Like I said in the final 10 thread, the teams were pretty much locked, but there was some jockeying for position and one team flip in the West (ARI out, COL in).
Some positioning changes, NYI had the M1 seed, now M2 and play PIT instead of CAR. Not sure I feel they did themselves any damage, PIT is obviously skilled but they are old team trending down, and CAR (a bunch of jerks) is young and full of energy.
Anything can happen in hockey, 1 seeds lose, 2 seeds lose, it happens. So my predictions are not something I'd wager on per se, but just my feeling about the series and how they'll go.
East match-ups:
A1: TBL vs WC2: CBJ 4/10 IMO this is not a cake walk for the Lightning. Yes, they're the best team in hockey and one of the best teams in a long time, but CBJ went all-in. Not just with their acquisitions, but by the players they kept knowing there was a very low chance of keeping them (Panarin and Bobrovsky to name a couple).
Prediction: TB wins, but closer than some people think
A2: BOS vs A3: TOR 4/11 my favorite series of the 1st round, and this is why IMO the NHL changed the playoff format. they want these matchups "guaranteed" and they want them early. I love Boston to win this matchup, TOR has been coasting for a while (and they shouldn't have been) I don't love the TOR D and I don't love Andersen in the playoffs. BOS has the best line in hockey (if they keep them together) with Bergeron centering Marchand and Pastrnak. Their 2nd line is like many teams 1st line with Krejci, deBrusk and probably Heinen. He could shuffle things up, but Bergeron, Marchand and Pastrnak tallied 30 pts in the 7 game series vs TOR last year. I wouldn't mess with it. Toronto's fowards might even be deeper - and Boston has David Backes in their 4th line - but man that D could be exposed.
Prediction: BOS, in 6 or 7 in a great series
M1: WAS vs WC1: CAR 4/11
I like that CAR made the playoffs a year early (they just had the #2 pick in the last draft), but WAS should handle them. In the end this will provide the canes some good experience for their young team.
Prediction: WAS in 5.
M2: NYI vs M3: PIT 4/10
In a matchup of the last two stanley cup winning coaches, I think the Islanders actually helped themselves playing PIT instead of CAR, CAR is a team that I don't think anyone likes to play - highest shot total in the league. But IMO PIT with their aging skill is still a bad matchup for NYI who rely on timely scoring, solid D and stingy goal-tending, PIT PP IMO makes the difference. If the Islanders can stay out of the box, they can win this series, but it's the playoffs, and the spotlight will be on the officiating and they'll call it tight, benefiting the Pens.
Prediction: PIT in 5 or 6
West match-ups:
P1: CAL vs WC2: COL 4/11
The Flames are one of the most unheralded 1 seed I can remember. I think it's because a) they're in mountain time and b) their goalie situation is tenuous. But they have such a solid team on O and D I hope they get a long run and people get to see players like Gaudreau, Giordano, Monahan, etc. tough team in all facets. I said above the bruins have the best line in hockey, but Colorado's top line of MacKinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog isn't far behind. If Rantanen can return from injury. However, the Flames should roll.
Prediction: CAL in 5
P2: SJS vs P3: LVG 4/10
LVG team this year is MUCH better IMO, but they don't play quite the same style. SJS is everyone's pick every year to win the cup, they have probably the best D in the playoffs.
So they're mine to win this series.
Prediction: SJS in 5/6
C1: NSH vs WC1: DAL 4/10
Dallas owner publicly ripped his team - mostly stars Tyler Seguin and Jamie Benn - Preds owner should have ripped his team. The Stars responded from mired in futility to make the playoffs, and they are my upset pick.
Prediction: Stars in 7
C2: WIN vs C3: STL 4/10
Love this series. Laine, Connor, Wheeler, Scheifele, Trouba, Ehlers, big Byfuglien - WIN has a star studded roster. The Blues are not bereft of talent either with Tarasenko, two-way prototype center Ryan O'Reilly (my favorite Oz character), Schenn, 19-year old Robert Thomas ans good D plus phenom goalie Jordan Binnington - yes he's a 25 year old rookie, but he's a rookie and he led the league in GAA.
Prediction, going with the HTA: Jets in 6.
Even though my team isn't in it, I'm looking forward to the playoffs. I hope the Bruins get knocked out early (doubt it), otherwise don't care who wins.
/sarcasm
a hot goalie certainly can help with an upset, but it requires more than that IMO.
The Islanders split the season series with the trash pens D and goalie, and now it's post-season where Murray has a stellar career 2.08 GAA even with last year's poor/mediocre showing.
I think the series comes down to specials like I said, and that's where I think the Pens separate.
Quote:
That vaunted pens defense and goaltending is trouble......NOT. No mention of that weak trash they trotting out there?

lol, it's just my opinion. you are of course free to disagree,
I appreciate your support here but as a Leads fan, I do not feel very confident today playing our nemesis, the Bruins. Pj said it alldefense plus Anderson = close your eyes.
Hey pj, sorry your boys didnt make it into the dance. What a finish though...Ryan Poehling might be that sniper your fans desperately desire.

Obviously I was disappointed and then 5 seconds later I was over it.
Poehling had a great debut, but he's not going to be a sniper. two of those goals were from the doorstep. He's more of a 2nd/3rd line C, and I think he'll be a good one, can score, play physical, defensively responsible, but I don't think he'll be in the race for any scoring titles.
Looking forward to the future with youth like Poehling, Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, and many more, I just wish Carey Price was 5 years younger.
It's a labor of love. lol. The West teams are hard, but the East teams not too bad. I have the NHL Center Ice package so I watch hockey every single night. While I avoided it for a long time, I was coerced into a fantasy hockey league with some of my men's league teammates. And it's helped me learn about players I normally wouldn't have otherwise. I watch all the juniors tournaments to see the younger kids come up and see what I can about the draft eligible and recently drafted players, I've even watched some KHL games
and some of it is what I read/watch/listen to from real experts.
I'm in a hockey house (wife and kids are all hockey fans), and my youngest is now very interested in it too and she (yes she) is rabid, in a good way, for anything hockey. She plays hockey on an elite club team that I coach, so it's nice to have something to bond over.
anyway, mostly what I post is purely my opinion unless I cite others, I'm not a scout, not THAT experienced as a coach (5th year coaching - all youth hockey), and I peaked as a player in high school (if not earlier) and only played D3 college, but I find the game to be the best sport on the planet and I like talking hockey with my fellow Giants fans.

which makes what Trotz and co. have done for the Isles all the more remarkable...
ok, enuf re. home town stuff
re. coaching your daughter, it's wonderful experience: I did that with my daughter (soccer) for three years, by which time the girls outgrew and outperformed the ability of their coach to teach and improve their play. BUT: always good to take a big step or two back from time to time to assess the bigger picture, your relationship as dad, to make sure the coach/player dynamic is not trespassing!!
Neat article in NYT this AM about how Trotz has become, within space of less than a year, a beloved figure on the Island. I would say it should be up there for one of the stories of the year in NHL. It would be a hoot if he continued to haunt Pens.
In the Athletic today there was an article by Pierre with his predicitions for the East series' and 2 unidentified Eastern Conference non playoff team coaches.
Their predictions were very close to mine.
TBL vs CBJ (all agreed TB but closer than expected)
WAS vs CAR (all had WAS)
BOS vs TOR (all had BOS - one coach said this about the Leafs D: Its amazing how many goals they give up right now, he said. I think theyve been bad defensively for a while and the goalie was masking it. But when the goalie isnt playing as well, they give up way too many goals."
NYI vs PIT: one has NYI, one had PIT, and Pierre had this: "Penguins in 7. Game 7 goes to double OT."
That's what I root for in the playoffs. OT's and Game 7's, As a fan, nothing better in any sport than NHL Playoff OT and game 7's. When the stars align and you get the rare Game 7 OT holy shit.

Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak
DeBrusk-Krejci-Kuhlman
Johansson-Coyle-Heinen
Nordstrom-Acciari-Wagner
He named Letang series MVP.
ok, I made that up, but in his write-up he did say the series could go either way and he picked the Pens because he had to pick a winner.
good luck Tony, you were very classy in victory last year and I feel like Ovie is one of the more underrated super stars of this era. Yes, he's highly regarded, but it's not enough IMO. The rate he's putting up goals in this era is Gretzky-esque (era adjusted).
Another 100 goals in his career (easy IMO) he'll be 4th all-time. Another 200 he'd be 2nd, behind only Gretzky - and not by much. He's got over 200 more goals than Crosby (Crosby leads Ovie in points).
I don't expect him to put up 50-goal seasons every year, but 4 more decent years he'll be among the all-time greats if he's not already. He has 2 years left on his contract, so we'll see what he wants to do.
And I loved seeing his "cup tour" (heck, I like seeing all the players with the cup after they win).
Lol, Tony...I hate the Caps with every fiber of my being (Fuck John Druce!) but I'm happy you got your Cup. It really, really sucks to have been rooting for lottery position for a month. Freakin' Rangers....

No, sorry, didn't mean to make it seem that way. There was some ridiculously good individual offensive performances.
But overall goals per game were up only slightly from last year.

#3: WIN eliminated ASAP
#4: CBJ eliminated ASP
Pens defense is not trash, it's pretty deep and Murray has been great.
The Pens problem is their TEAM wide inattention to defense (forwards not covering).

I'm upset there is no Mike Tirico.
I think he was better than ANYBODY.
Jones has been a mess and Karlsson is not healthy.
Also surprised you don't like Nashville.
I don't hate Tirico, but that is a solid list. And i hope I don't have to hear one second from Jack Edwards until next year.

Karlsson is playing and IMO SJS have the best D in the playoffs.
Like I said just my opinions.
And the Predators might have the 2nd most well rounded/complete team in the West, but they do every year and they lose every year.
I had to pick an upset.
I wouldn't be even a little surprised if LVG and NSH win.
I don't hate Tirico, but that is a solid list. And i hope I don't have to hear one second from Jack Edwards until next year.
I thought Tirico doing hockey was better than anybody.

You should listen to Cuthbert. He and Emrick the class of the league right now IMO.
Bob Cole called his last game when MTL and TOR played and he retired right after the game, he's a legend but has lost his fastball, much better than Tirico - and in his day was probably the best or close.
All the people on the list IMO are better than Tirico.
I would start a thread for it, separate from the playoff thread, but i have my own men's league game so I won't be around to watch live.
another fan (maybe a Rangers fan since they have a lot riding on this) can start a thread if they want or it can be discussed here.

Sure Tampa had one of the all-time great seasons, but they were expected to do well. Maybe that puts him in the running for the Jack Adams but I have Trotz, Peters, and Brind'Amour as my top 3 names. Heck, I might even consider Craig Berube over Cooper for his turning around St. Louis in season.
Carolina picked 2nd in the draft and has had front office issues the past couple seasons.
I'd vote for Trotz simply because I think Carolina is more talented than the Islanders.

The NHL announced that defenseman Slava Voynov has been suspended for the 2019-20 season (including Playoffs) for unacceptable off-ice conduct. Voynov's eligibility to play in the NHL will be restored (assuming good behavior) no later than July 1, 2020.
If they never allowed him back again I'd be ok with it, but part of me also believes people deserve a 2nd chance.
He'll be 31 when he's eligible for reinstatement so it's not like a death sentence, but a punishment commensurate with the crime IMO.

Sure, I'm ready to lose until you take everything I own.
This is a really tough one. I think the Isles have a better shot of round 2 than TOR.
Ditto from this Caps fan! I can't stand the Penguins - plus Trotz facing the Caps in the playoffs a year after winning the cup for them would be great drama. Caps have to take care of business first, but I like the first round matchup - Caps didn't lose to Carolina this season.
Not having Kempny sucks though, but trading for Jensen was huge. As was the trade for Hagelin.
Let's go Caps!
That's something. I didn't see that one going any further than 6 and that fact enforces that. Ours is a toss up and I really have no idea what's going to happen.

hate this f-ing rule, but this one is offsides.
The Bob is going to get Torts fired.
better than TB/CBJ, this is playoff hockey
Islanders the more physical team, plus they got an unexpected PP goal. With the disallowed goal they beat Murray 3 times in the period and he has looked shaky.
Pens going to the PP on the island.
Barzal needs to shoot that puck
he's been great since the 1st period.

He's made a few nice saves but the story is that Columbus has dominated play the last 38 minutes
specials in the playoffs are huge (understatement?)
Real time I agree, looked dirty.
Talk about two different games from 1st period to 3rd. This might be good for TB in the long run. Heck, being down in this series 1-0 might be the first adversity they have faced all season!
That's going to be a long series - its why I laugh when fellow Rangers fans say our team never made it easy from 2011-2016. Nothing about this tournament is ever easy. 125 point Tampa has its hands full with the 8th seed folks.
Stars to the PP down 1 with just over half the game over
correction...19 year old Miro Heiskanen
At 2:30 or even 3....
I'm sure there are analytics but it's strange to me, common sense wise.
Unless of course you are in Ottawa and your coach insists on a girardi/staal combo at the end of games even as the GM plans to cut girardi and eat 6 years dead money afterwards (will never get over)
Tonight, just 3 games:
BOS vs TOR
WAS vs CAR
CAL vs COL
all three games have teams I'm really looking forward to seeing
I didn't catch the other games, unfortunately.
SH Penalty shot goal for Marner. Chara looking his age.
Leafs speed too much for B's so far, B's only goal coming on the PP and if Leafs stay out of the box they can force another home team to lose HIA, 3 - 1 Leafs after 2.
Tavares could have come close to icing it, but missed a breakaway end of the 2nd.
BOS and TBL lose games 1's at home.
Tkachuk was the epitome of a skilled agitator in this game, scores two goals (one ENG) and draws two penalties.
4 of the 5 games from opening night play tonight. Caps Canes get an extra day and play a matinee (3pm) tomorrow.

The Canes PP which has SUCKED for a decade continues to be their undoing though.
Tampa Bay badly needs to get to intermission and regroup.
I think it's 7 straight goals allowed.
Isles getting some help from the refs. Clearly going after Malkin, normally refs recognize that and adjust.
The penalties are there. Penguins are playing like the Seahawks daring officials to call everything and Wes McCauley and Brian Pochmara are all too happy to oblige.
Talented team eventually seizes control and escapes with win.

No, the Pens have 3 players, and no D. The Islanders are a much deeper team, especially on the blue line.

