From Dave-Te...Question For the Big Blue Readers on CBs

nflscouting : 4/13/2019 3:29 pm
Our staff is having a heavy debate on the cornerback class, as I feel most are glorified safeties. Sure, Murphy excels in the press, Baker is know for his instincts & Williams is known for his ball-hawking ability. Rock Ya-Sin seems to be the flavor everyone likes, yet few give him first round love.
Okay, your homework. Whether at #17 or #37, if you were DG (do not look in the mirror, it will scare ya), help me settle a debate. What CBs ONLY, would you want at either pick. Not just names, play Perry Mason & state your case.
Thanks folks!

At 17 but probably not my first or second choice at that pick
No way
YANKEE28 : 4/13/2019 3:36 pm : link
I am taking a corner at #17 or at #37
I don't have a case.
Klaatu : 4/13/2019 3:38 pm : link
I depend on guys like you, Sy'56, and a dozen others to make a case for me. With that in mind, I'll take Julian Love.
Can’t teach instincts

You have em or you don’t. LSU CBs usually are underwhelming in the NFL.

I think they have to pick their poison ..... in a good way! Secondary....Wait for value on day 3! If I had to guess......David Long – Michigan – Round 4

Their Back 4 is not great but I think there is no way they can draft a QB, fix the DL, get a stud LB, RT + depth, WR, TE ....hmmm IN ONE DRAFT!

Edavsiii says fix the front 7 and OL depth 1st!
Judging by the
LakeGeorgeGiant : 4/13/2019 4:09 pm : link
players that the Giants have worked out tgey dont appear to be a team poised to take a CB any higher than the mis rounds.

I'd like to see them come out if this draft with a potential starter at CB.
I really like R,ock.
FrankieR : 4/13/2019 4:19 pm : link
He has the hips, good size, not afraid to tackle. Plug him in 37 and with he and Beal, we jave two nice sized corners for the forseeable future. Quickness is a bit of an issue with a pretty bad 3 cone and not great 40.
Come on, guys.
Klaatu : 4/13/2019 4:20 pm : link
Dave does a lot for us. Pick a freakin' CB, fer cryin' out loud!
I wouldn't want any of them at 17.
j_rud : 4/13/2019 4:28 pm : link
Later sure but not that early. Every one of them has too many warts. I really want to like Ya-Sin, there's some versatility and great football character, but you also read about poor footwork and false steps in every report. Those characteristics have helped bounce many a talented corner out of the league before their first contract is finished.
Corners are like Qbs when it comes to the draft
ChicagoMarty : 4/13/2019 4:32 pm : link
They tend to go higher then they should because everyone needs them and good ones are hard to find.

I think Murphy and Williams could end up going in the top 10 when it gets down to it.

Baker will go in the next 10 and Rock will go in the third 10 that is to say #20 - #30.

That does not work out at all well for where the Jints pick and they really need to grab one of these guys imo

My next group is Lonnie Johnson, Isaiah Johnson and David Long

I can definitely see why some would characterize them as safety like

I would normally value them as third-round picks but because of the premium placed on corners (need trumping value) I expect that they all will likely go in the second round.

Third rounders will likely be from the group Mullen, Bunting, Love possibly Oruwariye and Layne

Fourth rounders - Jordan Brown, JJ Williams and Michael Jackson - another safety like group.

The thing is - Jints need guys like this and lots of them since their secondary depth is clearly the weakest part of the team imo.

I would have no problem taking whichever of the top three corners are still there at #17 and then dipping into the above pool for another in a subsequent round

Later on, I would seriously consider taking a guy like Sheldrick Redwine or Will Harris as a pure safety

But if the Jints are going to be serious about upgrading their D then they have to go all imo with regard to pass defending Lbs. This could be done by using their first choice, #6 on Devin White which would boost their speed all across the field.

Failing to take White early then they have to look at grabbing an Lb like Germaine Pratt with one of their fourth or fifth choices if he lasts that long.

Finding effective pass defending lbs is as difficult as finding pure cover corners. So I expect that the Jints brass will roll the dice on selecting additional safety like corners or effective pass defending safeties that can be moved into specialized dime packages.

We haven't had a player capable of creating turnovers like Greedy can with his elite speed and ball skills. I know he lacks physicality but he can be bonafide ball hawk at the next level. Worth the 17th pick IMV. Another guy I like who has zero lack of physicality is Byron Murphy, he can hit and make plays on the ball. I would be happy with either in Blue.
If Greedy can be a Marcus Peter's type of turnover machine
90.Cal : 4/13/2019 4:43 pm : link
We could use him big time.

