Just rented this on Amazon Prime. Read the synopsis to see if it might be your thing, but my son and I thought it was one of the best movies we have ever seen. Almost has a full metal jacket kind of feel to it. Loved it.
and the Schaefer School of Music student had an overriding ambition, that made him a match for JK Simmons, at the end, but also an arrogance that drove him to dump his girlfriend as not being 'good enough' for what he aspired to. He only realized that huge error after he had been dumped. A very good film, but that aspect seemed a bit off.
And JK Simmons: the mild mannered rep of State Farm, who knew what a disturbing, train wrecking, abusive 'mentor' he could portray?

Oz. Simmons has quite a range as an actor. Schillinger - ( New Window )
Mad Mike, thanks. I gotta get out more!LOL, although I'm not sure I want to pursue Schillinger, it might disturb my already too short sleep time. I'll check it out. Your rating?
Oz was very good for 4 seasons, but like most shows the last couple seasons weren't as great, but I still think they were good. His character, Vern, is as sadistic as they come

Someone beat me to the punch, but I guess you never saw him on Oz? For years it was weird for me to see him play anything other then psycho.
the argument of "Hollywood doesn't make any original movies anymore" is so tired. They are made, you just have to find them. The studios put all their marketing money into the big releases because that is what morons will line up around the block for...
Great job by Damien Chazzelle, who wrote and directed the film. If you like this, I also recommend La La Land. The way he uses music and sound to create the movie is tremendous.
I haven't yet seen First Man, but I've heard good things.

He's also a local guy, grew up in Princeton.
First Man is very good, but I can see some people not liking the style. It’s dwfinitely got a Terence Malick thing going on with that one.

I watched the first hour of First Man last night. Will watch the rest later today. So far, I think it is good but a little slow moving. I wasn't compelled to watch the whole thing last night.
LOL.

I don't think it was much of a stretch

Loved it. Thanks BBI.
Movie makes it seem like Parker getting a cymbal thrown at him was what made him great.
abusive instruction is more likely to burn more people out and chase them away from the art form than it is to develop the next Bird.
Liked the "Keep on keepin' on"a whole lot better.
New Orleans wasn't a great jazz movie - not even a good movie - liked because it identifies some of the early giants in the field.

That's a great movie. Justin Kauflin is from where I live. I have seen him play live multiple times (I think he moved to CA a while back).