Yeah, like the Vegas golden knights who went to the Stanley cup finals last year. scrappy.
I picked the pens to win the series, but that's based on them getting the penalty calls, and they're not getting them so far through one and 2/3 games.
scrappy in the playoffs is a good trait.

at some point you can't get by "just" on skill, you need depth.

What are you talking about?
Pens are very very deep on O and defense.
Their problem is inattentiveness and luck management, not talent.
I've never heard anyone in 40+ years of hockey blame anything that has happened to their team on luck management.
the Pens are an aging team with no young talent and no depth and their D is horrible.
their depth is Guentzel, who is carried by Crosby. You can have an empty jersey play wing with Crosby and put up 80 points. You will see when Guentzel leaves Crosby like eveyr other winger has over their career.

rabbits feet, superstitions, don't pick up pennies that are tails, don't step on cracks, don't break mirrors, don't walk under ladders, don't let black cats cross your path, etc.
you know, stuff like that.
Typo obviously meant Pens D had the breakdown
Good 1st so far in WIN, tied up 1 - 1
That was not a fluke. The Penguins were gooning it up and the Islanders stayed disciplined. The Refs did not impact the outcome.

I didn't say it was a fluke nor did I say the refs were to blame.
I do think they called some pretty borderline penalties, but no the refs weren't the reason for the outcome - the Islanders outplayed the Pens. I Simply said in my OP the Pens need to win the series on special teams and I believe that to be true - if the series holds up with the Isles getting 3 times as many PP's it will be a short series, and normally in the playoffs right or wrong Crosby and Malkin get the borderline calls, they haven't so far. Quite the opposite, even when the Islanders goaded Malkin after the whistle, the refs took both.
Vegas quickly up 3-0
crazy 1st period.
and Sheifele ties it up in WIN with a 1 min left in the 2nd
both games 3 - 3 (different period intermissions)
5 min in to the 3rd
Such a stupid penalty completely out of frustration, I don't think it was as dangerous as the announcers made it out to be, but definitely can see him getting a game.

Happy Playoffs Saturday, friends!
So, I'm working with @NatStatTrick data to make playoffs charts. Let's start with a team thread based on almost no sample whatsoever because #playoffs.
shot rates - this is a Trotz thing I think

This behaves oddly when you're playing the same team repeatedly, so treat it as descriptive more than anything else.
I bet TBL was counting on more saves than this through the first two games.

Atmosphere wasnt off the hook last night. Pittsburgh is one of the dirtiest teams Ive ever seen. A complete gift that isles didnt have a dozen power plays. The Barzal is really generating a lot of chances and the power play looks dangerous.
Hopefully isles can get a split in Pitt and have a chance to close out at home at game 5.
Why no more games there if they advance?
I thought I saw on the post-game show they were tearing up the ice.
If the Islanders have more home games where will they play?

If they get to the 2nd round or beyond they are playing the home games at Barclays. They had to make a deal with Barclays just to get the first round in the coliseum and I'm guessing ownership had to just pay the difference in revenue.
I bet PIT is just hoping to extend the series long enough to go play at Barclays.
It can't be like the coliseum.

Pitt cant play at Barclays. All first round home games will be at the coliseum. Every round after that will be at Barclays.

I thought they said on the broadcast last night that was it for the coliseum and it looked like they showed them ripping up the ice - wishful thinking for a sweep?
or maybe it was just AJ Mileski or whatever her last name is who won't be doing games for them. I was half listening.

They might have a concert or something else while Islanders are in Pittsburgh and AJ is a moron
Kathryn Tappen is bigger than Jack Hughes.
They stood next to each other and I knew he was small for a hockey player, but I don't know how tall Kathryn Tappen is, but she was legit taller than him.
And 17 shots as a team is not good.

yep, look at the charts, Caps had an awful game, they were fortunate to win...if you believe the analytics.
I thought you wanted the Bolts Jets so you can get a better draft pick.

We need the Jets out ASAP. And I thought the Stars had to advance to the SCF in order for us to get their first, but they just need to go to the WCF.
Got it, will do. thank you for the advice.

Caps need more from Kuznetsov and Oshie today. Neither one had a shot on goal.

Much better effort so far today.
Walked right in. Canes getting rolled. I thought they'd have more fight than this.
Didn't score, so it's a win for the Caps, but that PP looked effective.
other note...I think the Bruins are on national NBC tonight, hoping that means no Jack Edwards.
Wild game.
Certainly seems that way. But stranger things have happened.
Leafs are flat footed.
2 for 2 on OT games today. You must be happy!

definitely. WAS ended too soon, and Orpik? It was a nice feed from Kuznetsov, but I wanted a lengthy OT ending with an Ovie blast from the face off circle.
anyway, beggars can't be choosers I guess.
I have no issue with that hit by Muzzin, very similar to hits the Bruins have been dishing out all game.
Oh, yeah, he'll definitely get a game at least IMO.
Boston/Toronto was ok, nice to see Toronto get dominated.
I'm liking this Calgary/Colorado series for some reason, I'm keeping my eye on it. 10 PM game on a Saturday night is just what I needed.
Didn't get to see Dallas/Nashville.
I wouldn't be surprised if Pittsburgh was swept by the Islanders. I do want that (and all series) to go 7 games.
I had Calgary vs Pittsburgh for my finals at the beginning of the playoffs.
Odd
I had Boston / Winnipeg. The jets prediction pretty clearly looks like a loser but with Tampa out of the way I'm thinking Washington my only obstacle in east. Boston looks a lot better than Toronto - doubt Anderssen can keep this going 7 games
I mean I said that... before the series began... but it looks as if I underestimated the Islanders. Maybe things will change going back to Pittsburgh?
I just said I wouldn't be surprised if the Pens got swept. Just feeling uncertain about my Pittsburgh pick now being down 0-2, that is all.
What a game!
He should be done for this series. And the Leafs should dump his ass after this season.
Lehner sparkling in net.
Crosby gets that call we deserve 4 pps by now
Captain obvious
That made me laugh. Like it's an adverb.
Reminds me of something that would be in Seinfeld.
Maybe they wanted to avoid the end of the Masters coverage? Not sure if they even did, or if it matters, I doubt hockey is stealing the Masters audience, but just a thought.
I hated it too.

I am not a golf fan (I find it painfully boring to play and to watch), but the ending this year was quite dramatic with Molinari choking and the cluster at the top and Tiger ultimately pulling it out. In the end though that was more during commercial breaks.

You're probably right about trying to avoid the masters, had the weather not moved up tee times this would have been prime time.
Really unfathomable to see the Islanders playing so well right now. Pens depth is getting exposed while Crosby and Letang are running on fumes. They've won cups before playing the kind of minutes they are saying they can't do it, but add in the injuries their roster had all year and it turns out the Islanders may have been a bad matchup for them the way they can roll 4 lines and 3 d pairs.
Can't believe Killorn didn't get roughed up more than that. Not sure if Bobrovsky sold that at all, but that was a pretty good hit Killorn laid on him.
Another reminder just how different and harder hockey is than other sports.
Amanda Kessel scored one of the shootout goals.
not without controversy though, Finland scored what was ruled the GW in OT and the celebration ensued, but after review the goal was disallowed for goalie interference. It did kind of look like goalie interference, but that was never called in hockey that way for a long time. Anyway, after that the game ended with the shootout and the US serenaded with boos.
since the tournament was in Finland.
The Lightning blocked 13 shots in that period. I don't know shot blocking averages, but that sounds like a lot.
Down 1 - 0 in the game and 2 - 0 in the series, without Kucherov, TB needs some desperation
Down 1 - 0 in the game and 2 - 0 in the series, without Kucherov, TB needs some desperation
Hedman is the biggest loss.
CBJ has dominated this series for 6.5 periods now. It's been literally Men against boys. Injury to Hedman or not this is pretty stunning.
almost 12 left in the 2nd, Jets on life support, like the Lightning.
Starting to feel like the league is just going to give the cup to the Bruins.
Lightning look dead but I wouldn't totally count them out. Columbus needs to end it on tuesday
That's why I love the NHL playoffs. You can load up on all the points you want in the regular season but it doesn't matter come playoff time. So much unpredictably could happen between any given matchup.
I'd cut off my big toe if Golden State lost their series to the LA Clippers or whoever they're playing right now.
Excited for the Avs/Flames tonight.
Stone with the hatty last night, Stastny contributing and Duchene leading the BJ's and Dzingel also making his presence known.
Even on a new team, the old Rangers are playing old Ranger playoff hockey. Shocking, lol!
Feeling good for the Isles fans on the board. Been awhile.
I need to be able to 100% hate Brad Marchand, and I still do, but keep putting videos out like this that humanize him and the hate will dull over time (and this is old)
Coffee with the Marchands - ( New Window )
He was woozy, tried to stand multiple times and couldn't and had to be helped off the ice.
Seeing him in the lineup, makes me less sympathetic to when these guys retire and try and sue the league. I don't have the medical details here and it has nothing to do with Krug being a Bruin, it just seemed pretty obvious.

I know you're down on the recent Rangers playoff teams, but one thing you can say for that group is they never backed down, never got just completely punked like what's happening to this Tampa group. McDonagh, Girari, Callahan are actually among the few I've seen on Tampa willing to pay the price so far.
As soon as bit of adversity has hit they've disappeared. Like they thought they could just carry over the free wheeling style into the playoffs. Columbus is playing a physical forechecking game and Tampa's stars have shown they want no part of it. They had 11 shots through two periods yesterday in a must win game. Columbus stands them up at the blue line (Jones and Werenski are just fantastic) and Tampa refuses to dump and go retrieve the puck.
Stamkos was invisible until he sucker punched Foligno late in the game.
Point is the best player on the Lightning right now.
When CAR clinched the WC1, I thought it was a "win" for WAS, since CBJ was MUCH tougher matchup.
Completely agree, Kyle, CBJ has completely outwitted, outphysicalled, and outplayed TB. You're right, I am overly negative on recent NYR playoff teams, but part of the reason I felt that way is exactly what you're seeing in this series..the unwillingness of TB to get down and dirty with CBJ. I agree, they're showing that they want no part of the physical game. The 2-2-1 is killing them, and the freewheeling style, like the NYR before them, isn't playoff hockey and hasn't been for a long time.
Hughes and Kakko as expected respective #1's (North America and International).
Movement will still happen, Thursday the U18 begins (Hughes and others will be there) and a couple weeks after the Worlds (Kakko and maybe some others) and those tournaments will and should impact the draft.

is much better than the typical 8 seed. They have a ton of talent. Tampa did win 62 games for a reason, they have a great roster. But this has been no fluke, not like a hot goalie is stealing it from them. They've been outplayed, outworked, out-everything. I'd kind of be surprised if they avoid the sweep.

I disagree though on the Rangers points. those Rangers teams always battled and played physical. Remember the Tortorella teams blocking a million shots? Pittsburgh in 2016 first round is the one time I can say they went down meekly without much of a fight. Respectfully, I think you're off base here with the comparison. The 2012-17 Rangers have very little in common with what's happening to Tampa besides the players that played on both teams.

Yes, I meant the post Torts teams that relied on their speed. The Torts teams had the opposite problem, no playoff scorer.

Agreed. After last year, as a Caps fan, I wanted no part of Columbus in the first round.
I wonder if anything happens to Cooper in Tampa if they are swept. They just extended him but to get swept in this fashion is just brutal.

Fair, but they never had a total capitulation like what's happening to Tampa. Two years in a row the AV teams came back from 3-1 deficits to win series. They battled
It's funny, I think that he is generating more interest than anything Nathan MacKinnon has done in his Avs tenure.
At 20 (Makar's age) MacKinnon put up a 50-point NHL season.
Interested to see how Makar fares if he steps right in
He's another in a long line of 5' 10 - 5' 11" puck moving defensemen that are becoming the NHL norm these days.
Can he withstand the physical toll of NHL forwards?

Torontos Nazem Kadri has been suspended for the remainder of the First Round for Cross-checking Bostons Jake DeBrusk.
This is Kadri's FIFTH suspension for a headshot.
Torres' fifth suspension was the remainder of series vs LA. Then his 6th was 41 games.
No clue what Svechnikov was thinking there. Ovi isn't a fighter, but he's tough and when he wants to, he hits like a tank. And it seemed like Svechnikov initiated it.
PJ...you agree?
Might be a long time until he's in another. Who wants to get knocked out?

Yep, but in this game, the Bruins IMO instigated with Kadri all game. Normally I'd say Kadri is a POS and should be suspended the rest of the playoffs, but the refs let it go, let it go, let it go, and then this is what happens. There were cheap shots all game on Kadri from multiple Bruins players.
So, with context considered I'd have given him two games.

The Bruins were able to accumulate premium draft picks by selling off players like Lucic, Boychuk, Hamilton, Martin Jones
I'm not sure if the Pens have players like that unless they blow up their core (and trade Keseel and Letang, maybe Schultz or Murray).
I think they have to try and salvage the rest of Crosby and Malkin's careers (6 more years and 3 more years under contract respectively), so they don't have much choice but to try and rebuild on the fly IMO.
Should have scored. Tavares looks like he never met a puck before. he's playing really tight.
Rask injured.
Bergeron not looking like his usual self.
$300 stick breaks on a wrist shot.
the way these guys go through sticks is remarkable.
Krejci stopped with a ridiculous save by Andersen
yep, these guys all overpass. in that case I feel like Krejci (?) knew it would get blocked and he was running out of time.
Avs running away with this.

Pens should do what the Bruins did after 2014, not a rebuild but a 2 year refresh. Follow that model. They refreshed around older vets like Bergeron, Marchand, Chara, Krejci, and Rask.

Id sell Kessel, Hornqvist, Rust. That should help retool.
Id deal Letang if theres a real good offer.
Wouldnt that pretty much be the equivalent of the Bruins?

When you consider performance and contracts you are not trading anyone who has value.
Anyway, I don't think this:
is close to:
Martin Jones: legit playoff caliber starting goalie
Lucic: (at the time): One of the premier power forwards
Hamilton: Legit, young, top 4 D
Boychuk: Legit stay-at-home top 6 D, top 4 on some teams
Kessel IMO is mostly a PP guy. Hornqvist and Rust 3/4th liners. Rust playing with Crobsy is like Namestnikov playing last year with Stamkos and Kucherov, but Namestnikov is better than Rust.
Then, even if you can trade those guys for similar draft pick value that the Bruins got.
You still need to nail picks like Pastrnak, Heinen, deBrusk, Carlo, and McAvoy.
Plus, the Bruins already had Bergeron, Marchand, Krejci, Chara, and Rask as their core.

why would anyone have thought that???
18 shots is not going to cut it - and 8 of those were from two players (Ovie and Backstrom). The Caps were lucky to win game 1, and if they are going to have a chance in game 4 the other lines have to get the puck on the net.

