Can someone explain to me why the NBA doesn't work more like the NFL and award the #1 pick to the team with the worst record? I've never understood how or why they run things they way they do
Or teams resting star players at the end of the year if a position was secured. NFL it is much harder to do that because you only get a limited number of inactive players and you need everyone active to contribute.
The Knicks were fucking dogshit this year and barely have a chance at the first pick, they are over 3x as likely to have pick #5. Deliberately losing does not make a lot of sense in that situation.

How are those odds figured? In other words, if you have the worst record but low odds to get the 1 pick then who would and why? I don't understand the math involved
Well the bottom three teams have the highest odds at #1 Â
They just aren’t very good odds. And this year they were reduced, historically it was like 25% for #1 I think. Now it’s 14%. The NBA flattened the lottery odds to further randomize the lottery and disincentive tanking.
There are some even more wild lottery proposals out there including the lottery wheel which is no draft lottery at all, literally just a rotating wheel of the #1 pick so you would get it once every 29 years. No incentive at all to tank in that scenario. The downside is not every bad team is tanking, sometimes bad teams are just bad and need talent.
I know is the Knicks need a top 3 pick and Dallas lost the tie breakers to Memphis and NO which is good. We need Dallas to finish outside the top 5 so the pick goes to Atlanta
One player can change a basketball franchise far easier than a player in any other sport. There are only 5 starters on the court and they play both ways. That's why tanking is a bigger issue in the NBA than in, say, the NFL. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_draft_lottery#Process - ( New Window )
Anyways, I'll be clutching my rosary beads come 5/14, along with some beers.

When the Lakers get #1 you will know the answer
Ernst & Young oversees the drawing.
