They liked what they saw from Herbert during the season, and the pre-draft evaluation would've been very interesting had he come out. Process is in very early stages on Lawrence. Doesn't mean they won't draft a QB this year.

Edholm Yahoo Sports: NFL mock draft 3.0: How far could Ohio State QB Dwayne Haskins slide?

“6. New York Giants — Michigan EDGE Rashan Gary
Let me preface this by saying I almost mocked them a QB here — and it was not Ohio State’s Dwayne Haskins. If you can make it all the way to my No. 17 overall pick explanation, I’ll have more on this there.
Like Allen, Gary is a New Jersey kid who would be coming home in this scenario. Now, that’s no reason why the Giants should draft him, of course, and there’s a question about where best he might fit in James Bettcher’s defense. But there would be enough of a match here to where Gary can be a pressure/energy player up front in a few different spots.

17. Giants (from Cleveland Browns) — Duke QB Daniel Jones
We’d be as skeptical as you might be if Jones is the pick here, as his arm talent and potential upside does not read top-20 selection. That said – going back to our dance-partner theory – it feels like a very Giants-y pick. Jones would be a safe selection, as his smarts and toughness would serve him well in the New York market.
And the Eli Manning comparisons are impossible to ignore, from Jones working with David Cutcliffe to dealing with sub-par offensive line and receiver talent holding him back in college. There’s a lot of smoke coming from the Giants-Jones connection, so we’re pegging him here even with reservations.”

Benoit MMQB: 2019 NFL Draft: Biggest Need, Hidden Need and Top Targets for all 32 Teams

“NEW YORK GIANTS
Biggest Need: Left Corner. Rumor has it the Giants are taking an edge rusher, which makes sense. Their best one, recently signed ex-Cardinal Markus Golden, has not fully recaptured the explosiveness he showed prior to his October 2017 ACL injury, and 2018 third-rounder Lorenzo Carter had a quiet rookie season. Plus, GM Dave Gettleman prefers to build his defense from front to back. That said… if we’re talking about biggest need, Gettleman must address his left corner spot. It would currently go to fringe backup Tony Lippett, who has played in only three games since tearing his Achilles in training camp of 2017, or Sam Beal, a third-round pick in last year’s supplemental draft who missed his entire rookie year with a shoulder injury. It’s not just that New York is weak at left corner (and, after this year, could be weak at right corner, since Janoris Jenkins could well be a cap casualty in 2020), it’s that defensive coordinator James Bettcher’s scheme puts strong demands on this position. Bettcher believes in blitzing, either through the A gaps or off the slot (depending on his personnel). You can’t readily do that without playing one-on-one coverage outside. Bettcher’s pressure-heavy approach puts him in that quarter of NFL defensive schemers for whom a corner is a necessity while an edge rusher is almost just a luxury. If the Giants feel that the bang-for-buck with their No. 6 overall pick is better at edge rusher, fine. But leaving this draft without a new starting caliber corner would be a failure.

Hidden Need: Slot Corner. This is a totally different position than “outside corner”—and for the Giants, it’s bereft of talent. Their option in the slot right now is either 2018 undrafted man Grant Haley or veteran special teams ace and backup safety Michael Thomas. Bettcher employed safeties in the slot as the D coordinator in Arizona, but that was with Tyrann Mathieu and Budda Baker, both of whom have the compact bodies and athletic burst that are ideal for the job. New York’s current roster has no one like that. If Bettcher feels that new safety Jabrill Peppers can fill this void, then the Giants could look to draft a safety to come off the bench and play in Peppers’s spot on third down.

Also Looking For: Wide Receiver. The signing of Golden Tate suggests the Giants don’t believe they’re in the tear-down-and-rebuild phase that people assume. But with Sterling Shepard, Corey Coleman, Bennie Fowler and Cody Latimer in the final year of their contracts, vacancies at wideout are inevitable—especially given that Shepard is the only one who is sure to be worth re-signing. Tate is best in the slot, but his most productive season—2014, his first year in Detroit—he aligned outside on nearly half his snaps. With Tate able to align anywhere, New York can make room for any type of receiver. Ideally, they’d find a bigger-bodied one to play the “X.”

Who They Can Get: If the Giants stay put at picks 6 and 17, the corner will likely come with the later pick. LSU's Greedy Williams is the best cover man in this draft, but can the Giants live with his questionable play against the run? Georgia's Deandre Baker brings a little less size but a little more feistiness, while Washington's Byron Murphy might be better suited to the slot in the NFL but played very well on the perimeter in college. Murphy and Notre Dame's Julian Love might be the best slot corner candidates in this draft. As for receiver, maybe some size with A.J. Brown of Ole Miss or N'Keal Harry or Arizona State. But as far as that No. 6 pick goes, the value will be at quarterback (Dwayne Haskins? Drew Lock?) and the defensive line (Montez Sweat on the edge, or make room for Ed Oliver or—if he falls to them—Quinnen Williams as interior disruptors).”

19. Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
20. N'Keal Harry, WR, Arizona State (up from No. 22)”

“2. Sleeper of the week
Keep an eye on athletic Alabama State offensive tackle Tytus Howard. With the tackle class seeing a rise in the eyes of evaluators as we get closer to the draft, Howard is the type of easy-moving, high-upside tackle teams could be willing to gamble on at the top of Round 2.”

QB
Freeman B/R: If NFL Teams Like Dwayne Haskins, Why Is He Tumbling Down Draft Boards?

“After speaking to a half-dozen front-office executives and coaches, some answers are becoming clear.
"Can he move enough when [the] pocket changes?" one NFC coach asked in a text. "Great kid! Will learn. Agility concerns and limited exposure [with] down-the-field throws."
This is one of the smartest coaches (and people) I've ever known. If he is expressing these concerns, then my guess is this is an emerging—or already established—leaguewide belief about Haskins.

"I like him a lot," the coach added. "He'll learn but will take time. Best place would be a [year] or two behind a veteran starter. A good comparison would be Jacoby Brissett. I loved Brissett. I'm a little concerned about Haskins."
Another comparison floated my way was Byron Leftwich, the former Jaguars quarterback who is now the offensive coordinator with the Buccaneers.
Nothing wrong with becoming the next Leftwich, or Brissett, but patience isn't an abundant resource in the NFL anymore. Teams aren't going to want to take several years to groom Haskins if they take him in the top 10. They're going to want more immediate production. This might explain the alleged slide.
Other NFL sources worry it may take years for Haskins to develop the mechanics and footwork needed to perform the core task of the quarterback game: connecting accurately on deep passes.”

Watching FSU's Brian Burns for the 1st time today. After 1 series I am sweating for the Clemson tackles that have to handle his twitch/get off... seen false starts already, this kid is legit

Don’t be surprised when he goes a lot higher in the draft than consensus mocks suggest .. I’ve been trying to say it .. possibly even to the Giants

trying not to drool: Burns w/a double chop to rip move w/solid bend to corner on an 8 yard drop, hips and feet get parallel to LOS and is able to clear the LT w/speed. He is gonna get even better at this... also cool to see his moves improve as the game goes on to both tackles

really cool to see DC Barnett use Burns as a stacked 30/40 tech in their GL packages, mostly into the boundary. Utilizes Burns twitch and short area burst to play pitch or QB in IZ ZR. Just diff ways to use a freak athlete, reminds me of a Big Blue DC ive studied

Part 3: RIP HOF Forrest Gregg
Defenderdawg : 4/12/2019 10:43 am : link
“Gregg was drafted out of Southern Methodist University in the second round of the 1956 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers and during a 15-year pro career established himself as one of the finest tackles in the history of the game. He also was called upon to play guard in emergency situations.

Legendary coach VINCE LOMBARDI described Gregg as “the best player I ever coached.” Gregg starred for the Packers from 1956, 1958 to 1970 and one final season with the Dallas Cowboys in 1971. He was a member of six NFL/NFC championship teams and three Super Bowl winners. Gregg was also elected to the NFL’s All-Decade Team of the 1960s and the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team. He was enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1977...

Gregg, at 6-4 and 249 pounds, was considered small for the job as he entered the pro ranks. He was targeted from the start for the right tackle position in Green Bay. Realizing that he would never be able to overpower the monstrous defensive left ends that would be pouring in on him, Gregg went to work to learn how to finesse his potentially overpowering opponents. He spent countless hours watching coaches’ films of the most noted stars. It wasn't long before he knew the moves of every opponent and had perfected ways to combat them.

He earned an "ironman" label by playing in a then league record 188 consecutive games in a career capped by a final season in 1971 with the Super Bowl bound Dallas Cowboys.

As the Packers grew in stature in the 1960s, so too did Gregg. He won All-NFL acclaim eight straight years from 1960 through 1967 and was selected to play in nine Pro Bowls.

In 1961, and again in 1965, when injuries created a crisis on the Packers’ offensive line, Gregg willingly switched to guard to fill the void. In 1965, one major wire service named him an All-NFL at guard, the other picked him as its all-league tackle.

Following his playing career, Gregg embarked on a long coaching career that included 11 seasons as a head coach in the National Football League (1975-77 Cleveland Browns, 1980-83 Cincinnati Bengals and 1984-87 Green Bay Packers). During the 1981 season, he led the Bengals to their first-ever Super Bowl.

He personally scouted and drafted future Hall of Famer ANTHONY MUŃOZ, telling Bengals owner PAUL BROWN “Anthony Munoz will be one of the best offensive tackles ever to play the game.”