Ooof
I guess he grew up idolizing Ovi, maybe feels like "in order to be that man, you have to beat the man"?
but in that spot it was one of the dumbest things I've seen.
and he and his team, are going to pay the price.
You could tell Ovi didn't even want any part of it.
Reardon should replace Djoos with Siegenthaler and see what happens (Djoos has been awful), and think about switching up one of the other lines, and/or sitting one of the forwards from the 3rd or 4th lines. Reardon should do something different to light a fire under their butts.
He's not much shorter than Ovi, but he gives up 40 lbs to him. And he was knocked out cold by three solid punches by Ovi.
I don't underestimate Ovi even a little bit. Read the thread. The guy is big, savvy, and he hits like a tank when he want to. Which is why Svechnikov picking a fight with him is even more idiotic. You want to fight a Russian to impress your fellow countrymen pick a fight with Kuznetzov. Ovi is Svechnikov punching up a couple weight classes.
It definitely didn't seem heat of the moment, it seemed like Svechnikov told himself before the game he was going to do it.
There wasn't even a real "that guy pissed me off" moment. It seemed really incidental until Svechnikov kept badgering Ovi.
And I think it will have the opposite effect you suggest Kyle. Getting knocked out by someone doesn't scream that guy has balls. It screams what an idiot.
Sure, show you're tough by dropping the gloves with someone to protect a teammate, guys eat that up, but pick a fight with a legend and get knocked out (and out of the next game) I don't see that generating much admiration.
Oh, LOL. Sorry. my fault.
Seeing him now he looks normal and he feels great, BrindAmour said. Thats a real positive. Were going to be real careful.

Id sell Kessel, Hornqvist, Rust. That should help retool.
is close to:
You sell Kessel (1st), Hornqvist, Letang, Maata(2nd), I think you fetch similar value and can build around Crosby, Malkin, Geuntzel, Schultz, Dumolin, Murray.
Nobody is giving a 1st for Kessel or a 2nd for any of the others (especially Maata who cant crack the lineup) and assume their salaries.
Hamilton got a 1st and 2 2nd's.
Lucic got a 1st and Sean Kuraly
Martin Jones got a 1st and Colin Miller (unprotected in Vegas draft)
Boychuk got 2 2nd's
f-ing Lee Stempniak got a 2nd
and then, like I said, you need to hit on your picks.
Pastrnak is a stud, star player
McAvoy is a 25 min per game top line D
deBrusk is a top 6 forward
Brandon Carlo is a top 4 D
Jakob Forsbacka-Karlsson is a top 9 forward
Danton Heinen is a top 9 forward. top 6 on many teams
Donato netted Charlie Coyle a legit 3rd line forward who can play PK
Not saying it's impossible for the Pens, but it's a longshot IMO to re-tool on the fly.
I think they're more likely to try and trade picks to shed bad contracts - and then blow it up in a couple years.

My hope would be they could re-tool on the fly the next 2 years, get some significant good youth to make one more push before Crosby Malkin retire.
I'm afraid the current team has too many miles on them and needs a major jolt of youth/players getting better as opposed to already playing at their best.
Dead now.

Yep! Cant wait to hear all the excuses from the locals down here.
It's up there no doubt. They tied the league record for wins in a season and get swept in the first playoff series? Huge disappointment.
It's definitely in the conversation but I don't think anything tops 18-1!
Pacioretty going beast mode in Vegas.
Go Leafs go!

I always like to see immediate Wikipedia page updates. Last night on the JACKETS page (not even the TB one), somebody put on there that Columbus was the beneficiary of a choke job nobody had seen since The Sopranos aired.

Goalie charts are updated.
In small sample series against one opponent, goaltending looms large -- in that way, it's no surprise to see where Murray/Lehner and Vasilevskiy/Bobrovsky plot here.

So to recap: #Hurricanes almost certainly will be without their fourth-leading goal scorer (Svetchnikov had 20, all at even strength) and Ferland, who was fourth on the team in points (40).
Hell has officially frozen over.

I just saw this. I don't know what to say.
As much as spring will suck now, Im relieved its not the cock sucking Caps who beat us. If you play the Caps kick their ass.
As for the Pens, need to get younger hungrier. Move Ketang, Kessel, Hornqvist, Maata, and Johnson. Retool with youth.
Fuck Washington.
Most of the time I think he's the Bruins best forward, but he hasn't had a good 3 games.
He needs to wake up if the Bruins want to win, but based on the way the Bruins rebounded in game 2, I expect game 4 to be more of the same.
Looking forward to tonight. Hope the hitting is like it's been the past two.
You might say Tampa got steamrolled.
You'd think both NYI/CBJ would be highest given that they've actually advanced.
Bruins went up 2 - 0, Leafs fought back, 2nd one for the Leafs looked kind of soft.
His first of the series. he was benched it seemed much of the 1st period.
Another phantom penalty on the Leafs.
B's back up 2
4 - 0 6 min still left in the 1st in Dallas.
This series looks like it will be tied up too.
still think it's over.
this would be an epic collapse for the Bruins (payback for 2011?) make it happen hockey gods.
I wonder if that's happened before.

You can throw analytics and corsi out the window at playoff time. Its heart and balls that matter at this time of year. The teams that have this usually win. When talent doesnt work hard or battle you have zero chance of winning.

Agreed with Theo to an extent. The talent still goes a long way, but it needs to come with an increased compete level come playoff time. Heard a comment on Hockey Central the other day, maybe by Marc Savard, saying some guys don't understand how big a difference there is between regular season and playoffs. That if you think you competed well at a certain level that was good enough for the regular season, you better raise that in the playoffs or you'll be gone quick.
Colorado, despite being an 8 seed, has a top line that could stack up against anybody talent wise. And those guys have really brought it, they raised the effort level and are dominating when they're out there. Contrast with what Calgary's top guys are doing, or whatever happened to Tampa, and there's a clear gap in battle level and effort.
I think sometimes it takes an elimination or two to realize what it takes. especially for young guys. But that's why Tampa remains so baffling. Those guys have all been through deep playoff runs. To basically no show for the majority of that series, I've never seen anything like it.
The BJ's added significantly at the deadline.
Duchene is a legit all-star, Dzingel is a solid contributor, a grinder, invaluable type.
and they kept their tradeale players. I think that sent a huge message to the locker room.
they are just flying right now.
and Seth Jones and Zack Werenski are very possibly the top D pair in the league.
overall though I agree with the post Kyle.
I agree on COL and I said as much in my OP about COL top line after BOS top line "...Colorado's top line of MacKinnon, Rantanen and Landeskog isn't far behind" but what is surprising me the most is COL D and Grubauer.
Credit to Torts as well who seemed to push all the right buttons. He's a great coach who gets every ounce out of his teams
Caps have no answer for Foegele
that stings, giving up a late goal (or it's a huge lift scoring it)
No idea if Foegele will be suspended.
Agree, but not sure the NHL cares about intent on the dangerous plays. I'm terrible at guessing suspensions.
No history for Foegele either.
SJS still up 2 - 1 in a potential handshake game (for LVG)
Not that we Rangers fans are complaining. That Hayes ALMOST goal is going to haunt them if they lose this series.
Speaking of which, Steve Yzerman will be named the GM of the Red Wings
What a weird year. Door too wide open for the Bruins. Need a Leafs win tonight.
Matthews scores with 8 and a half left in the 3rd to put the Leafs up 1 - 0
2 - 0 Leafs,
Rielly is a good puck mover.
hate this f-ing rule.
Headed back to TOR Easter Sunday, with the Leafs up 3 - 2.
best series in the playoffs
Hope so.
With two sweeps our chances at game 7's was obviously reduced.
I think the Bruins series goes 7 and it will be epic.
Hope so. Any 7 game series is great, rivalry ones are just a little better.
So I hope for OT's game 7's and rivalry series.
If Grubauer played like this, Av's will be a tough out. Rantanen and Mackinnon in absolute beast mode.

Depends who makes it to the conference finals I think.
If any teams that finished the regular season with a worse record than the Jets make it to the conference finals their pick (the Rangers picks) moves up from 22, so potentially #22 can move up 4 spots.
those teams include CAR, COL, LVG, DAL, CBJ, and STL
so Rangers fans want to see CAR and CBJ go far in the East and any of those remaining teams in the West.
I think the best the Rangers can get is 18, worst is 22.
last two picks of the 1st are the stanley cup finals teams, obviously the winner picks last.
the next lowest two picks are the conference finals losers, in reverse standings order.
then the remaining playoff teams from 27 to 16 are reverse order of the regular season standings.
with the Lightning and Flames being eliminated it's a good thing for the Rangers, they just need those teams I mentioned who finished with a worse record than the Jets to make it to the conference finals and they would pick after the Rangers improving the Rangers pick from the current spot of 22 based on reverse standings order of the Jets.

I don't see the NHL trying to gift wrap a championship for the Caps as there have not been many questionable calls so far (versus prior years). Who'd guess that Tampa and Calgary would absolutely collapse? Reading the message boards of Hockey's Future the entire second half of the year people were saying that all of the top 6-7 teams in the West could not be ruled out in terms of who will make it to the Stanley Cup Finals. The amount of parity among the playoff teams this year was absurd.

Sorry, I worded it wrong. I didn't mean by 'league is trying' that there was some sort of conspiracy. I just can't recall a year where the divisional top 2 seeds very well could be knocked out in all divisions but the metro in round 1. 2-6 for higher seeds overall. Crazy parity. Sets up home ice for the caps throughout and just means they are now the overwhelming favorites.
I think Boston got hosed on an over the glass delay of game call, but they killed it off.
Rielly is really good, hasn't seen much of him.
Bruins to the PP. Dumb penalty by TOR.
I don't see them winning in Boston on Tuesday night.
Donskoi got ragdolled holy shit
so underestimated, and I hate that NHL refs make the faceoffs about themselves.
Shits the bed most of the playoffs and then turns out tonight's performance to force game 7.
wonder if he keeps it up for game 7 or if he turns back into a pumpkin
If you look at the stats there is no way San Jose should've even been in the game.
I think he'll rebound with a strong game 7.....but will Martin Jones?
Burns and Hedman last two winners, but Giordano really should win. And it should be a landslide.
Selke also announced. Bergeron, ROR, and Stone.
I think upon his retirement this trophy should become the Bergeron Award, he just epitomizes what the award is about, if you had NHL game film and just watched Bergeron and how he thinks the game and how selfless he is defensively it's amazing. that said, I think Crosby deserved at least to be nominated this year and Bergeron, probably did not. He's getting up there in age.
I think ROR probably deserves to win, just a thorn in opponents #1 centers side all game every game.

Had a small wager on Vegas last night, unbelievable. Game plays out pretty much as expected as far as who is carrying play. But the worst goalie in the playoffs, statistically, makes 58 stops. Lol
Caps need to maintain their physical punishment. Whichever team is more physical dominates in this series.
The Caps had 48 hits in game 5. Carolina had 52 in game 3.
Been wrong on nearly every single prediction I made so far, LOL.
I feel like there's no point in me even trying to predict anything at this point, because it's just relentless chaos at this point, but (I think) I disagree.
I think Bishop's season has been underrated all year (except for his Vezina nomination) and I think it continues tonight with a strong effort on home ice.

Canes getting some chances.
I was thinking that Ovi is probably the best player since Gretzky.

Pretty sure he just means Bishop ... and the Stars... weren't talked about much all year. Flew under the radar -- except for Seguin and Benn being called out by their owner in November anyway.
Bishop has been good but their defense is vastly improved from years past. Heiskanen is a stud.
Preds score. Watson on the rebound of a Subban wrist shot, take s 1 - 0 lead looking to force game 7 back home
That should count, I think, but Im biased.
Williams with a horseshoe up his ass tip tp give the Canes a 2-goal lead.

Lemieux was better than all, Jagr > OV and Crosby.
Why is that?
Rangers already struck gold with #2. Getting a potential 28th overall pick from Dallas most likely doesn't move the needle.
Boston / Washington probably for the stanley cup at this point. So many upsets in the west, doubt any of these teams can hang with the remaining East heavyweights.
Oh how I want the Canes to win.....I'm still talking about John F'ing Druce....I hate the Caps THAT much.
That power play has to get someone fired, even if it's just some assistant coach. With maybe the best puck moving defense in the league, 4 legitimate top pair guys, there's no way Nashville should go 0/15 on the PP. They get one with two minutes left in the game and don't even get a shot. Cost them this series.
They are a defensive team. Their goal scoring comes from three players and really Forsberg is the only reliable option.
That said I 100% agree, their PP coach should be fired (I think it's Kevin McCarthy) and I wouldn't be surprised to see Lavy move on either.

True, but a 28th overall pick is a lot better than a mid-late 2nd rounder. They found Chytl late in the first, maybe they can do it again?
Don't count on Boston or Washington quite yet. They still have to play a game 7 each.
Yup - not even the worst, MTL had 31. Isles also only had 33 and CBJ only 34

Canadiens PP coach (Kirk Muller) did a worse job IMO, especially once Shea Weber came back. He was hamstrung a little bit because Jonathan Drouin is like the Nuke Laloosh of hockey. If the Canadiens were even the poor side of average on the PP they would have been in the playoffs.
The good one:
In the last five years, seven teams have swept an NHL playoff series. Six of those seven went on to win their next round. And with that, the only team that lost the next round was also facing a team that swept the previous round (the Sharks lost to Vegas last year), so 6 out of 7 was the best possible mark those 7 teams could've had.
The bad one:
Since 2000, three teams have swept a first round playoff series and then faced a team that went to Game 7 in the previous round. The team that went 7 won the next series all 3 times. Last time this type of matchup occurred was 10 years ago.
Three years as a head coach, no playoff appearances. Why do you think he's great?
Loved him as a player, no clue how he is as a coach.
I know the Canadiens PP (as cited above) was league worst and he coached it, but they don't have much PP talent with Pacioretty and Galchenyuk traded so I don't blame just him for that. But I think they'll get better with Kotkaniemi, Suzuki, Poehling, and more on the way.

