to get the deal done. BUT if we give them a top 3 pick THIS year it eill drastically reduce the other assets we'd need to give up.
I don't want Kylie
Knicks need some player development before doing very much.....kwai is the inky major name i kije
If we get a top 2 it is likely we would not have to ALSO include Mitch.
If we give them Zion or Morant those are blue chip players. And they project better than any player that another team would likely include including Tatum.
Unfortunately the Knicks will almost certainly not be able to offer Zion.
If knicks get 1st or 2nd pick I would keep Morant or Zion. Sign Durant. Keep the cap space, picks and young talent. Maybe sign deandre and reddick on 1 year deals and eventually use the combination of picks and young players to land another stud at some point via trade. If lillard became available at some point you can make a big offer for him.
Celts...Tatum has come back to earth hardcore this season.
If Knicks get #1 pick, they'll definitely be in the running for AD.
Also it would be a major risk unless the Knicks were 100% certain through back channel conversations that KD was coming as a free agent. Plus someone else. Without that guarantee I would rather just keep Zion.
And if the rumors are true and they can get Durant and Kyrie, then they should build around the core of Durant/Kyrie/Zion (or Morant), Robinson, Knox, Trier, Smith (interchangeable at the 1 and 2 with Morant), and Dotson. And if you can keep Jordan even better.
In this scenario, they still have a bushel of future picks and would have a potential superstar in Zion or Morant under cost control for five years. And they’d have a great mixture of vets, youth and picks.
Of course, as a long time Knick fan, I know they will end up with the fifth pick.
And I would definitely do the package you mentioned with the future 1sts. Sign me up for a front line of Davis/ Zion and Durant...
Durant and Davis on the same team is an immediate contender.
I'm not sold on Zion. At all. I don't think he's going to be as good as people think. AD? Well, you know what he is.
Knicks can sign irving and durant..
then trade draft pick(after signed and 30 days) frank and knox plus either jenkins or ellenson for cap filler...
Knicks just have to get to 21 million
Totally agree and it’s probably been Perry’s biggest mistake. I also hate have 6.5 million in dead money for the next 3 seasons. Once the team gets good, every dollar matters under the cap.
Yes an argument can be made to need even bother for AD if (and only if it's Zion)
However, if its top 2 (likely meaning Morant) and Kyrie is coming with KD , you could argue you would be better off with AD. You already have your monster big awesome defender without a jump shot in Mitch.

I could go either way on this one but AD is so darn good and he has a developed jump shot already. If you want to win starting next year getting AD may be the best way to go no matter what.
Agreed. Almost a coin flip to pick 5th with the worst record.
It was created to dissuade tanking but they took it too far I think.
This was the whole point of changing the rules... to limit teams from purposefully tanking..
Maybe have the lottery for only the top 2 picks? Can still discourage tanking but doesn’t hurt the worst teams too much. Picking 5th after being dead last is a steep drop in the nba draft.
