An Offensive Tackle to Keep an Eye On: Joe Lowery (Ohio)

mittenedman : 4/12/2019 11:40 am

This is a Giants-type OL. Was not invited to the Combine but is receiving a lot of interest and private visits. Expected to go in the round 4/5 range. Modeled his game after Joe Thomas who he spent years studying.

At Ohio's Pro Day, Lowery measured 6'6" 300 with 32 5/8" arms. Started at both LT and G but will have to kick inside at the next level. Known as a smart, tough, no nonsense guy who was the quiet leader of his OLine group. Plays with technique & finishes blocks. PFF calls him a "menace in the run game", ranking him the 2nd best run blocking OT in the draft behind Risner.

His college OLine Coach:

“He does have good feet, he’s got decent strength, he has good length. When you turn on the film and see some of the intricacies of his game, that’s probably his biggest strong suit. He’s very, very intelligent. He could make adjustments in game. You could switch things up and he would not only be a leader out there, but he could really handle all those challenges and changes.

He took his game to another level this last year, and that’s why he had so much success running the football,” Miller said. “He’s definitely an NFL caliber player. He will have an opportunity to show what he can do at the next level. I think he could play for a long time.

Along with Deiter, Lowery seems like a strong candidate for a "key backup" role on the OLine - and a "David Diehl" who may stubbornly work his way into the starting lineup for 10 years.

Small school prospects are fun

But for the most part they end up like Mr. Pancake, or whatever his name was that washed out. Still, I've seen Lowery's name mentioned as a sleeper.

Mitch Petrus. Set the combine record with 45 bench presses. Tons of pancake blocks. No lateral mobility. When was the last time we had a day three OL who was even a good backup?
Sounds like a G

Shorter arms, small school... these guys are good targets for our extra picks 5-7. Developmental online from smaller schools.

Adam Koets a 6th rounder OT from Oregon that the Giants converted to OC. They really expected Koets to replace O'Hara, but a knee injury blew up that plan.
How about

Herman? That was a wasted pick.

Matt McCants in 2012 turned out pretty good for a 6th rounder

2005 Guy Whimper?

2003 David Diehl was a solid starter.