Neither is relevant. Every series is a brand new series. All I know is the Rangers destroyed Atlanta a decade ago, then went out in 6 to Buffalo. The following year desposed of NJ which had been a thorn in our side for 15 years in 5 ... then got bounced quickly by Pittsburgh. In 2006 I think it was, NJ destroyed us in a sweep... then lost fairly easily to Carolina.
Trotz against his old team next round would be interesting... but I'm still rooting for the Canes.

Game 7 OT's are like Christmas and the 4th of July rolled into 1
they don't have a D who I'd consider acquiring for a team I was starting other than Morgan Rielly.

You need to pull out a gun to get a penalty called on you in front of the net at this point.
Yup. Mo more whistles.
Too bad they spent all their cap room on Tavares. LOL
So sick of Boston
Lose to the Bruins.
If you said no goals from Bergeron, Marchand, Pastrnak, or Krejci, and no PP goals, you'd think the Leafs would have to win, but no, the Bruins own them.
In a lot of ways improving so much (worst to playoffs) in Matthews first year didn't do this franchise good. They are up against the cap and terrible on Defense. Andersen played well this series but shaky resume overall but I'm not sure how many goalies would be good behind a defense this bad. The third Boston goal tonight and basically series clincher was a clinic in how not to play neutral ice defense against a 4th liner no less.
I will say while they should beat Columbus and probably Washington - that sequence would be challenging from a physicality standpoint. Those teams play heavy games....
You sound bitter and that's quite a statement given how strong the Metro is likely to be next few years

WAS needs to beat CAR and while they should, in a game 7 anything can happen and losing Oshie is huge. Bruins are 100% healthy.
Hate to say it, but CBJ is my only hope.

Mets just destroyed the Phillies to take sole possession of first, waiting for isles to start round 2, pos Tavares knocked out and can watch isles play on, nfl draft on Thursday (Giants with two first round picks), the baby is even finally sleeping, its all good :)
Dont agree with you on the metro. Pens look old, WSH is aging and has a light farm, CLB emptied out for this years run, NJD and NYR nowhere close despite lottery luck (NYR better positioned long term due to shrewd deadline though) IMO. Doubt you agree but I like NYI and CAR going forward short to medium term and Ill throw in WSH short term too. Atlantic looks tougher going forward short term IMO.

It's like God decided all their whining and self-centered self loathing over 100 years was more worthy of attention than legitimate suffering in Africa, poverty generally and other serious issues.
Yankee time!
Yankee time!
Assuming you're a Sharks fan, I hope you didn't change the channel...!
Game 7 wow
Have any of the sports avoided an officiating controversy in the postseason this year?
Heart breaking loss for Vegas. How will those long suffering fans cope?
Looking at the ice times for the Leafs forwards last night, I'm not quite sure what Babcock was doing. He's distributing ice time like it's a game in January when his top guys actually had a lot of jump and he could have rode them. Matthews plays under 19 minutes. Marner hit almost 21 but down two goals after the first, I'm thinking you shorten the bench and Marner/Matthews/Tavares should be pushing 24-25 minutes. Empty the tank.
Shame for them cause they have a good team that's caught some tough breaks with the division realignment. But now they're cap crunched and they're still just the third best team in the division.
In retrospect their Marleau signing was really short-sighted. They'd have been better off continuing to rebuild in Matthews early years. I guess they had no way of knowing they'd get JT though.
I also found Babcock's comments after the game really odd about how they are still in 'rebuild process' - I guess he's trying to buy himself time. You're right -- some bad luck being in the Bruins/Lightning division, but they just don't strike me as a team built for the playoffs. Their defense plain sucks.
Not sure about Columbus' situation after this year (is it a given they will lose a lot of players?) and I agree with you that Pittsburgh needs to shake things up (never count out a Crosby/Malkin nucleus though) - but short-term (next 2-3 years) the Capitals are still one of the toughest outs in hockey and the Hurricanes continue to improve.
Medium term, Rangers and Devils are both rebuilding the right way, just lucked into franchise players, and will cap room to build around young talent. Flyers finally found their star goaltender so we'll see there.
It's going to be a tough division for a long time -- I respect the hell out of Trotz, he's a hall of fame coach no doubt... but to just pencil in the Islanders for 2nd/3rd round+ appearances for the next 5-10 years while the Leafs continuously watch them on TV... seems a little brazen to me.

Marleau was a brutal signing. They had to at least have some idea they'd get a shot at Tavares, right? Like you, I'm a bit confused. 6.2 million on the books for him next season and they still need to get Marner under contract. He's going to want close to the 11 they gave Matthews. I do wonder if anyone comes after him with an offer sheet.
Babcock's comments certainly won't go over well. This is a team supposed to win now that still can't get out of the first round. The rebuild is over and they're pretty much locked into this roster. Weak defense and a decent, but not great goalie that let in two clunkers last night.
They need another guy on defense. Toronto was probably the better team last night. Rask played fantastic, though.

Speaking as someone who lives in Vegas and roots for the Knights as sort of a 1a to my Devils, this citys attachment to this team is amazing. These players volunteer in the community, and you cant drive a block or two without seeing a Knights flag or a car sticker or something.
But yeah let me know when Vegas has the right to suffer enough to discuss a bad call. Is it 5 years? 10? 20?

Of course we should discuss the bad call. IMO, NHL should require all major penalties to clear a video replay. If we're going to have that stupid offside rule, might as well replay major penalties too.
Not going to lie, after Pacioretty's goal I turned off the game and turned on the Office (I'm in a hotel room not that that matters) and my phone starting blowing up, I got texts from some buddies and turned the game back as the PP was starting.
I think the call was obviously wrong (it wasn't eakin, but someone got their stick up), but it's not reviewable and I say this and I'd be consistent even if it was my team getting shafted, you win some of those and you lose some.
Vegas happened to lose in a bad spot. Still it's on them for falling completely apart and allowing 4 goals in 4 min.
MAF had been incredible to that point and he fell apart. The tipped shot I don't blame him for, but the other three I think he could have saved.
Also, the Eakin goal was a high stick, no clue how they didn't waive that off.
I don't think this story is about the refs, I think it's about the Golden Knights brutal PK. At least they showed enough heart to tie it up.
Anyway, one game tonight, Caps Canes game 7, looking forward to it.
I love Ovi's antics, and he's earned them IMO.
would you believe acquaintances or I made it all up, there were no texts?
and to be clear I never said friends.
no worries, you have Mr game 7.
Good luck!!

I would have believed acquaintances. But not them texting you first.
Me, too (except for the beers part).
Just make it interesting.
Last night's theatrical affair is going to be a hard one to top.

IMO Columbus is the favorite from the east and St Louis from the west.
Dont get the Boston love.
And Pit isnt old, theyre stale and need to get some young hungry youth in the supporting cast. I wouldnt mind dealing Letang and Kessel to get rid of the poor defensive reads.

Why Columbus
31st oldest forward group in the NHL (there are only 31 teams)
22nd oldest defense group
30th oldest overall team
goalie (3rd youngest) is the only thing that keeps them from being the leagues oldest team.
Before next season Crosby is 32, Malkin 33, Kessel 32, Letang 32
that's an old team whether you want to admit it or not.
NHL teams roster breakdown by age - ( New Window )
that's a sign of a cup favorite now that the #1 team and the other team that tied them at 2 are eliminated.
CBJ was impressive sweeping TBL obviously, but I think this is as far as they go.
CAR, not CAT, no idea what that D who pinched was thinking
Aho loses the puck on a 2 on 1 that could have tied it
They have to feel like for a team down a goal, they have the Caps where they want them.
hoping for OT, but CAR has all the momentum
Let's goooooo
Now CAR dictating play, Caps have no forecheck
Hate that it's a penalty, but it's consistently called.
Both teams with too many men, neither team called for it.
Hate that it's a penalty, but it's consistently called.
No calls both ways
Last nights OT game was better.
And Bruins Leafs game 7 better than both (better played game - other than the Andersen softie)

You think the Bruins leafs game was better than the sharks knights game?
By the way Reardon has got to be the second most out of shape fat sloth to sit behind a bench in recent years - only to Hitchcock. Positively if the Caps lose and they have to watch Trotz going forward their fans are going to be pissed.

Crosby, Malkin, Letang, Kessel all are in their prime still, though Malkin had a bad year.
Geuntzel is young, Demoulin, Schultz are in their prime.
Its not really an old team with aging past their peak players.
Their d hardly has an aging Dan Girardi type, they just dont have too many very young players (although Petterson, Blugger were rookies and to a lesser extent Ashton Reese, Simon.
They need to freshen up but they hardly are over the hill.
Teravainen was an add-in so the Canes would take on the Bickell contract, but many other options.
Columbus reminds me of the 1999 Knicks, took a little time for all those deals to come together but they did. This isnt some fluke, theyre a damn good team and shoulda beat in the Caps last year.
St Louis and Columbus have been on fire, I put more weight on that then a Bruins te that squeezes by a so so Leafs team.

there are facts and there are opinions.
it's a fact that the Pens have the 2nd oldest team in the league. Plus they have the oldest youngest player. Guentzel is their youngest player and he's already over 24 years old.
that's not a good mix.
what you state is an opinion, I'm simply giving you facts. You can say they're not an old team, but the facts don't support you in any way.

Did Columbus not just sweep the best team in hockey while the Bruins defeated a loser Toronto franchise?
Amazing how theyre seen as a fluke.
I hope they 2012 LA Kings everybody.
Another supposed fluke.
Or even 2017 Preds beating Chicago 4-0.

Lies damn lies and stats.
They arent relying on 35 plus aging players.
Its mature, seasoned, but this is not the Kings or Blackhawks.
That age stat in it of itself is misleading and needs context.
They lack any 20-22 year olds, and are mostly filled with 27-32 year olds still very effective.
Give them a few young/mid 20s good players and theyre fine.
Again this isnt the Blackhawks or Kings.
It is. They're just not calling anything right now
Quote:
When a goalie or defender knocks off his own net. It should be automatic... it's more egregious than a defender shooting puck over defensive glass

I don't think I've ever seen a goalie called for it. And Jonathan Quick used to pull that stunt a lot.

Lol I was thinking of that exact play
I always say I want refs to call the game consistently and not ref the game situation, but in this case I agree with them
?? He got leveled in the blue paint. Hagelin doesn't have a right to be there. He probably didn't know where he was and that is was the goalie he leveled but it's absolutely 2 minutes in the box.
I have no idea why Eddie said Mrzek tried to sell it. He got leveled I. His goalie crease. Doesn't get more clear cut than that.
Should have
Quote:
Mrazek tried to pick Hagelin and draw the penalty. technically probably still a penalty, but I like the no call.

you're right. it should 100% technically by the rule be a penalty. I'm just saying I'm ok with it not being called in OT of a game 7 when Mrazek pretty much could have avoided it - which is sort of the spirit of the rule

Columbus and Tampa both choked. They shoulda beaten them.
I went 3 for 8 in the 1st round (BOS, SJS, and DAL) so don't call me out for my picks, I'm probably not going to be right.
I don't think CBJ will be able to handle the physical game Boston will bring. They're not TOR soft, but they have quite a few finesse guys.
So BOS > TOR
I think STL vs DAL will be a phenomenal series. If DAL top line plays like they did against NSH they could win. I think their depth hurts and Binnington continues to lead a charmed life.
STL > DAL
CAR vs NYI is anyone's guess. I like CAR's youth, if they get Svechnikov and Ferland back I like their chances more. If not, it will be tough. In a toss up...
CAR > NYI
COL is the most fun team to watch in hockey, and the Sharks you can say are the most experienced, I'm taking experience.
SJS > COL

waahhh... random people on the Internet don't think we're going to win the Stanley Cup!! Some of you need a pacifier. My goodness.
PJ didnt do anything 'weak' here and you know it.
FMIC - Holtby was fine i thought in this series. The third goal last night was relatively soft, but he made a number of terrific saves too. Caps just weren't very good without Oshie. Very top heavy, thoroughly unimpressed with their depth.
Without giving up that goal, the Caps advance.
He made some decent saves in the series, but two of the goals last night were soft, and he's looked out of sorts at other times in the series.
But a goalie at that level can't have that much of a fundamental breakdown in a game 7.
I think Isles should be favored vs CAR. The Isles disciplined defensive structure and superior blue line players should create problems for CAR. I think we'll see a lot of games where Carolina outshoots/out "Corsi"'s the Isles, but Isles get the better opportunities. Isles will have to PDO them to death to win.
IMO, the winner of this series has a great shot at the cup. No one in the west looks imposing, and the best team remaining (BOS) looked a bit tired and slow versus a one-dimensional Leafs team. Looking forward to see how CLB does vs BOS.
Isles Charlotte meetup group is already organizing a huge tailgate for Game 4 and has ~100 commitments. I expect a solid amount of blue an orange in Raleigh.
Picking the playoffs is a useless errand, but I'll go ahead anyway:
Isles in 6
Jackets in 6
Blues in 5
Sharks in 7
I think missing Kempny was a huge deal for the Caps. The drop off from the top 6 defensemen vs #7, 8 (Djoos, Siegenthaler) was huge. Made Canes forechecking more effective, made clearing the puck more difficult, and caused the Caps D to just seem out of synch. I think they missed Kempny more than Oshie.
Just my opinion.
He had a .914 save % for the series - Carolina won because they were better up front. Without Oshie, the Caps have just 3-4 players who scare you (Ovi, Backstrom, Kuz - who was really quiet this series, and Carlson).
I'm not sure where the Caps go from here - as great as Ovi is, at some point age will catch up to his rough style, they are really thin, and Reardon can't hold Trotz jock behind the bench.
It only cost them one goal IMO, the tying goal, but it was apparent he wasn't right for a decent stretch.

