Just moving this off the AV thread started by Anakim to right size it to a NYR NFT.
Starting with news not reported in that thread:
The Rangers also fired Hartford coach Keith McCambridge and assistant Joe Mormina on Monday. The Wolfpack finished last in the AHL’s Atlantic Division with a 29-36-7-4 record. |
What role, if any, implicit or otherwise, did Quinn have in this decision? Could he have made known disagreements in approach, tenor?
Sheesh, you'd think Carpiniello could at least spell his name correctly.
Igor& #8203; Shesterkin,& #8203; the goalie& #8203; long& #8203;& #8203; considered the heir apparent to Henrik Lundqvist, and forward Vitali Kravtsov, the first-round (No. 9 overall) pick in last June’s draft, both agreed to their standard three-year contracts.
The deals cannot be officially signed, registered with the league or announced until after their KHL contracts expire May 1. But both players — who played in the Russian league this season — are expected to arrive in North America in late May and would then be in Rangers’ prospects camp after the June 21-22 draft, as well as NHL training camp in September. |
On Shesty, the eye-popping stats and the inevitable questions to be resolved over the coming 18 months:
Shesterkin’s arrival will force the Rangers to make some difficult decisions. The 23-year-old had a sparking season for SKA in the top Russian league, where he went 24-3-1 with 10 shutouts, a 1.11 goals-against average (second-best in KHL history) and a .953 save percentage (tied for the second best in KHL history) during the regular season.
The addition of the Rangers’ fourth-round pick (118th overall) in the 2014 draft will make for a crowd. He’ll be added to a team that includes Alexandar Georgiev, who had a stellar first full NHL season, and of course the incumbent 37-year-old Lundqvist, who struggled with the rebuild and the porous team in front of him. Lundqvist has two years left, at an $8.5 million annual cap hit, on his contract, with a no-move clause.
It is entirely possible that Shesterkin will need some time adjusting to the North American game – not to mention the size of the rinks, the language and the culture in a new country – and could start the season in Hartford (AHL). But if he does and performs at a high level, the Rangers will have to figure out who plays where and if they have to make a trade. Do they deal Georgiev, whose stock rose dramatically? It’s virtually impossible to move Lundqvist’s contract at his age and expect to get a worthy return.
Once upon a time, it wasn’t unreasonable for an NHL team to carry three goalies. That’s no longer logical to any degree, especially with one of them being Lundqvist, whose game thrives when he plays a lot and obviously suffered this season when he did not. |
Vitaly, sheesh, just 19, Quinn is going to think he's back coaching a college team:
Kravtsov, 19, is another story. He will also deal with an adjustment period for all the same reasons, in addition to being very young. But there’s an excellent chance Kravtsov can make the NHL team quickly, if not immediately. The Rangers desperately need high-end skill and Kravtsov has that – he wowed scouts and spectators during the World Juniors in Vancouver last winter. He had eight goals and 13 assists in 50 games for Traktor during the KHL season, and two goals and four assists in seven games at the World Juniors, where he played with both an injury and the flu and played center out of need. He also had six goals and 16 points in 16 games in international Under-20 competition. |
Me too.
I forget, when Tampa Bay was eliminated, the Rangers chance at their 2019 1st round pick went poof. What 2019 pick from TB did they end up with? A 2nd? Thanks
They have the Lightning's second round pick this year, but many think it'll be moved for Adam Fox.

Stars would play the Blues if they win.
Yes, 2019 2nd round pick from TB, since they did not win the SC in 2018 or 2019.
I thought WIN would beat STL, so I think DAL can too.
DAL is one of those teams who is solid all around. They have some really young D who are playing well, and their top line is steamrolling people.
I think they can beat the Blues, but I thought WIN would beat the Blues too, so who knows.
Need to knock out NSH first thought and that was my big upset pick for round 1 in the NHL playoff thread.

Also Winnipeg going out first round worked on nicely for us as the first rounder for Hayes should now fall right around 20th
They could do that and it seems like Fox REALLY wants to be a Ranger, but they may want to get him into the fold ASAP (He could be in the top-4 for us next year), so they could send a second or third rounder in the Hurricanes direction and not risk it.

Sounds like an intriguing prospect. There is a possibility that the Rangers won't have to trade anything to get him. They may wait it out and sign him as a free agent instead.

True. The article I read mentioned trading a pick as a possibility to eliminate any risk of Fox going elsewhere. Considering the wealth of draft picks the Rangers currently possess, that might be wise.
Caulfield is more of a goal-scorer than Zucc
Definitely the Stars are favored.

In Caufield?

At the level he is playing at sure. Wondering if he is as tough as Zuc for his diminutive doze.
That was an intense 3rd period last night, but I never thought Leafs would even it, Boston drove hard all night, a bit of a sag in the 3rd after Matthews brought it to within 1. Tavares looked meh, pretty ineffective to my eyes. Yes, Bruins were accounting for him, but he couldn't elevate moves enough to make a difference. Andersen was stellar, deserved better.
And on Saturday night, Jets looked surprisingly anemic vs the Blues. Hayes had some moments late but couldn't finish. Blues and Avs really bottled up (what I had thought were) the better skating Canadian teams.
Sure took a long time before K Albert et al. got an explanation for the Caps' goal that was waved off, Caps seemed to feed off that review/decision (twice over) for some minutes before the Canes got their 4th (nice digging and hanging in by Stahl). Went to bed with Stars even with Preds. Nice to see Zucc flying around.

I don't mind a new playoff thread, maybe wait until the first round ends? or we can keep it. some good stuff in there other than Rover overrating Penguins.
Have to say, I wouldn't mind seeing Caps eliminated (Ovechkin has no problems with the English language), but maybe I'd be more interested in seeing Trotz go up against his old team.
