But I was always intrigued by the fact that there actually weren't rules in the NFL for Accorsi and Smith to make a trade like this on draft day. It was very much an NBA draft deal deal in which you pick a player for another team and trade him. If Smith wanted to be the biggest prick on Earth, he tells Accorsi to pick Rivers, and then walks away. The Giants had no grounds to say "hey...they told us to pick him and we'd get Manning".
If building a "playoff team" is the goal, then AJ Smith did pretty good. I think the goal is winning the Super Bowl. In that aspect, Smith is a failure.
I think Smith made the right deal, and a great deal Â

From my understanding, I think Acorsi said they only picked Rivers because that is who they knew SD wanted. However, there was no outline for a deal. Acorsi took a huge gamble.

Wait, you mean their second choice or who they wanted back in a trade if Wli wouldn't sign there right? Because if Rivers was the guy they wanted they would've drafted him at 1 no?
No trying to be a wise ass just trying to make sure I understand your post.
Didn't really turn out to be a great deal. The players he netted didn't lead the Chargers to great things. Good things but not great things. EA got the better of the deal.
Eli and his father certainly dissed San Diego before the draft. Just being honest I guess. Wonder how he felt watching ELI get all that early SB glory.

I have no idea what you mean. EA drafted Rivers hoping that Smith would still trade Eli for him. But at the time of the pick there was no agreement saying that if you pick Rivers we will work something out. It was basically a hail mary based on Eli not wanting to be there.
I think people are acting like it was a huge risk Â
Eli was holding out if he went to SD period, that much is known. And it was very well known around the league, just look at his face at the podium lol. A trade would have been worked out eventually even if it wasn't on draft day. What was that asshole in SD do? Nah I'm cool with my first overall pick holding out for the year while we don't have a QB for the future. Not happening. He actually got quite a haul from us considering the circumstance and why a deal got done so fast.
Your point about Rivers being the guy SD wanted. Do you mean the guy they wanted back in a trade for Eli ( as opposed to Ben) or the guy they wanted all along? I'm thinking you mean the former because if Rivers was their guy all along they would've drafted him at 1, no?
Again, not trying to be a wise ass just trying to understand exactly what you meant about Rivers being the guy SD wanted.
Mic drop
Great job letting Brees go for nothing

That maybe true, but results are what matter and he gave up two QBs with a combine three Super Bowl wins