How so? I am a Habs fan and a hockey. I hate the Bruins and the Leafs.
What was passive aggressive about anything I posted?
I have opinions about which team will win series and which one won't.
I am not passively aggressive at all. I don't think the Islanders have a great team. I predicted Las Vegas to finish historically bad last year and they lost in the SCF, no one is perfect.
If I'm wrong I'm wrong, but I don't make any predictions out of hatred of any teams (except the Bruins, sometimes I picked them to win in a reverse psychology way).
Also, to help jinx the Bruins, my daughter asked for me to take her to a playoff games. Tickets were $375 for loge so I said F-that. If I'm shelling out big dollars for a playoff game for a team I hate it's going to be a Cup finals game. So I bought tickets for stnaley cup finals home game 2 for the Bruins. It was a lot more than $375 per ticket and I'm hoping I get my money back from ticketmaster.
In any event, KDubbs can go stroke one out now because I do have the Islanders advancing past Carolina this round in 6 or 7 games.
Of course, I then have them getting their shit pushed in by Boston in 5 games tops, but you guys can kick and scream all you like when that time comes.
As the most negative Isles fan around, yes I actually have bought in to them maybe actually being good and not just cheering on a barely 8th seed isles team like the past. This team has 2 things they havent had in ages, the coach and the goalie.
When his mental health and substance abuse issues were made known it kind of made sense, because no one ever doubted the physical ability.
I wonder even with his talent though, how far he can carry a team.

Hard to argue. Boston is the only team remaining in the Stanley Cup playoffs the Isles haven't beaten.
Carolina: 3-1
Columbus: 3-1
Boston: 0-2-1
Sharks: 1-1
Avalanche: 2-0
Blues: 2-0 (though this is misleading.. they badly outplayed us in both games)
Stars: 1-1
Also, I need a life. That was all from memory.
Stars in 6
Columbus in 5
Sharks in 7
AAAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
He had a .914 save % for the series - Carolina won because they were better up front. Without Oshie, the Caps have just 3-4 players who scare you (Ovi, Backstrom, Kuz - who was really quiet this series, and Carlson).
I'm not sure where the Caps go from here - as great as Ovi is, at some point age will catch up to his rough style, they are really thin, and Reardon can't hold Trotz jock behind the bench.
Everything fell apart after that first soft goal from Holtby. And Kuz did not do well on that second one.
And going into the playoffs without Kempny was a big problem too.
But at least the Caps didn't embarrass themselves like the Penguins or Lightning.
I (or someone else) can start a new thread or we can just keep this one.,
Tonight,
Bruins vs BJ's game 1 at the Garden. I don't think the BJ's can keep up with the Bruins physicality. Rask was very good for the most part in round 1. So was Bob. the BJ's need to take advantage of Chara. I really don't get why the Bruins keep running him out there (and why they extended him). And the BJ's need to take advantage of the small Bruins D (Krug and Grzelcyk) and most importantly stay out of the box. that Bruins power play is lethal.
Also tonight:
STL vs DAL in STL. STL is one of those solid teams. I mentioned in the OP, they have scoring (Tarasenko ROR, Schenn, etc.) but they're legit 4 deep on D (meaning all 4 D are real top 4 D) and a rookie phenom in net (yes, an older phenom, but he has been great).
Dallas top line is fun to watch, almost as fun as COL, but they're more phsyical. Jaime Benn is maybe the best "unkmnown" player. Radulov is a wily vet, and Seguin is super skilled. And they have some of the best young D in the league with Heiskanen and Klinberg. I just don't know if they have enough depth. Their 2nd line ZUcc and two youngsters (Hintz and Dickinson) can make or break the series for the Stars. They need production from that line,.
should both be entertaining series.
I'm really high on Columbus. The underdogs often looked like they were just worlds better than their opponent. There wasn't a lot of scraping by.

Hey Tony! Not rooting for your Caps but nice to see you you, pal!
tony, hail to the chief and a great run.
Nice nice win last night and series. Great composure to take their best punch in the first period and not go down for the count. Your team is worthy.
Congrats Jints, so happy for you and for the Canes.
Fuck Ovie. Fuck DC.
I disagree. The Isles have a very localized fanbase within ~10 mile radius of Uniondale.
You don't see any buzz at all here in Manhattan.
When the Rangers are in Raleigh that's one thing, but I expect it to be very small the Isles turnout. The Caps are much closer, and they had hardly any.
He played one year with the Habs and in addition to being good offensively he was immediately a team leader and fan favorite - he wasn't his old self - since he was much older than his QHJHL days where his performance was staggering - - but he was a solid to really good top 6 forward.
Apparently after the 1 year prove it deal the habs wanted to re-sign him - as early as November of that deal (so less than 2 months in), but I guess in one of his mistakes, Bergevin slow-played it and took a hard line and gambled and lost.
Either way, he wasn't making a difference in MTL the past two years, so water under the bridge.
I think wily vet is a fair way to describe him though.

I think you'll be surprised with the split numbers in Raleigh

Thanks for the info PJ.
Wilde and Dobson have had absolute monster years and raised their stock as prospects. Might be on a collision course in the Memorial Cup. On the other hand, Wahlstrom had an awful year at BC so his stock is down (although he's been impressive in limited AHL action).
Bridgeport (Isles AHL affiliate) is in an elimination playoff game tonight. I'll be watching the draft but keeping an eye on the game. Would be fun to keep the kids alive a bit longer.

People said the same things (or similar) when they looked at Brady Tkachuk's freshman year #'s and because he didn't tear up NCAA as an 18-year old some didn't like him.
He had 45 points as a rookie in the NHL. 2nd I think to Petterson who is a draft ahead of him.
Tkachuk is 9 months older than Wahlstrom, it's a big difference and then factor in Wahlstrom is 18 competing with many 21 - 23 year olds on a down year for BC, I wouldn't worry. He's going to be good.

I haven't seen any in the UES.
I don't expect there to be many Isles fans, just like when the Canes have played the Devils in the playoffs not many Devs fans have been.
Refs providing Bruins basically an extra attacker, some brutal penalties called on CBJ, who scored two goals in 13 seconds in the 3rd. both tips.
This is not going to be a long series IMO.

Zach Werenski said on the OT winner last night he thought the Bruins entered offside. It's why he hesitated and that's why he got burned by Charlie Coyle. "In the heat of the moment I did [think they were offside]. I cant worry about that, though. Just gotta keep playing."
Not sure if the goal would have been waived off on review or not, but by calling a penalty, it was not reviwable.
I think a little makeup with the faceoff violation on Staal, I couldn't clearly see his hand touch the puck, but the ref was right there, so who knows.
Goalies the story so far. And Nelson whiffing on two scoring chances.
Scoreless entering the 3rd, Islanders on the PP
no idea how no one sees that
Double minor.
I don't think I've ever seen a penalty called when the refs didn't see the penalty.
WTF?
Carolina...another OT to follow the Double OT from Wednesday. They must LOVE this:). See how those legs hold up as the period goes on...
Canes leading a charmed life right now.

I don't hate them. I hated Brind'amour when he played, and I think Hamilton is a really weird (from some of the stuff I've heard about him off ice) but I don't care who wins this series.
I have one friend who grew up a Whalers fan (I grew up in CT) that remained a Hurricanes fan. One. Not that many of my friends were actually Whalers fans, but some were. And 1 stayed a Hurricanes fan. For his sake I like to see them do well, but I'm just rooting for good games and tonight delivered.
I don't think we'll see a defensive struggle/goalie duel.
too much offense.
Go Avs!!!:)
Double minor.
I don't think I've ever seen a penalty called when the refs didn't see the penalty.
WTF?
It happened just Tuesday night on the 5 minute major against Vegas. A penalty wasn't called during the play. Only after Pavelski lay on the ice bleeding.

I thought they had a penalty on that, but changed it to a major. Either way, I think it's rare.
Isles had over 55% of XG, so hard to lose they one. Need a strong effort on Sunday.
The Barclays situation is a complete disaster. My friend took a train thats left before 6, it had a huge delay (because lirr has shit westbound on rush hour service) and he doesnt get to the game until almost the second period. Also said that somehow they was still a long security line at Barclays even though the game was well under way. What a joke.
4 min into the 3rd.
Main event (no offense to Blues or Stars fans) tonight, BOS vs CBJ game two.

That place sucks ass. The arena sucks. Peoples heads are in the way in like 80% of the place and then all the other obstructed views. LIRR only opens the 1st 4 cars when you get there and most of the time people dont realize and youre stuck in the train for 10 mins. I had said Id never go back after last year but I had to go last night but I am now back on the not going. Even if they somehow surprisingly make the finals, Ill watch on TV
B's up 1 - 0.
They're manhandling the BJ's. Columbus looks a little timid.
I know sometimes guys shine in the playoffs and then they peak, and you don't hear much from them.
But Hintz is making himself into a household name.
people knew about Heiskanen who was great too, but Hintz is surprising some people.
I think it's Pettersson in a landslide, mostly because Binnington - while his #'s are ridiculous, didn't play enough.
Lays some hits, and Panarin scores on the PP.
he's been great in the playoffs.
Bruins now on a 3 min PP, due to double minor high stick
Such a good game so far.
hard hitting, solid goalies for the most part, good chances both ways now that CBJ got over the jitters (or withstood the Bruins initial attack
BJ's gave one away, but deBrusk passed instead of taking the point blank shot.
17 seconds left in the 3rd.
as a fan of neither team you have to love this.

And just like that. Series is 1 1
great game.
Best game of the playoffs.
Breadman was impressive tonight
but something people sometimes don't realize is hitting that much takes it's toll physically (on the hitters) and fatigue impact you even more.
If you're going to play that style you need to get a big lead before you tire out.
It appears the Bruins did not.
Last game was a 1 - 0 OT win for the canes, goalie duel/defensive battle. Hope for some more open play.
And tonight, SJS looking to go up 2 - 1 on the Avs at the fish tank.
Here is hoping for an 8th straight day of playoff hockey OT.
I think Cooper wins. Tortz or Berube probably deserve it more, but when you have the best regular season in a couple decades I have no issue with you winning the award.
Canes going to with 5 D, that's a big loss.
My vote: Crosby
Who will win: Kucherov
But McElhinney in, and forced to make some good saves immediately.
2 goals in the first 70 seconds of the 3rd.
McElhinney shuts the door. 2- 1 Canes still with just over 10.
Isles headed to the PP, on a puck over glass penalty.
Alright Hamilton
like game 1, a defensive struggle for the most part.
There is just not a lot of room on this ice.
CBJ vs BOS off as the series moves to CBJ.
Tonight one game, STL @ DAL in a pivotal game 3.
Thought this was funny from twitter:
Brian Higgins
@BrianHiggins17
This is why the Islanders have no business winning a Cup. This guy - all by himself. Sushi at a hockey game FOH. @Morning_Skate
He lamented that his team needed more roster depth.
LOL.
The Hurricanes have Greg McKegg taking 3rd period defensive zone face offs, and Brock McGinn and Nino Neiderreiter as top 6 forwards - not to mention their injuries issues, but Babcock lost in the 1st round...again...because his roster lacks depth.
Ok.
I also think it's a bit unfair - if they won, they'd probably be the Cup favorites. It was a 7 game series where they outplayed the Bruins in game 7. It's not like they got smoked.
Bruins BJ's game 3 tonight in Columbus.
Pastrnak is getting absolutely torched by local Boston media and then it leaks out his thumb injury impacts his shooting and passing. There's always an injury. Bergeron is reportedly injured too. Not sure I believe, but both have been playoff no-shows compared to their regular season plays and history. I like McAvoy too, but he seems to be head hunting a little and I think some of it is he feels like he needs to compensate for Chara, but otherwise no clue.
Hoping BJ's can grab this series by the balls and put a stake in the Bruins hearts.
SJS vs Avs game 3 tonight too. Also fun series.
I'll need to DVR the game since I have my own playoff game, so those of you waiting with bated breath to see my updates will need to wait, my apologies. LOL.

Normally I'd say no, it doesn't warrant a suspension, but Marhand's history is probably worse than Kadri and he wound up getting 5 games.
We'll see how things hold up, but NBC is doing just fine TV ratings wise this playoffs, highest in 7 years.
Seems like NHL fans are sick of the same old teams and are embracing the new blood. Hopefully NBC catches the hint and put out a more diverse national schedule next year.

I wonder if it had anything to do with Yzerman.
Ferland, remains a mystery.
I'm not.
LOLIsles. Gonna be a tough climb getting back from 0-3.
Don't be disingenuous, Anak.
I sure as hell am not sorry, and you aren't either.
I'm not going to grave dance (although it's not over yet by any stretch) but fake sympathy is lousy.
I don't think it happens here, but it's not like they're getting blown out.
This team has given me too much fun this year to throw in the towel so Ill move plans around Friday night to watch despite things not looking great.