I dont want a corner that wont tackle. And Peters gets beat deep a lot.

kid sounds like he could be pretty good. Got a Darius Slay-type game.

At 17

I would be comfortable drafting Greedy Williams. He's my CB1. Yes, he has tackling issues and makes business decisions, however, his ceiling is frighteningly high. His movement ability is not matched in this draft class. You don't need to tackle if nobody catches the ball on you.

I have D.K. Metcalf as my top WR (by a razor thin margin) and Williams shut him down. He has to be in the right scheme, with that scheme being press-bail. He'll do fine here.

At #37, I'd be comfortable drafting DeAndre Baker. Perhaps the most consistent corner in this year's draft. Good tackler. Physical. Plays well in a press-man scheme despite the fact that he's kind of slow. Reminds me of some of those Legion of Boom corners they used to have in Seattle.
I wouldn’t take any of em at 17
uncledave : 4/13/2019 6:01 pm : link
There’s gonna be better talent on the board. At least 1 or 2 picks will be a reach and value will drop to us. At 37 I like the Johnson boys Lonnie and Isaiah because of their size, tenacity, playmaking ability and passion. I’d also be into Rock or Layne for similar characteristics but prefer the Johnson’s. If I had to pick one guy being undervalued who will be a favorite for the redrafts down the road is Jamal Dean, yeah I’d consider him at 37 and call me crazy but that speed is a huge value add in today’s game. SEC exposure with great burst and quick twitch capabilities.
My personal preference
Giantsfanincuse : 4/13/2019 6:41 pm : link
Uneducated as it may be is greedy. I love the size and aggressiveness. One thing I think gets overlooked is all of the locker room/off the field stuff that as fans we will never know. His lack of private workouts is interesting, but to be a fly on the wall during any of these interviews....I hope Beal is legit, but we def need a serious infusion of talent. Would anyone be devestated if we drafted more than one corner?
A few
AdamBrag : 4/13/2019 7:52 pm : link
DeAndre Baker - Probably my top guy at the corner spot. I like that he can play man and zone, great cover guy, great ball skills.

Joejuan Williams - Big dude. Tough press corner. He can play some zone as well. I don't think he'll ever be elite, but he should be a solid corner in the NFL.

David Long - Probably wouldn't take him at 37, but I wouldn't want to bet against him. He was so solid at Michigan. Tough player.

Out of these guys, I'd bet Joejuan Williams is a Giants type draft pick.

Lonnie is interesting too

And for the record, Greedy Williams scares me to death
The only one with shutdown coverage upside is Greedy
Giantz_comeback : 4/13/2019 9:50 pm : link
And that os the most important trait and cam be even more important depending on system

Bettcher runs (or wants to) run A LOT of man to send pressure from EVERY level.

Greedy while the tackling is suspect is ridiculous in mirroring recievers. And he has a bunch of strong film vs quite a few WRs that will be playing on Sundays.

4.37 speed , decent height , and add a little more muscle. His fit and upside is sky high for Giants system.

Next guy on my list is David Long. 18 (or 22) completions vs 595 defensive snaps...are you kidding me? That's amazing.
Hard Pass at 17 and just say NO to Greedy
giantstock : 4/14/2019 12:59 am : link
None of the corners deserve to be taken befroe 17 considering who might be available.

The GMen have an enormous physicality deficiency in their front 7 and still holes in their OLINe.

The GMen should be trying to push for physicality on their defense. Greedy doesn't fit that bill. You can get a solid corner in Murphy or Baker in your scenario instead.

They both seem about equal. I'd take the one who has the higher ceiling. I don't know enough about that between these 2.

With all this said - I wouldnt take any cb with the Giants 1st 3 picks. In rd 3 GMEN can draft a cb and same in 4 and 5 and 6. You have options. You still have Jenkins as yoru starting cb and with all the picks you can go after others in later round seven if you dislike Beal immensely.

Because I think you can trade up from late rd 3 to early to mid rd 3 if you feel you have to-- I don't see a need to select a CB in rd 1 or 2 for GMEN for this particular team. .
Greedy Williams

Been some other pretty good corners who couldn’t tackle
ND Julian Love

Complete player. Consistent.

I don’t know if they are the same size, I haven’t looked. But his game reminds me of the giants cb Terrell Thomas.

Greedy Williams was awful in the Combine Drills

Very awkward turning his hips in drills at combine. Restarted several drills at combine.

Tape shows a guy who mirrors receivers with relative ease. He sticks to their hips better than Ive seen a CB do in a few years.
Lonnie Johnson
