It goes without saying the 2019 draft is beyond pivotal for the Giants. 2 first rounders, 12 selections, and Gettleman cleared the decks from the Reese/Ross years and will use this draft, after last year's strong effort to re-stock the cupboard.
And when you look back at this video, you will know why he had to start from scratch. I've always been a big believer that you need to wait about 3-5 years to judge a draft and with the salary cap, maybe it really is only 3.
But what is interesting to watch here, see how the draft pundits rate the Giants picks and keep this in mind when the Giants pick this year, whether they heap praise or scorn and give out grades. From what we saw here in this package, they seemed to think the Giants knew what they were doing in 2015. How wrong they were.
A few pointers to watch for
1) Erick Flowers- ESPN talks him up as being nasty and mentioned that the Giants wanted Scherff actually (a Reese special to blab who he really wanted) and the Redskins got him. Gruden of course said nice things about him. In his time at ESPN, if Hitler suited up for an NFL team, Gruden would find some way to talk him up. The only naysayer was Mel Kiper, who said he was raw in pass protection and let guys get in on his body and that won't work in the pros (Mel was right)
2) Landon Collins- there was the trade up. Again, ESPN talked him up as an in the box safety. But they also spent time talking about how he wasn't good in coverage and would get lost with the ball in the air. Turns out they were right.
3) Owa Odighizuwa- Another Reese special. They took a shot on him as someone to bounce back from injuries. ESPN talked him up. Of course, there were mental health issues factored in that we didn't see coming.
5) Mykkele Thompson- ESPN talked about the Giants getting younger and building their team. To be fair to Reese, Thompson had shit luck and got hurt 2 straight pre-seasons and that sidetracked his career. What was amusing was he was introduced by Richburg and Kinnard. Both now gone too.
6) Geremy Davis- ESPN talked about that he was slow and can't get open and had great abs. They were right.
7) Bobby Hart- I don't know if the couple in the video is still married who announced the pick, but he was described at ESPN that he wouldn't be a tackle and was a road grating guard in the pros. Well, turns out he is a tackle, he can't run block, and got himself thrown off the team and landed in Cincy.
Anyway, enjoy or barf, but something to keep in mind as we watch the Giants pick this year. Don't get too caught up and listen to the cons more than the pros of a prospect, since in this case that seemed to be more accurate.

Why don't you just give me a nice paper cut and pour lemon juice on it?
One thing I’ll say is that Owa was a crowd favorite of BBI. I don’t remember a pick that was more widely celebrated on BBI in all of the drafts I’ve followed on here since 2005.
Giants of course...
The whole draft sucked except for Collins....but while he was good, he had his limitations.....and thus far, he has turned one season into a career...
It’s mind boggling how some here want instant gratification from DG after making excuses for 10 years of shitty drafts from the Reese era.

Double O was a "crowd favorite?" I don't recall that, precisely. What I do recall is that OO absolutely blew up the combine every which way, and KWALL touted him through the roof. I spent a fair amount of time looking at OO's game tape available on Youtube, and I disputed KWALL's extreme enthusiasm saying that I didn't see it on the tape. I respect KWALL, so it was a polite discussion between us about him, but I am sure I said I didn't see that athleticism and explosion demonstrated in the combine drills actually translating to the field at UCLA.
Yeah, the usual suspects got all jacked up about his combine #s - pretty sure I did too until I actually spent some time watching him play - but I don't recall him being really highly touted by anyone who watched enough UCLA tape. He had trouble disengaging from blockers IIRC.

Can’t believe the 2015 draft is already 4 years ago.

OO was also the player Sy said he'd pick for the Giants at that spot. Reese messed up the draft, but there were a lot of people who were high on his selections.
As for Collins, the guy had a fantastic year in 2016. Unfortunately, we never had a DC who used him correctly. If you pair him with a ball hawking FS, he will be a beast.
One of the great features of draft time has been the counterpoint of Sy's picks to Giants' FO, as a touchstone, hope we see it this year too.
Matt, thanks for the caution and the rationality!!