Agreed
Stars dominating, up 3 end of 2. Looking to even the series up at 2.
Put Dal Colle in too while you are at it.
I really underrated their D coming into the series. Complete ignorance on my part. Talented and deep group. I think Isles underrated D holds up against them well going forward (especially when super-prospect Dobson comes up) but lack of finishing skill in the forwards is a significant gap. Wouldn't be shocked if Isles deal Leddy this offseason for help up-front.
Carolina is no fluke and looks to be entering into a pretty long window. IMO, this won't be the last time NYI/CAR face off in the playoffs.
They've been analytics darlings for a while, and now it's coming together. They could win it all, especially now that they're getting healthy up front. Carolina/CBJ would be a fascinating series if it plays out that way
Agree, my brief comment on Slavin from earlier:
pjcas18 : 4/24/2019 11:19 pm : link : reply
is so solid.
He reminds me of Roman Josi. People argued with me when I said Josi was the best D on NSH. As much as I love Subban, Josi is better.
Slavin and the D core there probably shows why CAR was confident in dealing Hanifin (even though they acquired Hamilton). They have a good you D group, and I think they even lost TVR for the series.
Not that it should matter, but there are reports that he's a really weird dude. Just from a chemistry standpoint doesn't hang out with the other players.
Some unconfirmed reports are he asked out of Boston because they refused to sign his brother (to I think a minor league contract).
I think he fits in well in CAR, because there are some quirky personalities there too, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him moved again. Even this off-season.
And the "scared of Ovi" move would turn me off of him as a fan and teammate. Not just from a toughness standpoint, but that led to a goal.
isles a will be hamstrung until they can finally find an 'elite goal scorer'. top 6 (lee + eberle especially) have looked so sloppy and lifeless this series. Complete 180 from the from the first series, have to wonder how much the 10 day lay off hurt them.
This whole series is great so far. Blue Jackets need to squeeze the life out of the Bruins. If the Bruins win this game and tie the series heading back to Boston, they're going to win the series and no one wants that.
We could be looking at a couple game 7's.
Let's see if the Islanders have some balls tonight and can extend the series another game at least.
Stars Blues after Isles Canes. Stars Blues is tied 2-2
3 out of 4 series are 2 - 2 after 4.
Forwards:
Gaudreau
Eichel
Kane
DeBrincat (you want a Cole Caufield comp - this is it)
Clayton Keller
Kreider
Larkin
Colin White
Frank Vatrano
JVR
Glendening
Derek Ryan
Jack Hughes
Defense:
Ryan Suter
Noah Hanifin
Alec Martinez
Brady Skjei
Quinn Hughes
Christian Wolanin
Adam Fox
Goalies:
Cory Schneider
Cayden Primeau (Keith's son, Northeastern alum, habs prospect)
Thatcher Demko
I think it's better than last year. Kreider and Larkin skated well together last year I wonder if they keep them together.
Normally I look at the US roster and then at Canada and I say F-it, US can't win, but not really this year.
Canada:
Forwards:
Tavares
Couturier
Henrique
Dylan Strome
Turris
Matthew Joseph
Reinhart
Mantha
Bertuzzi
McCann
Cirelli
Marchessault
D
Chabot
Montour
Severson
Nurse
Theodore
Fabbro
Stecher
G
Carter Hart
Matt Murray
Blackwood
So, on paper Canada is probably deeper and better in net, but overall beatable.
Russia good too
I haven't seen their final roster - only in Russian, but I know they have Kovalchuk, Ovie, Kucherov, Kuznetzov, probably Datsyuk (and Rangers prospects Karvstov and Shestyorkin)
Should be some good hockey
Also surprised no Kessel or Pacioretty.
I wish Byfuglien, Jones, and Werenski were there too.
Agree 100% on the Olympics - it's a travesty we don't get to see these players compete for their countries, this would be like 1996 World Cup of hockey all over.
though I do think 1996 US talent vs 2019 US talent would be a hell of a matchup.
That 1996 team had:
Hull
Modano
Tkachuk
Weight
Lafontaine
LeClair
Amonte
Guerin
Otto
that's a heavy forward group (off the top of my head, I may be leaving off a few)
but the strength was D and in net:
Leetch
Chelios
Housley
The Hatchers
Suter
Schneider
goalies:
Richter
Hebert and maybe Carey
that US vs Canada final is some of the best hockey I've ever seen.
that Canada team was ridiculous - it's like a HOFers game:
Gretzky
Messier
Yzerman
Sakic
Shanahan
Verbeek
Lindros
Linden
Fleury
Primeau
Graves
Brind'Amour
Damphousse
holy shit
and on D:
Coffey
Stevens
Neidermeyer
Foote
Blake
and more
in net
Brodeur
CuJo
and someone else
Not going to lie, sometimes on rainy days I watch that three game series final.
Bruins?
Celtics?
Or even?
Bruins?
Celtics?
Or even?
Hard to say. As a Bruins hater but a Celtics fan I enjoy the Celtics winning, but I don't give them much chance this year, where I think the Bruins are cup favorites. So I'd say for that reason (because they can win it all) Bruins fever is more right now, but this city definitely loves the Celtics and are not fair weather by any stretch.
This will be an interesting off-season for Ainge (not that I'm giving up, but even if somehow the C's win the East, don't see them winning it all).
Some of my friends talking about not bothering tonight and will check in on Sunday if we win. I don't get that. This is the Islanders. While I believe there's very strong reasons to be extremely bullish looking forward, we go decades without making the second round and these games shouldn't be taken for granted.
Anyway, LGI. Canes are going to be tough in their building with a chance to sweep and all of the momentum in the world. Looking forward to seeing what type of effort the boys come out with tonight.
The 2nd goal wasn't Lehner's fault, but man he has to find a way to cover that puck. Islanders standing around watching.
Good TO call by Trotz before this gets out of hand.
I have no idea what hockey team you even root for.
But, if you were an Islanders fan and wanted to come over to Rangerstown, I wouldn't blame ya.
I went to the 2014 game 6 vs Montreal so there is that.
At least we got memories of June 1994 with OJ slashing Nicole's throat and all. Allegedly.
I'm glad the Rangers were awful last year. This is how we're finally getting a big time prospect in the draft and how were going to build back up the right way.
Couple more years and this is going to be a really good hockey team.
"2024 Stanley Cup champions!"
What I do know is that the Rangers weren't getting anywhere trying to keep milking a playoff run out of the old core with Lundqvist and that this needed to be done.
We are getting much younger, more cost controlled, more talented, and we have a coach who isn't one of the 15 retreads in the league that just go from team to team to team - often with the same limited, fast-expiring shelf-life.
Carolina series announcer was fine but the Dallas/STL announcer last night (former Olympic gold for us women's team) was a very tough listen.

Yeah, Kendall Coyne is fine, AJ Mleczko (also a gold medalist but on the 1998 team) is terrible.
and I love the fact they're looking for ways to get women involved, I mean I coach a pee-wee girls team, but AJ is not helping the cause. Kendall is.
I think they'll figure it out at some point, quality means more than quantity.
These announcers have been doing this for a very long time and it makes you appreciate I guess how good they are.
But yeah, who was the one for the Dallas/St. Louis game? She was unbearably bad and her inexperience showed anytime words came out of her mouth. I never ever am like this but I had to mute her because it sounds as if I was listening this woman cover a high school boys game. Hopefully she gets better.

Yes. I was thinking that the last two games, one is ok, but I mean this just feels forced, and shes awful.

Kendall Coyne did the Stars-Blues game last night. She sounded like she was 10 years old and definitely does not have an announcer's voice. I have not heard AJ yet so I don't know how she is. I applaud them trying to get women into the booth but Kendall just doesn't have the voice for it in my opinion.
I fear this series and the Eastern conference, is over.
I fear this series and the Eastern conference, is over.
Doesn't look good for CBJ, but CAR is going to be a tough test for Boston.
going to be a great ending.
If I were a Bruins fan I'd be livid. I never saw the puck cross the goal line. I think I thought it crossed the line, but sorry that's not good enough.
Bruins destined to win the cup this year, to add to the Patriots and Red Sox and make my life more miserable.
But i do respect his passion. He clearly loves the game.
All for giving women a shot - not sure it should be now versus regular season, seems like pandering - and hopefully they get last nights Blues/stars announcer some training before putting her out there again (I'm guessing she filled in for Eddie O who is at derby?)... but next time please replace Millbury instead of hard working announcers. Man is he a crusty douche.
This league is so lost
I like Kendall Coyne and maybe it's just because the women's gold medal Olympic game vs Canada is a top 15 hockey game I've ever seen or b/c she's just slightly slower than McDavid, but I can listen to her despite the flaws b/c of her on-ice skills. Sort of like how I can listen to Arod in the booth in baseball.
I could see how people who don't know her or of her don't want to hear her.
AJ is awful with the English language and does not add much in game insight IMO. She fumbles over words, uses words incorrectly and adds nothing. She, and I hate to say it because it will seem sexist, was better suited at interviewing players in between periods.
Someone said it before, not everyone can do color or in-game analysis. and I don't think it's a sexist criticism - I hate when Garry Galley does Canadiens games on TSN - the guy is terrible (though he's getting better)
Kendall Coyne for me in the booth = ok
AJ mleczko in the booth = no bueno
And I'd pay to see Kendall in next year's all-star game fastest skater competition.

You've been saying this for weeks, I just don't see it...they're having an awfully hard time in the 1st time 2 rounds, just because they have the most points doesn't mean they are the default.

They had the hardest road to get where they are. Toronto was the toughest 1st round matchup for a 2 seed, and CBJ is/was on fire.
they are winning without their best players playing well, and that began to change the past couple games.
Bergeron and Pastrnak are scoring now. Marchand has been consistently good, the only one of the big 3. Krejci not even playing that well yet either.
They are by far the favorites right now.
Under 5 left in the 2nd
Bihsop out, I think he's hurt. Looked like a collar bone maybe.
I fear this series and the Eastern conference, is over.
hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Two game 6's tomorrow.
I'll be on a plane for much of it to the West coast, hopefully DirecTV on JetBlue has NBC Sports. I don't think it does.
I won't paste anything b/c it's behind a paywall, but Hughes by far his top prospect. Projects as an AS caliber center.
Kakko good comments. only negative is he pitchforks too much, I didn't notice, but I think Ovi did too when he was young.
Podkolzin DROPS WAY down to late teens for him.
Top 10 he has 5 Americans, 4 Canadians, and Kakko (Fin)
Top 100 he has 32 Canadians, 28 Americans, 12 Fins, 13 Russians, 10 Swedes, and various other counties with 1.
First round (top 31) he has 10 Canadians, 9 Americans, 5 Fins, 3 Swedes, 2 Russians, 1 Slovak (Maxim Cajkovic - guy I said was a sleeper months ago).
I'd pencil Boston in for the SCF as well but I'd love nothing more than to be wrong.
Probably San Jose wins and it goes to OT.
Fucking tired of Boston and especially San Jose for the last 10 years or so.

Route 9, Sharks have only been the the cup finals once, why the hate? Personally, I am intrigued by them and think DeBoer is a damn good coach.
Sort of the same way with the 2010 Falcons, only to get clobbered by Green Bay. or those Colts teams who would get tossed out in Peyton's early years. 90s Atlanta's teams? McNabb lead Eagles?
I understand the meaning that it is the media's job to hype up all these teams and these do have a top record but they just irritate me with all of their lack of performances.
I dont hate the Sharks actually, but I do hate Matt Ryan for reasons that I don't feel like mentioning.
I just want game 7s and 3OTs into that spring night. That is all I want.

Thinking about betting $1000 on the bruins for the series to take some of the sting out of the cost of the SCF home game 2 that I bought for my youngest.
Bruins cup favorites at 1.5:1
Might bet the AVs for the cup. 11:1 I think
No idea how that wasn't a major. Game changing missed call.
I don't think he has a history of any type so 1-game probably right.
I'll have to find the article or tweet or whatever.
They must have been musing on this a while back.
Now that Yzerman is off the table, I'd love to bring JD home.
Yeah Zucc. Help us get a first round pick.
I thought it was an unassisted goal. 😜
@PierreVLeBrun
Impact of Carolinas dream season: a year ago at this time, the Canes had sold $500k in new ticket business for the following season. A source says as of yesterday, the Canes had sold $3.6 M in new tix business for next season. Not renewals. New business. That is something.

Hey Brett - looks like we evened out.
Until next season...
The Niederreiter for Rask trade on January 17th was the final piece that was missing for the turn around to really get started. He needed a change of scenery and it was a long shot but it worked.
He fit in quickly, looked refreshed and was the spark IMO.

No goal
Ruining the game on meaningless impacts.
Ruining the game on meaningless impacts.
I mean, should they just ignore the rule? I agree it slows things down but I prefer getting the call right to getting it fast.
Look, a slow change has no impact on a goal. You know how many times a team could be called for too many men on the ice in a game? You know how many times there is goalie interference that gets reviewed but not called?
Yet, we regularly see offsides called retroactively with a determination made on if a skate blade was millimeters too far.
It would be like reviewing a jump shot and calling it off because the coach had part of his loafer on the court.

Hockey has taken serious steps back because of the offsides replay idea, IMO. If it wasnt called on the ice, then obviously it isnt clear enough to impact the players perception of the play. Its not like a defenseman stops because the forward has his skate offsides by millimeters. I 1000% agree with you, Fats.
it's stupid. And no, don't ignore the offsides rule in hockey, but my contention all along has been it's a game played by humans, and officiated by humans, they are going to miss calls. they've missed calls for over a hundred years, and they'll miss more. get rid of the offsides review.
On that play last night, if that player is considered offsides then it had to be a too many men on the ice penalty.
it's like the goalie interference reviews, which I get, but if it's goalie interference, shouldn't it be a penalty?
Other industries invest in technology and constantly have to raise the bar around automation to survive... yet sports leagues stubbornly refuse to adapt.
But hey, lets challenge an Avalanche game tying Game 7 goal because a player well away from the puck was a touch slow to his bench on video review... but a ref keeps a puck in the zone on a PP and no problem, play on.
ADAPT. EVOLVE.

for the cup IMO.
I went 3 for 8 in the 1st round (BOS, SJS, and DAL) so don't call me out for my picks, I'm probably not going to be right.
I don't think CBJ will be able to handle the physical game Boston will bring. They're not TOR soft, but they have quite a few finesse guys.
So BOS > TOR (CBJ obviously)
I think STL vs DAL will be a phenomenal series. If DAL top line plays like they did against NSH they could win. I think their depth hurts and Binnington continues to lead a charmed life.
STL > DAL
CAR vs NYI is anyone's guess. I like CAR's youth, if they get Svechnikov and Ferland back I like their chances more. If not, it will be tough. In a toss up...
CAR > NYI
COL is the most fun team to watch in hockey, and the Sharks you can say are the most experienced, I'm taking experience.
SJS > COL
I Pick BOS and STL for the cup, with the B's winning, might sweep.
this series is over.
Canes just over matched.
FUCK EVERYTHING BOSTON
Not really Bruins overachieving. They had the 2nd best record in the East.
I think they were legit cup contenders
Quinnipiac alum, Connor Clifton, with the 3rd Bruins goal, and they almost followed up with the 4th.
hockey is a game of momentum, Canes look like they stayed in the locker room.

Fair enough. They caught a huge break when TB and WAS got knocked out, though (as Boston teams usually do). I mean, Zdeno Chara can barely skate and yet they still get away with running him out there, and I don't think I could name anyone on their roster aside from him, Bergeron, Pastrnak, and Marchand. Probably just my bitterness, but I definitely get a 2013 Red Sox vibe from them, a bunch of random players having career years all at the same time and winning it all, then fading back to the middle of the pack.

No way. Not unexpected at all with this Bruins team.
Marchad, Pastrnak and Bergeron is the best line in the league.
Krejci, deBrusk, Backes, could be a 1st line on some teams.
Marjo, Coyle, and Heinen a legit scoring 3rd line and their 4th line of Nordstrom, Kuraly and Wagner is a prototypical 4th line.
Chara is the weak link on D, but he's still got usefulness, hard shot, long stick, veteran savvy. but their other D are all top 4 caliber. McAvoy a future Norris candidate IMO, Carlo suffered injuries, but now his career on track he's legit top 4 and Krug and Grezlyck are the prototype of puck moving D even if I am not a fan of the finesse style.
Clifton is the 7th D, they lost Miller to injury, but he may be back for the finals.
The biggest question to the Bruins winning a cup has been Rask and he's as focused as any goalie I've seen in the playoffs since ironically Tim Thomas.
Bruins have all the makings of a cup winner IMO.
Unfortunately.
if the Canes can't muster any momentum down the stretch here their only slim chance is a sweep in Raleigh and I doubt that happens.
Safe to say Canes are embarrassed.
Lol, i think that's the definition of a post that didn't age well
Sweep
THAT'S NOT A PENALTY KILL IT'S A PENALTY MASSACRE
I'd have Slavin or a forward before Hamilton.
Tim Thomas.
But I was gonna let this slide - Williams took a few shots at Backes's head while he was down on the ice earlier after the no goal. No calls there.
If Boston can get out of this period 0-0, they're winning.
And NBC is acting like its because the Canes are so good.
I hate him as much as I hated Cole Beasley.
Just seems like a fucking annoying douche bag.
If I'm the Canes I'd accept that trade if it's even up.
CAR is toast.

