For PJ.... SWR has been sitting 93-95 per BP with the comment

"The easy call here is back-end starter or low-end setup type because of mechanics and lack of a third pitch, but theres still a lot to like with two solid pitches and a great frame."

Stick a fork in him.

Szapucki apparently is being given some extra recovery days... always a great sign lol or just being cautious but.. sure sounds like any dreams of him moving quickly this year... are unlikely.

minors will be depressing this year until draft

just the nature of the beast. Not only the trades, but Alonso + Mcneil graduating to big leagues, Dom Smith + JD Davis also in the bigs, the usual suspects injured. It takes a few draft cycles to get momentum going in the right direction and last year they had sort of gotten over that crest after the graduations of the Thor/Conforto/Rosario groups, but that wave has reached the shore.

Also everything that could have gone right went right last year. Most of our recent top picks/big $ signings had great years (Gimenez, Alonso, Vientos, Mauricio) and many also broke out somewhat unexpectedly (Mcneil). It's highly likely at least 1 or 2 of those guys just has a bad year, either from bad luck, or injury, or just the normal ebbs and flows.
Not
DanMetroMan : 4/17/2019 10:48 am : link
aimed at Eric but..

The system is off to a horrendous start even beyond graduations or trades

Peterson- 1 start, meh
Humphreys- hurt
Szapucki- hasn't pitched much, days off
Lindsay- horrendous
Toffey-horrendous
SWR- Impressive
Newton-Hurt
Dibrell-very solid
Cecchini-hurt
Cortes-horrid
Lockett- hurt
Thompson-horrid
Sanchez- terrible
Carpio-laughable

This is true but how bright is a college RP doing well in the FSL (where he easily could have been placed last year). His upside is likely a good 7th inning piece, MAYBE a CU man. It's been really ugly any way you slice it. It's extremely early but yikes.

You know it's been rough going to open when the hitter of the week is Travis Taijeron (he's 30) and the P of the week has a 5.25 era and allowed 5 ER in his most recent start #Mets

Intriguing or not (BP actually wasn't impressed with his stuff at all, had his FB at 87- 90 in BK) he's allowed 18 hits over 13 innings... 23 baserunners, so if he's an example of someone off to a good start...
From BK
DanMetroMan : 4/17/2019 12:04 pm : link
LHP Kevin Smith

TO: Smiths fastball sat at 87-90 mph Wednesday night and had a bit of sink to it. He predominantly worked away to both left- and right-handed bats, but was far more comfortable pitching to lefties and already has nasty movement on his slider, which was clocked in at 80-83 mph.

The Mets 2018 seventh-round selection, who boasts a 0.76 ERA and WHIP after Wednesdays one-inning outing where he struck out two and walked one, could be more than just a LOOGY. Smith throws out of a windup with a pseudo-side arm release and has primarily been used as a long reliever with Brooklyn.

His approach reminded me that of Oliver Perezs with the Indians this year, but he will need to improve his fastball if he wants to carve out a larger role.

AR: A low-slot lefty out of the SEC (Georgia), Smith was always a likely overdraft candidate despite his obvious deficiencies. He has experience starting in school and has made three starts with Brooklyn this summer, but his long-term home is in the bullpen as a LOOGY. Besides his slider, theres a real lack of stuff here thats going to limit Smiths ceiling.

The stats (0.76 ERA, 28 K, 6 BB, in 23.2 IP) are exactly what youd expect out of a crafty SEC southpaw in short-season ball. Smiths slider will flash average to above and the delivery is relatively clean, but his fastball was topping out at 90 mph in just a single inning of work. Sounds an awful lot like the Daniel Zamora starter kit, doesnt it?

I only saw one change at 79, an offering Smith will need to develop heavily to elevate his future projection. For now, hes got the ceiling of a future LOOGY for me.

I didn't say he was off to a good start, just someone I was keeping an eye on.

I think we are just talking about 2 different things. I'm talking about how few bright spots there have been. Few and far between.
I've ben pretty consistent
pjcas18 : 4/17/2019 12:14 pm : link
that I will always, 100% sacrifice prospects for major league talent. It's a no-brainer in most cases (if major league player value is commensurate with prospect potential value)

so, if the major league team wins, I won't be so hard on the farm.

But even in lean years I could usually look forward to seeing the minor league box scores, but now it's Mauricio, Vientos, Gimenez and if SWR, Peterson, Kay or Szapucki pitch.

that's why I say it's depressing.
we knew this year was basically Columbia + 3 or 4 other guys
Eric on Li : 4/17/2019 12:52 pm : link
the same way it's way too early to overreact to Cano hitting .200 in 16 games and being a negative war player, I think it's way too early to place any statistical significance on anything in the minors - where they've played even fewer games. Especially with Binghamton since they've had as many games postponed by rain or suspended as they've completed.
Mauricio
DanMetroMan : 4/17/2019 4:45 pm : link
4 hits, his second extra base hit. He's going to take some time however. 1 walk on the season, fielding has been spotty. He's very talented, just not likely to be a "flies through the system" phenom, though you never know year to year.

Meh. The actual "bodies" just aren't there. The guys you can say "well he's good just underperforming". They just don't have a ton of minor league talent right now.

Exactly, this was my point. Not a lot of talent, not much to get excited about when looking at the box scores. And again, I'm not complaining, just observing. If the major league club gets straigtened out and is winning, it's a non-factor to me, but the past two years when the majors stunk and the minors wasn't great - that's a bad combo.

I remember the old days (early 00's) there was a guy at BA or Baseball Prospectus (?) named something Goldstein and he'd email out prospect reports every day and I looked forward to that email every morning.

I think he became a FO exec with some team.

It's really not under performance. It's lack of actual prospects. Underperformance over 2-3 weeks sure but it's also not really fair to say a guy like Lindsay or Thompson is "underperforming" when there are questions regarding their actual talent.

Yeah, that's the guy, his emails and daily prospect section on baseball prospectus (I think) was must read content (and it was free).
