Hardest time of the year for a non-college fan...

rnargi : 4/12/2019 1:26 pm
...I know what the Giants need. I hear a million different things about the kids coming out. But I have no clue what to believe and what not to believe. And more importantly, WHY I should believe what I'm hearing.

I love going back and looking at drafts past and wondering how Ray Lewis can fall to the 20s in the first round, Antonio Brown falls to the 6th round, and guys like Vince Young and JaMarcus Russell go so high.

And when I do watch college ball, mainly during Bowl season, it's absolutely nothing like the pro game so I have no clue how to evaluate anyone. Seriously...I look at the projections and wonder, "Who the hell knows WHAT these guys are really going to do"? It seems to me, most 'scouts' and 'experts' have track records on par with the local weatherman!

I love this time of year, though, and appreciate all the thoughts from Sy and Dave Te, etc...I just sit back and hope for the best!
So true

Then factor in most of these "analysts" have no more clue than you or I, but they gotta say something and look like they know what they're doing....

I agree with you.

I'm casual college football fan with a focus on the SEC as I believe for the most part the SEC is somewhere between NCAA and NFL level.

Anyway, my general rule of thumb is production. Of all these different elements they try to piece together, production (against the best competition) seems to make the most sense.

Even then there are exceptions...Ron Dayne anyone?
totally agree nargi.. I read so much information that contradicts

each other and even by so called experts and media and people on bbi. I don't rule anyone out. I guess I have some favorites but wouldn't want to have to make the choices. I'm sure on draft day I won't know half of them, some I'll be glad about. QB's hope we get one but not sure which one. Even the ER's seems like so much contradiction. I wouldn't dare to guess which is better or the right choice for the Giants.
the best is guys here

who obviously have biased opinions based on which college team they followed.

i never took the time to see which posters are loyal to which colleges exactly but there always seems to be overwhelming amounts of Michigan love whether they're good or not.
I am a college fan

But I have no idea how to scout players or project them to the NFL. All I can do is listen to opinions from other people who seem to know what they are talking about. It’s fun anyway though, key is to not get too worked up on draft day. I will root for any players they draft and hope it works out.
I don't pay a lot of attention until the Giants pick the player
Steve in ATL : 4/12/2019 3:18 pm : link
Will dig into the player info when the Giants make the pick. If a player isn't a Giant then I don't care about him. April 25 can't get here fast enough.
Rob, at least you and I are willing to admit

we don't know what the hell we are looking at (via the college game). Maybe that's what BM meant when he said "basketball on grass"
Agree with the OP

Its so hard to know how good any of these guys will be. Between the guys transitioning from spread offenses to pro offenses, to guys coming from small schools who put up huge stats but you don’t know if that is due to inferior competition.

And there are so many years where the experts in January and February tell us that the QB class is weak, etc. And all of a sudden a month or so before the draft there are suddenly three QB’s slated to be top 10 or 12 picks.
bw knows!

He knows, I tell ya.
I generally watch more college ball
FrankieR : 4/12/2019 4:06 pm : link
When the Giants stink and its probably because we have glaring holes and I am looking at prospects who can fix that. Generally I start uearing about college players at the top of their game who are potential fits and I watch those games. I also tend to root for Michigan (when I was young, I liked their helmets...gfy) but am very cautious about players from that school because of that. I love Bush at 17 and would love Winovich in the later rounds.

This year I paid a lot more attention because of how bad I wanted to like a QB in round 1. As a result, I watched a lot more ACC and Pac 12 games and fpund it very enjoyable. But some of these prospects that come from lesser schools or small school O linemen, forget it. I wait for the Senior Bowl and combine

I m with you guys.
I have no clue on college players

so I used to rely on an expert former poster Matt in Syracuse but unfortunately he disappeared from this site many years ago.
Yup...

I think it’s amazing how much of an industry there is around this process which is, in large part, a crap shoot. The funniest thing is the draft itself where “experts” speak so authoritatively about the picks. Like anyone really knows. It’s snake oil and soothsaying and economics and the weather report and handicapping all rolled into one.

That may be the loosest use of the word "expert" - ever!... ;)

you at least have the benefit of being able to find many of the games of the major players on youtube. for example, if you are interested in Defensive lineman you can watch that player against some of the better teams (e.g., Rahsan Gary v Notre Dame - known for having decent Oline). Can also pick up things like effort, how they get off blocks, quality of sacks, etc.
