Dave-Te Podcast-A Look at the Guard Class

WITH TACKLES AND CENTERS APLENTY, NFL TEAMS FIND THE GUARD POSITION LACKING
Unless college tackles like Jonah Williams, Kaleb McGary and Cody Ford line up inside, teams are not finding too many pure guards in this draft class. The one that fits that description, Boston College's Chris Lindstrom, will probably hear his name called during Day Two action. Still, Day Three is where teams could strike gold - with a little patience. Indiana's Wes Martin seems to be a popular non-Combine guy teams are doing homework on, but the best guard in this draft could be another projected conversion - tough as nails Dalton Risner or Charlotte's rising star Nate Davis. Here is the Scout's Honor take on the offensive guards in this draft class.

NFL Draft Overview - Offensive Guards
Paul Crane and scout Dave-Te' Thomas look at this year's class of guards in the NFL Draft. Several players have played other positions as there are few "pure" guards in this draft. The top players, how teams are looking at them, those most interested, best fits and some small school sleepers all here.

I ask that only questions/comments on guards be posted here, so I can keep things in order. I have a general Q&A for other stuff on this site.
Coming up-Running Backs next, followed by a division by division look.

Again-simple rule-no dogging other members and NO cursing. Let's keep this like Dragnet, just the facts, thanks

Impressive tape against Alabama and Miss State. I have him right at the top of this group with the likes of Lindstrom, Bradbury...etc.

Arm length is an issue but what he can do with his footwork and bend, I see a starter in the league, preferably at OC.

Thoughts?
How do you guys review so much information??

I find your information so fun to read, but always come awaybimpressed with how much work you must do! Thanks for everything

Working from home the week of the combine and had it on in the background, so I got to watch Froholdt's workout. Very clear that the coaches running the drills took a liking to him and were joking around with him the whole time.
Paul Emery has him as his 5th ranked interior OL prospect...

Hjalte Froholdt – Arkansas. Froholdt is a Danish prospect and a former defensive lineman with only three years experience on the offensive line. I have no idea why he wasn’t at the Senior Bowl, but for me was a huge whiff by Jim Nagy. He was at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl and reports out of that week were that he was one of the best prospects in attendance. Froholdt still has things to learn – but let us not forget we are projecting forward to the league and I like him to grow into a starter. His best fit will be a zone scheme – he moves well and understands how to work square nicely. He does have short arms, so can be a little bit of a “catcher”. He is flexible, but can be a little high immediately post-snap – but then works to drop his hips – but that’s correctable. He doesn’t always trust his anchor, but if he adds a little more “sand in his pants”, he’ll be fine. He played at center in one game I watched, but his snaps were a little bit of an adventure, so perhaps guard for now.

I've known the kid for years & actually do an annual show over there. Yes, center is where most are working him out at. KC is really high on him & I expect him off the boards early Day 3. Doing a feature on him next week, by the way.
Your thoughts on Nate Davis?

I started in 1967. Ole friend Joel & I were turned on when my uncle brought us all these AFL media guides he got from Al Davis. In 1967, Al hired me to do reports at age 14. the business grew & I do reports for 27 teams in the league. Starting in 1967, I hit the SIDs at the school for info, branched out to the coaches later. I selected talent for a series of college all-star games (Blue-Gray, Hula, East-West, All-American Classic) where my philosophy was to bring in a lot of guys on the bubble. You develop a feel for what you do over the years, but unlike my deceased buddy, I went the team route rather than go draft analyst. I put info on here because I enjoy the reader base here & have a personal connection.
Still, I am glad the monitors started policing, because some interlopers have made it pretty testy on this forum recently. Fan frustration should not turn to insults of others & I've been reminding folks of that recently.
Oh, mine is a job no one should have - the sacrifices made, the hours invested catch up with you and it gets me closer & closer to decision day April 28th.
One reason I tout Sy is, James Brown gave him his old monniker. You guys got a gem there
My guess there's probably a bunch o

Guards to look at as center projects.

Think 6'3" 320.

Some with possible moves there are
McGovern, McCoy & Jordan (likely)
Wes Martin, the Great Dame, Javon Patterson
Still, wish Giants give Brown a shot-he's already there & has a year under his belt
Fun stuff

You know the NFL when it comes to OL guys - one from Column A to Column B. Two from Column C to Column A. I still think the Giants go heavy on D, do you have the same gut feeling?
Hey Dave

I'd be surprised if you remember me but we met many times at the draft. I helped with the draft info for the defunct Sport Magazine( for those old enough to to remember). I used to hang out at the draft with you, Joel(whose sport jacket always looked 5 sizes too big),Palmer Hughes, Henry Hertz,Don Ward and some others I can't recall any longer. You were always so passionate about your work and nothing has changed about that to this day.
I have been on BBI for a very long time and I want to thank you for bringing so much great info to us here.

Nate Davis:

2nd round prospect that I think is a starter within a year or two. Can physically handle the size and power of the NFL with his strength and ever-present leverage. Love how long he can play and when he keeps those hands inside, he is near-dominant. Gets a little sloppy with his footwork but I don't see it as a capability thing, just needs to be coached up. Has a couple red flags character wise.
Does Elgton Jenkins make it to our 3rd round pick?
The_Boss : 4/11/2019 9:26 pm : link
I’m guessing no, but looking for confirmation.

Generous of you to ask. Yes

I'm seeing front 7 - 1,2,3.

Then the rest of the draft a blend of more front 7 types with various offensive linesmen.

Maybe a FS or a TE in the mix at some point.

And that's all.

Thrn the 2020 draft being almost an all offense skills position emphasis with a few cornerbacks.

As a fan, I absolutely love Lineman with an attitude. The kind of mean-looking, no-nonsense, angry-at-the-world kinda guys. I think that is one of the appeals of Hernandez.

My questions are this:
1) Does this character trait actually matter on the field? Is it just a fan favorite thing or do coaching staff care about it at all?
2) Who is the Hernandez (nasty SOB) of this year's draft on OL?

Cheers Dave. Another excellent listen.

And just convenient the team is serious on the Kansas State kid at #37, if he gets that far. Two years at center, 2017 spolit between right-guard tackle & all right tackle last year. With 154 knockdowns, he tops all tackles by 24. He's even nastier than the Frank Ragnow-Detroit kid from last year