Hand pass?
Not if the sharks are in their hotel rooms right about now
the hand pass is not reviewable. the goal was fine.
case in point: losers sticking up for refs after they blew the call for St Louis Rams - New Orleans Saints this year
looking forward to game 4.
Sharks are an easier matchup for BOS IMO, so hoping for STL, but doesn't seem likely now.

I'd like to have StL win but am fine with SJ because I thought it was them who may do better against BOS.
Please, NO BOS.
Makes perfect sense.
agree with this, I think none of it should be reviewable.
it's a game played by humans refereed by humans, as long as you can confirm people are not biased or corrupt I'd live with that.
Quote:
can't be reviewing whether a guy is an inch offsides not impacting the play at all, but a playoff game is lost because we won't review a hand pass. 5 minute head shot penalties, puck over the glass, either review it all or none of it and live with the consequences but this half ass stuff is awful

Dangerous play that does/could result in injury should be reviewable by the league post-game; just making sure that isn;t also thrown out.

absolutely, people should be accountable for actions that get missed - especially related to player safety, I don't really consider that "review", I was referring just to in-game play.
Though my thoughts on concussions and NHL players is changing greatly by the day during these playoffs with the players behavior.
Great post Kyle and I agree 100%. The NHL needs to fix this.
If deliberate handling, passing, using the hand to cause the puck to enter the goal??, it's closer to hall hockey.
For the rest of it, Kyle's and the FatMan's takes are spot on.
I tend to agree. What's the big deal? It's allowed in the defensive zone
Quote:
.

disagree. using your hand to direct the puck to a teammate or to give your team an advantage should not be allowed. It's not now, nor has it ever been part of the game (as far as I know) Probably even in the defensive end it shouldn't be allowed.
However, obviously in the defensive end it's allowed, and I can live with that, because it's not creating an offensive advantage.
just my opinion.
maybe they should get rid of sticks and use curling brushes.
they can make a lot of changes, but sometimes changing rules for the sake of changing rules doesn't improve the game.
Like I said I don't like the legal hand pass at all in any zone. In the defensive zone I get why they changed the rule, in the offensive zone those same principles do not apply I see no benefit to the game by allowing offensive zone hand passes.
I'm also a fan of eliminating the kicking the puck in the net rule. I go back and forth on eliminating deflections above the cross bar as well.
Kicking rule I can take or leave, the intent of hockey has always been to shoot the puck into the net, I like that deflections are allowed, that either takes balls or luck, but I don't think kicking the puck in the net is in the spirit of the game, but i wouldn't get worked up about that.
hand pass is different to me. I think they already allow too much latitude on the closed hand on the puck when players catch the puck and drop it to their stick, so to be able to catch the puck and basically throw it over to a teammate again, not in the spirit of the game.
I don't mind rule changes, I love 3v3 OT, I like no touch icing, I just don't see how those changes you suggest improve the game. they just change it.
you want a good change (besides eliminating reviews) no more icing when short handed. It's already in youth hockey (recent rule change) and I thought I'd hate but I love how it forces the kids to be creative to get the puck out of the zone.
I agree with the icings on PKs.
Just say the player has to intend to kick the puck into the net for the goal to not count. If he's trying to kick in general, i.e. the Devon Toews non goal in the Carolina series, it should be allowed.

I think that's where you get into the whole judgment area.
I agree with Brett in that regard, the goal should remove most judgment from calls.
kicking motion is a kicking motion (even though there is some debate on that), intent is pure judgment which I think should be avoided.
It's already a judgment call as it is. Refs are determining a "distinct kicking motion," which involves determining whether or not the foot/leg was just in motion or whether or not it was making aim at the puck. So that element is already at play -- might as well at least let the refs make a judgment that can yield a more accurate and fair assessment.

I mean that's fair. See, that's the thing - speculation is ridiculous in a game as random and chaotic as hockey. Who really knows what WOULD have happened in ANY instance, you know?

Yes and no.
a kicking motion is not subjective. It's black and white, either you used a kicking motion or you didn't, but I agree the interpretation of it is subjective. it shouldn't be though. I don't think you should be able to kick a goal in.
Think of it from a defense or goalie standpoint? Your job is to cover the guy in front of the net and lift his stick or make sure he can't get a stick on the puck, if he can just kick it in the net it makes it a different job.
guys will be working on new ways to kick pucks that are deceptive and hard to save. How long before players learn to kick the puck bar down or at least go top shelf. Again, not the spirit of the game. IMO.
the number of kicking motion goals they get wrong is minuscule IMO, focus on the bigger problems like offsides and goalie interference reviews. Almost like you can't even celebrate a goal anymore.
The jerk thing is weird lol why? "Hey honey remember that time in 2019 when our Hurricanes went to the playoffs to be only swept by the Boston Bruins in the ECF?"
whatever I did to deserve this I'm sorry. I'll give up booze for a week or two, kind of like my own personal mini-lent as repentance for my sins. ok, maybe not a full two weeks, but for some period of time. I need salvation. This is serious.

I think it will depend on how much Mrazek is going to ask for and hopefully nobody offers him a lot of money. He was a steal at 1.5 million this year. I also think that Mrazek benefited from the game on and game off system the Canes ran.
He got hurt during his first real game stretch. That is concerning. Having CMac back may be in the cards unless they are completely sold on Nedeljkovic being able to play 30+ games IMO.
They are also still 16 million under the current season cap and it will go up a bit next season. So even with the free agents they have. There will be money to spend if the decide to fill some holes.
Edmonton made the playoffs and had some success a "year too early" and really raised expectations.
the past two years have been a disaster. With the best player in the league.
See what happens next year and I'll believe in CAR.

They'd need to shed some contracts to make that happen (to either team).

I don't blame them. Why would you?
New York sports has been a complete joke recently.
Giants have been an abomination since 2012, the Yankees have won once in 20 years, Rangers are a month away from throwing another anniversary parade because of 1994. Knicks are another laughing joke on a 40 year rebuild/championship hunt.
the Giants win 2 Super Bowls and are - never to be seen or heard from again or even el here sniff the playoffs. What happened when NE lost to New England? Oh? They just get right back to the Super Bowl and win. Not disappear and have a league record low of wins during a 7-8 year rebuild stretch. So sorry, just venting.
I wish we could palimpsest New York sports history. Defintion of joke - New York sports.
but these Blues have some solid D themselves and lead 1 - 0.
It all starts with the faceoff. How many times do you hear that in hockey? Especially offensive zone PP goals.

I thought I read a stat that said historically any team who has swept the conference finals has lost in the SCF.
But those stats are probably SSS, and unfortunately, no, I don't see any team beating the Bruins. Of course it's possible, it's hockey, but right now Rask is playing at SC championship level, they're getting scoring from 4 lines (I think I read 19 different players from the Bruins have scored these playoffs) and their PP is dominant.
it will be a long shot for anyone to beat them IMO.

MIGHT the potential long lay off hurt them?
In your view, if they played Tampa instead of Columbus who wins..
But that's hockey. I don't think the layoff hurts the Bruins.
Today, pivotal game 5, in SJ in a series tied 2 - 2.
I guess maybe STL has a better shot to beat BOS, but both would be heavy underdogs, IMO.
Sharks team has thrown in the towel.
So, hopefully they close it out but not before giving us another game 7.
fatigue is not a factor IMO at this point.
these guys know the season has at most 9 games left.
STL D is better defensive, Parayko is a beast, and Pietrangelo, Bouwmeeester, Edmunson, all solid stay at home D with shots, but the Blues 4th line put up major points yesterday, 4th line scoring in the playoffs can be a difference maker
Gut check time. As soon as I posted how good Karlsson looked he reinjured himself. Sorry Sharks fans. mea culpa.
Tough road for SJS now in the battle for sacrificial lamb to the loathsome Bruins and el-nose face licker.

Berube on Sharks' injuries: "We're not going to change the way we have to take this game and how we have to play it and the urgency we need and the desperation that we need in the game. It doesn't matter who is in the lineup for them, they're going to be a desperate hungry team."
Little known (?) fact?
Blue have been to the finals three time and haven't won a game.
this was back when their "division" was all "expansion" teams so the Blues beat the North Stars and Penguins to get there, while the Bruins beat the Blackhawks and Rangers.
Different era.
None of the games in 1970 were close except the 4th and final game the Bruins won in OT.
and that OT goal made this wildly overplayed image so popular (Bobby Orr "the flight" OT stanley cup winning goal):

Calling Gloria!!!!! Gloria....
Hockey has some great traditions. The Gloria phenomenon in STL is not one of them. Neither is the Ric Flair "wooo" after announcing a Bruins goal. Not looking forward to either this SCF, but if I had to pick I wouldn't mind hearing Gloria another 4 times this spring.
Several Blues were watching the Eagles-Bears playoff game in a Philly bar when Gloria played after the Eagles won that game.
They saw people dancing and loved it. I guess they ignored the people fighting in the corner and the guy eating horse shit...

I read about the backstory when I heard it a few times in the playoffs, and wondered WTF? Reminded me of slapshot a little - the song is about that old. it's about as shitty a sports tradition as Sweet Caroline at Fenway.
but like I said, I hope to be annoyed 4 more times.
I think that's the difference.
The Bruins do not.
I think the Bruins win the series, and I don't think it will be particularly close, but I wouldn't be shocked if STL wins a game. Odds of a sweep are probably high.

Blue need to *play* perfect games to win....
I hope I'm wrong and they win the series - wouldn't be the first, no moral victories though. Any Bruins cup win is a sickening event.
St. Louis doesn't have the elite top line, they do it more by committee, although Tarasenko is starting to get hot.
Blues really dominated the end of the conference finals and that series could have been over in 5 if not for some horrible officiating.
I'm really intrigued by this matchup, should be a good Final.
He's your prototypical sniper.
To me the bigger matchup with by Ryan O'Reilly. Does he matchup vs Bergeron.
ROR is a lot like Bergeron (lite), I'm looking forward to seeing how the coaches approach those two.
The key to me though is the Bruins have been getting scoring from everywhere. I think I read 19 or 20 players have scored for the Bruins this playoffs only Brandon Carlo, Carson Kuhlman (6 games) John Moore (5 games) didn't score a goal. So even if you shut down Bergeron, Pastrnak and Machand, doesn't guarantee you anything.
And Tuukka has been lights out.
The one thing I look at that gives me hope for a Bruins loss is over confidence. They beat the 5, 7, and 8 seeds in the East to get here.
Not sure that's ever happened before (the 3 seed in the Atlantic and the two WC's). Has anyone ever had an "easier" path to the finals?
He's your prototypical sniper....
Before I read down to your last, pj, I was going to comment along the lines of the eliminations to get to these finalists were weird, Jets and Calgary going out. Dallas (sniff), Vegas. Playoff hockey, I guess.

With 8 days to go, here's the current list of previously drafted players who must be signed to an Entry Level contract by June 1st at 5pm ET by their respective clubs.
If unsigned by the June 1st deadline, the drafting club will lose their signing rights to these players.
Hoping for an upset and the Blues winning.
Stealing home ice tonight would be a major step in doing that. Maybe catch the Bruins rusty from their layoff.
How much informed by a large quotient of Yankees' fans who are Rangers' fans (not a Yankees' fan here 'cept for '96 - 00)?
How much informed by a large quotient of anti-Boston ANYTHING esp. due to the Patriots.
How much informed by the inexplicable trades between the Rangers & Bruins in the '70s, Espo, Park, Ratelle, etc., not to mention Middleton for Hodge, which bothered me a lot!
That was an era, before I set off for Africa and the Canaries on my MC, when I had season tix and it was the Rangers' glory years, which happened to coincide with an even better glory story for the Orr-led Bruins. But if I recall, it was the Black Hawks who had NYR number even more than the Bruins in the early '70s in SCP.
But, since '71-'72 how much, direct Bruins-Rangers angst, not so much? My hunch is the Yanks.
Scorers in that OT game 4: Red Berenson, Gary Sabourin, Larry Keenan!!
Rick Smith, Espo, Johnny Bucyk, and Orr
Bucyk was a stellar name in Bruins' history, amazing holdover from the '50s and '60s pre-expansion
For those who care to and/or remember that era, take a look at the many fossils who inhabited that Blues' roster. This SCP Finals was a NC from the very start.

I still didn't see a replay of it. Doc said it was the right call. Does he ever not say it's the right call?
I expected the road team, the underdog, maybe a little jitters.
Better hope Boston doesn't shake the rust off, because if they keep going to the box though, things could change quickly.
I talk about team D a lot, Columbus, Nashville, but man those Blues D's are like trees.
They're all 6' 3" or bigger, and seem good with the puck, meanwhile Bruins trot out McAvoy, Clifton, Grzelcyk, Krug, all under 6 feet. Only Carlo and Chara that tall.
Those penalty kills were fire. St louis needs to ice that fucking puck though. Fuck Boston.

