NFT: Knicks hypothetical Offseason

GMEN46 : 3/26/2019 5:48 pm
Given what’s gone on with Tatum this year and his decline, if knicks get #1 or #2 pick, can the Knicks build a package without including that pick for Davis and still have the best offer?

For instance can anyone beat an offer of Knox, Dennis Smith JR, the 2 Dallas picks and the Knicks 2020 pick?

Obviously this would assume no Kyrie, so you build around Durant and Davis. Still have Robinson, trier, Morant or Zion, Frankie and still have some cap space to add other pieces.
I’m on the Ja Morant bandwagon
Earl the goat : 3/26/2019 5:52 pm : link
I’d be a bit upset not getting Zion but I think Ja will be a great player

Trade Frank
Resign Jordan
Hopefully we get Durant
Don’t want Kyrie
And maybe a real long shot I’d love Klay

Jordan/ Robinson
Durant
Knox
Klay
Morant

Bench
Trier
Dotson
Smith
Maybe

but the expectation is it will take many if not all the assets you listed to get AD. We don't know for sure, but it would likely gut the team of 75-80% of the kids like DSJ, Trier, Mitch, Knox, The Pick...

I'm not in love with that but would get it. Still if it's Zion I wouldn't move him, and the others it depends on the pkg even still - and I'd rather no trade if it does gut the team. And Earl's post w/ Morant true Klay seems unlikely but I would love that, replace Klay w/ Middleton sure, there's a few different but similar outcomes but gotta love most of those results (Durant, Kyrie, Barrett for ex?)
Am I understanding you correctly? Do you want to give up
yatqb : 3/26/2019 6:02 pm : link
essentially 5 first rounders for Davis (counting Knox and Smith as 1st rounders)?

If Knicks were to get both KD AND Kyrie (as I think Durant want to play with his buddy. )

Then they could also still trade for AD and go over the cap using the 120% rule (i.e send back 21.5 mill in salary back and take on his 27 mill salary).

However that would require trading away all 4million + contracts on the team (that would include our 2019 FRP because that salary will be 6.5 mill or more).

Now if only KD comes and you bring AD as the 2nd guy we have alot more flexibility financially . You could keep the 2019 FRP but I dont know if DSJ, Knox, Frank and 3 future FRPs will entice them enough without including Mitchell. We may need to include Mitch to get the deal done. BUT if we give them a top 3 pick THIS year it eill drastically reduce the other assets we'd need to give up.
There is no way the Knicks are getting AD
Oscar : 3/26/2019 6:16 pm : link
Without first landing a top 3 pick and then trading that pick. It’s possible nobody on the current Knicks roster is worth a damn besides Mitchell Robinson (he would be traded too in this scenario). Tatum is still a much more appealing piece than anything the Knicks can offer really other than Zion. I would rather have a package built around Brandon Ingram than any non-Zion Knicks piece too.

If we get a top 2 it is likely we would not have to ALSO include Mitch.

If we give them Zion or Morant those are blue chip players. And they project better than any player that another team would likely include including Tatum.
Possibly. I think it would be close
Oscar : 3/26/2019 7:25 pm : link
The Celtics offer would be Tatum plus players or picks, to me that’s competitive with Zion. Morant for me would not be near the same level, I would rather have Tatum plus or Ingram plus than Morant I think.

Unfortunately the Knicks will almost certainly not be able to offer Zion.
New Orleans would hang up the phone on that offer
GFAN52 : 3/26/2019 7:26 pm : link
.
The Dallas picks
GMEN46 : 3/26/2019 8:30 pm : link
Are way more valuable then any of the Boston picks. I think a combo of Dennis Smith Jr. And Knox with three picks is better than anyone can offer unless Boston goes Tatum and brown. Knox has shown some flashes this year as has smith jr, both very young and locked up for a few years.

If knicks get 1st or 2nd pick I would keep Morant or Zion. Sign Durant. Keep the cap space, picks and young talent. Maybe sign deandre and reddick on 1 year deals and eventually use the combination of picks and young players to land another stud at some point via trade. If lillard became available at some point you can make a big offer for him.
Few things...
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/26/2019 8:31 pm : link
LAL offer is somewhat in limbo with Ingram's health status.

Celts...Tatum has come back to earth hardcore this season.

