NFL's Fastest Players-Devin McCourty

jacob12 : 4/13/2019 1:54 pm
A poster wrote that Blessuan Austin is similar to the Rutgers DB's on the Patriots. Devin and Jason McCourty are much faster. Devin is 31 and he is the second fastest player in the NFL.

According to the NFL's Next Gen Stats, McCourty reached a top speed of 22.05 mph on his 85 yard interception return. The second fastest by a ball carrier this season. Devin is faster than Tyreek Hill.

The 5 fastest players are Dalvin Cook, Devin McCourty, Saquon Barkley, Kalen Ballage, and Minkah Fitzpatrick. Cook's top speed is 22.07, and Barkley's max speed is 21.91.

Many players run extraordinarily fast 40-yard dash times and are not among the NFL's fastest players. John Ross is an egregious example.

I'm surprised

...OBJ isn't up there too. He accelerates like a rocket
Running with pads and perhaps how the person handles

the pressure or adrenaline of the game really makes a difference.

That’s a good point about running with pads.

I’ve brought that up in the past - let’s see the player’s time wearing a helmet and pads, and starting from a stand up position.

In other words, like playing in a game...
Barkley probably has another gear,

I don't think there was a moment this year when Barkley went 100% full throttle for like 40 yards. Many times when he hit a crease, he was already gone and decelerated to the end zone.
Interesting info

Just to be clear tho, the 40 is not judging top end speed as much as it is acceleration.

If there was a published stat for the 30-40 yd split that would probably give this number. I’ve been interested for a long time even in seeing the 10-20 yd splits since, as you mention, players are never starting in that sprint stance.

Was the Barkley time on the Washington touchdown run? I remember watching it. And while Barkley hit the crease, when he got to the sideline, it seemed like he hit another speed to break away from any pursuit. He only needed to hit that break away speed for 20 yards as the pursuit was over at that point. He decelerated as he approached the 10 yard line for the score.
Barkley’s time is most impressive

That should be tested at the combine. Very important.
Rutgers has 2 sleepers at DB

In this draft. The S Hampton really came on last year. Very athletic.

Austin is recovering from injury. He’s got excellent size, long arms and the movement skills to play in the NFL.

Giants should look at both of these guys late. Hampton is the safer move. But both really could be 2 steals.