Amen.
Quinnipiac alum.
I think it was tipped
outshooting Blues 15 - 3 in the 2nd.
Blues need to regroup and cone out like it's tied, not like they're getting steamrolled.
this is as close as the Blues will get all series.
Felt similar with the way the Bruins tilted the ice tremendously once they got down. Just like LA did to us.
So another blown two goal lead with a horrendous missed goalie interference coming in game 2?
It was as bad a two-period beat down as I've seen in a long time. Binnington kept it respectable.
My wife is pissed, I bought tickets to home game 2, I'm traveling home to Boston from NYC so she had to bring my daughter to this game.
oh well, I don't feel bad, she's at least a Bruins fan, I am not.
so predictable it's almost boring.
so predictable it's almost boring.
Just like watching the Sox or the Pats. You already know the outcome, it's just a matter of how the Boston opponent is going to screw themselves at a critical juncture.
tie it up, they're controlling he 5v5 play, need to stay out of the box
Bruins answer back. Looked soft, like the 1st one
Blues showing some balls
this is bullshit.
Gryzleck still out
I really hope Boston doesn't win.
In 5v5 I have barely noticed Bergeron all game, Marchand has been a turnover machine and Pasta has been so bad he was benched for Backes.
Bruins down to 5 D and two of them are Chara and Clifton (who has been playing well, but is a rookie).
We have a series.
I wonder if he has a concussion (my guess is he does).
Blues won period 1 game 1, and 2/3 & OT game 2.
Bruins won 2&3 game 1 and 1 game 2.
Bruins won't be rattled by the STL crowd, but still waiting for the team who puts together a solid 3 periods
I think the penalty was even borderline.
Players need to bear some responsibility for the position/movement of their body.

Bruce Cassidy told reporters today that Matt Grzelcyk is in the concussion protocol and won't travel with the Bruins to St. Louis:
lol, you did, right as I was reminding you that Rasmus Dahlin the latest wire to wire top pick, and Andrei Svechnikov the consensus wire to wire #2 both attended the combine last year.
What did they have to prove?
What does Hughes have to prove?
It likely changes nothing, but it's a bad look to skip it - without a decent reason.

So what? He was in another country, he didn't have any time for a break, he just won his third gold. in a year. He can afford to take some time for himself.

treehouse isn't that far, some of my friends go and wait 2 hours for IPA's. I do not.
though I've heard the wait is a lot less than it used to be.
There is a lot more local New England flavor on the Bruins than just those three (and I used to watch the South Shore Kings practices while my daughter was playing for the Spitfires in Foxborough, they are a great program and I learned a lot about coaching just from watching their practices)
McAvoy (from Long Island) also went to BU
Noel Acciari is from RI
Connor Clifton (from NJ) went to Quinnipiac
and this:
Considering the quality and quantity of local Bruins over the years and also the sustained relevance of the team, which is playing in its 18th finals since 1929, the drought seems almost implausible.
Quote:
A four-year player at Boston University, Grzelcyk has done perhaps the most Bostony thing an athlete can do: He scored the overtime winner in the 2015 Beanpot championship, an annual tournament featuring the citys four top college hockey teams. It happened on the TD Garden ice that Grzelcyks father, John, for 52 years a member of the Bull Gang crew that transitions the arena for various events, had helped set.
and this:
Quote:
Since the 1973-74 campaign, at least one Massachusetts-born player has skated for the Bruins in all but three seasons. And yet a Massachusetts-born player hasnt won the Stanley Cup with the Bruins since Myles Lane in 1929.

Even though I am a Quinnipiac alum I was actually rooting for Yale in that game. I was a Yale fan since birth, my father would drag me to the football games every Saturday during football season from the time I could walk and the Yale Whale (Ingalls rink) was like a 2nd home. My great uncle was the athletic trainer. When the Giants played at Yale Bowl my father was maybe early 20's my uncle got my father a job as an usher so he could watch Giants games for free.
Anyway, yeah, Quinnipiac should have been heavily favored in the title game vs Take, in three prior meetings with Yale Quinnipiac was 3 - 0 and outscored Yale something like 12 - 2 in the three games.
Against North Dakota (a couple years later also in the National title game) Quinnipiac should not and was not favored.
Bruins PP has been lethal.
if the Blues keep spending so much time in the box, they should just start planning to get the duck boats out in Boston.

Well assuming the Blies don't melt down in the last min+ that is
congrats Blues, 1st home win in SCF history
LeBrun: St. Louis Colton Parayko
Pretty hard to pick on a Blues player on this night, but given that the power play struggles continue, Im just going to single out Parayko, but really its the entire unit. Hes at the top of it with the one-timer threat but theres just not enough quick movement on that power play, too stagnant, too slow, too predictable. They might win the Cup despite it, but its tough to watch.
the Canadiens PP coach is Kirk Muller. The Canadiens had the worst PP in the league. Muller coached team Canada at the World Championships and the PP was the best or 2nd best in the tourney.
Sometimes it's talent. Simple as that.
What I think needs to be better for the Blues is the PK. Game 3 especially, they allowed the Bruins easy entry into the zone.
IMO the most successful PK schemes are aggressive at the blue line. Take your chance there and force the play.
And then don't chase in zone. Stay disciplined, but remain active on loose pucks.
Don't let the PP get set up.
it's why you see so many quick PK changes INO.
Anyway, IMO Parayko isn't the guy I'd call out in STL, it's they need their PP1 unit skill guys to be better and they just don't have the same level of skill guys - Berube called out Tarasenko early in the playoffs and IMO he responded. And after Tarasenko and ROR they just don't have a lot of skill. Robert Thomas is a guy who may become that, but right now, he's still reeling from the Krug hit. They're a blue collar team IMO.
No PP QB either. As much as I hate Torey Krug, the guy is built for the modern day PP, where he can skate it into the zone, he can handle the puck, he can pass tape to tape, he can rip a shot, the Blues D activates, but they don't have a Krug back there. They have trees with cannon shots, but not puck movers - maybe why they had Dunn play last night. he's closer to that mold.

I was surprised it was just a 5th. Is this some situation where Hayes is an impending FA or RFA?
You and he are pretty much same page, he as much as said he might as well pick a symptom of the unit.
Grzelcyk still day to day with concussion.
If both remain out it could be the crack of an opening the Blues need. It pushes Kampfer into the rotation and a likely Providence call-up.
Chara isn't very good, but his leadership is meaningful and he plays good PK minutes.
If Grzelcyk returns it's that king of thing when I lose sympathy for CTE issues players have later in life.
You don't recover from a concussion in 4 days and you know he's pushing to come back. I would be, he's probably working on ways to fake out the independent concussion testers.
Without being a concussion expert and a person who usually simply says "I defer to the medical staff" I don't think he should return this series.
We'll see Thursday night. Oh, and I hate the extra day too.
Doubt it, but would love it.
Also heard Karlsson to the Habs - I fear for the team who signs him to a LT contract. Unless it's the Bruins. Then back up the truck for him.
He's trying to be there for his team (not to mention getting to live his dream). You can definitely call it the wrong decision, but to say you don't sympathize for someone is rough.

I would do the exact same thing as him (or what I assume he's trying to do).
My point though is you can't have it both ways. If he is pushing to play like I assume and figuring out ways to "game the system" and not taking consideration for the long-term impact, why should I care 20 years down the road when he has headaches or cognitive issues.
It's not an anti-Bruins thing, but he should probably sit this one out.

Yeah the extra days off annoy the heck out of me. It's just got to be a ploy for better ratings, but come on. They should be playing every other day unless there's an arena conflict. If this series goes 7, there will be 4 extra off days since the series started, and obviously both teams had long layoffs (Boston especially) before the series started.
Chara was not.
THAT would be hockey player tough and as much as I can't stand the guy he'd get major props for gutting it out.
Grzelcyk would be stupid (assuming he's doing what I think and trying to fake his way out of concussion protocol).

can't wait.
Backes out. Takes away some physicality but gives them Kampfer if Chara gets gassed or reinjured.
Bruins going to come out flying. Blues need to withstand the push until the adrenaline wears off.
St. Louis wins tonight and then Boston wins the next two.
Bruins to the PP where they have been lethal
only game 6 in 2011 was in Boston and 7 in Vancouver and this would be the reverse but you're right otherwise.
Great period so far.
Look for a rebound or deflection
You hit the goalie like that when he has the puck it's going to get called.
Beginning to be a theme
need to kill it off or lose momentum
Gracias. I'd love if St. Louis won this. I'm sick of duck boats celebrations & seeing signs like 'End the drought. 103 days without a Boston championship.' I saw that driving through Worcester on my way to Portsmouth last month. STFU Boston.
agree, they have the right plan. Just need to stay out of the box.
Right there with you, pal. STL decided not to be intimidated by BOS and have been delivering as good as they get.
Krug and then Pastrnak. Looking for perfect plays.
Blues just flipping the puck out of the zone now.
That makes it even sweeter
Game 6 is Sunday night, and Game 7 would be the following Wednesday, because the league loves those random extra off days. I am sure this is merely a tease and that the Bruins will win Game 7, because we can't have nice things.
Another very good game, all in all not quite the intensity and constant pressure in one team's end as in Game 4.
The Blues d was driving me crazy almost entire 3rd period: as Bruins began to form attack, the Blues' d-men sagged down/away from their blue line as if to collapse down to protect their net. All that did was allow the Bruins easy entries and set up.
On the other hand, somehow the Blues are very effective behind Tuuka's net: they shovel it in down low--I mutter to myself that's giving it away--and more often than not the forechecking forward comes up with it to hold or dish a centering pass from behind the net. Really good diggers along the boards.
Hughes edged out Kakko for them, but it was close.
USA has 6 of their top 12 (9 of the top 31) with Cam York and Cole Caufield at 11 and 12.
Anakim favorite, the German D Mortiz Seider, makes a significant late jump to #10
top 12 is 6 US, 3 Canadians, 1 Fin, 1 German, and 1 Russian.

I hope he gets a hefty fine. I hope this nauseating complaining is just gamesmanship and not sincere I saw two missed takedowns on blues players in the third period not called too.
Just a thoroughly unlikeable team and stay classy Neely and throw another water bottle at a wall
Really makes one wonder about impartiality and money (eg pull for a game 7) - call wasnt made on the ice and had no bearing on Johansson in game 5 or on the game.

Sundquist suspension, but still don't think gam e7 in the playoffs suspendable.
If so, it pretty much balances Barbashev loss.
Acciari has been a wrecking ball as has Barbashev - 4th line depth will be tested tonight. Edge Bruins IMO, unless they need to dress 7 D again.
Im staying optimistic. Im a bit worried about some make up calls that give the Bruins plenty of pp chances.
Carson Kuhlman also in for Boston, Backes still out. 6 D dressed for the B's.
that remaining $12M over 2 years is going to sit well for this Boston team if they lose one of the next two games.
Robert Thomas back in for STL, not Barbashev by any stretch, in fact he's the complete opposite, but more skill never hurts.
but we all knows that's not going to happen, unfortunately.
He's been "on" all playoffs pretty much
Blues to the PP
Doesn't matter, Blues PP is not good
That. Was. Impossible.
Once they got in Binnington's head should have known the game was over. The Carlo goal isn't really on him, it was a bouncing puck, but I do think his positioning was a little shaky.

I really can't believe O'Reilly, Pietrangelo, and the other vets haven't told him to knock it off by now. Game 6 with a chance to win the cup and he's skating out of his way to jab Bruins players with his stick. I'd be pretty furious if I were a Blues fan seeing that with such a huge opportunity in front of them. Early in the series, sure maybe stir the pot a bit. But not at this point
In the end maybe it doesn't make a difference. Rask was unreal last night, thought the Blues had the far better chances. But I got a bad feeling after seeing that early on. Hopefully Binnington is locked in Wednesday.

He's been doing this throughout the playoffs. Got noticeably in Bishop's way too on a TV timeout in the Dallas series.
I would not be one bit surprised if this was a deliberate tactic by Bergeron and Marchand. Marchand is a wily piece of shit and Bergeron a smart one - probably Bergeron's idea, to use Marchand and then the whole team caught on.
Not that it's an excuse, but they brought up many times, half that Bruins team has a ring, no one on STL does. Only Perron has been to a cup finals (I think - last year with Vegas).
They're probably more worried about lineups, and set plays than dealing with a nut case goalie (and most are head cases in their own way).
But I do agree, Pietrangelo and ROR, Schenn, Schwartz, they have plenty of veterans on STL who should have said something or jumped on the land mine while it was happening.
But I really wanted her to get to see a game so I went with home game 2 (the Bruins lost in OT).
As much as I hate the Bruins it would be a once in a lifetime experience to go to a SCF game 7.
Nosebleeds are 2 grand each right now, and I don't see that coming down.
I'm not an Ortiz fan, though I didn't want to see him get shot obviously.
But if they put him on the jumbo tron before the game or any of that bullshit saying "this is our fucking city" it will be the height of exploitation.
I wouldn't put it past them.
They also said there may be a "Brady" appearance for Game 7. As if they didn't any extra motivation or anything, it's not like it's Game 7 of the Stanley cup finals. I just hope the trend continues with the road team coming out the victor.

David Ortiz Rooting for Bruins, Says They Need to Win It - ( New Window )
I'm hoping for a competitive game, though I guess I prefer St. Louis to win because they've never won it all before.
As for using Ortiz as some prop...really? Come on. That'd be pretty low from the Bruins organization.
Yeah, reminds me of Arnold with Wilt and Andre:
Well, wrestling and all. Billed at 7'4", think he stood 6'11". Wilt was 7'1".
Go Bruins.
Big boost for the Bruins if he's not rusty.
Probably make him immobile or brain damaged when he's middle aged, but who cares, he can just sue someone.
And to be honest, I'd play too in his situation. It's f-ing game 7 SCF.
9 days til Kakko!
Hopefully he appears and hammered and bat shit crazy as the Golden Brett did om Sunday.

Binnington can't save them all

No exaggerating, the B's should have 4 or more goals right now. Bennington has been the absolute difference.
Bruins D will activate.
OMG!!! What a save. There was your chance.

Nope. I didnt even get that right.
Suck it Boston, Papi, Bruins, BB for that weird coaching strategy vs Foles , and the Red Sox and Bill Buckner
I'd personally vote for ROR but either is deserving

Or I'd be so pissed I leave.
On reply looked like Marchand made an awful change
I went to the 2012 College World Series Super Regional in Charlottesville, where I watched UVA get blown out by Oklahoma in a deciding game 3 11-0. I stayed through the 9th inning to applaud my team for a great season, even though it didn't end the way I wanted.
Awesome how they aren't even trying to bleep them
Ovi was classic, Kessel was funny, not sure we're going to hear stories like we did the past few years.

hockey boards are brutal.
On to draft/free agency threads, LOL
And I second that, thanks for a great playoff thread pj. Always a pleasure
Agree completely! Have a great off season picas.
I'll start a draft thread next week, or maybe Rangers fans want their own with such an exciting draft for them coming up.
Either way, I love the discussion and then free agency and before you know it we're at the Hlinka Gretzky (first major INTL U18 tourney of the year) in August.
thanks for the thread pj!