If Knicks get #1 pick, they'll definitely be in the running for AD.
I dont see ainge
nygiants16 : 3/26/2019 8:40 pm : link
Offering tatum, i think celtics deoending on how playoffs go building around the youth and resigning rozier rather than irving
What happens if the Knicks win the lottery?
Oscar : 3/26/2019 9:13 pm : link
Could they trade Zion and whatever else for AD immediately? In that scenario the Celtics couldn’t even make an offer until July 1 so the Knicks could say hey here’s your chance take it or leave it. I don’t know how that works though.

Also it would be a major risk unless the Knicks were 100% certain through back channel conversations that KD was coming as a free agent. Plus someone else. Without that guarantee I would rather just keep Zion.
I hope
PhilSimms15 : 3/26/2019 9:19 pm : link
If the Knicks get lucky for the first time since 1986 and get the first or second pick, that they hold and not trade it.

And if the rumors are true and they can get Durant and Kyrie, then they should build around the core of Durant/Kyrie/Zion (or Morant), Robinson, Knox, Trier, Smith (interchangeable at the 1 and 2 with Morant), and Dotson. And if you can keep Jordan even better.

In this scenario, they still have a bushel of future picks and would have a potential superstar in Zion or Morant under cost control for five years. And they’d have a great mixture of vets, youth and picks.

Of course, as a long time Knick fan, I know they will end up with the fifth pick.

I wouldn’t trade Zion/ 1st pick for Davis. Unsure about Morant/ Davis but would probably do it. 3rd or later and I would definitely do it.

And I would definitely do the package you mentioned with the future 1sts. Sign me up for a front line of Davis/ Zion and Durant...

Durant and Davis on the same team is an immediate contender.
If the Knicks know
SFGFNCGiantsFan : 3/26/2019 9:32 pm : link
KD & Kyrie are coming...& they get the 1st overall pick, you trade it for AD.

I'm not sold on Zion. At all. I don't think he's going to be as good as people think. AD? Well, you know what he is.
Noah buyout
GMEN46 : 3/26/2019 9:46 pm : link
Is looking worse everyday, knicks could really use that contract right now to move in a trade for more cap space, instead $6 mil plus if cap is being wasted. Could have used that in Anthony davis trade as expiring with the pick this year and Dennis Smith jr and keep the depth on roster while still going for 2 maxes.

Knicks can sign irving and durant..

then trade draft pick(after signed and 30 days) frank and knox plus either jenkins or ellenson for cap filler...

Knicks just have to get to 21 million
The only way I trade Zion is if Durant demands that as
shockeyisthebest8056 : 3/26/2019 10:30 pm : link
part of coming to NY. I would try to convince him otherwise, but ultimately it would have to be done. I think Zion would be a perfect fit next to KD and Kyrie. He's a great defender, unselfish, and can fill up a box score just by pure effort/hustle.

Totally agree and it’s probably been Perry’s biggest mistake. I also hate have 6.5 million in dead money for the next 3 seasons. Once the team gets good, every dollar matters under the cap.
All this stuff sounds highly realistic

Yes an argument can be made to need even bother for AD if (and only if it's Zion)

However, if its top 2 (likely meaning Morant) and Kyrie is coming with KD , you could argue you would be better off with AD. You already have your monster big awesome defender without a jump shot in Mitch.

I could go either way on this one but AD is so darn good and he has a developed jump shot already. If you want to win starting next year getting AD may be the best way to go no matter what.

TyreeHelmet : 3/27/2019 12:16 pm : link
By finishing last, they will have a 48% chance at landing 5th overall. These new percentages seem wrong to me. If your in dead last, you should have better odds at a top 3 pick.

Agreed. Almost a coin flip to pick 5th with the worst record.

It was created to dissuade tanking but they took it too far I think.

This was the whole point of changing the rules... to limit teams from purposefully tanking..
Lottery
TyreeHelmet : 3/27/2019 1:35 pm : link
I understand what and why they changed it. But the worst team in the league shouldn’t have close to a 50/50 shot at picking 5th.

Maybe have the lottery for only the top 2 picks? Can still discourage tanking but doesn’t hurt the worst teams too much. Picking 5th after being dead last is a steep drop in the nba draft.
fwiw...
