Remmers update

Keep an eye on the Giants here. They are interested in him as their right tackle ...

OL Mike Remmers continues to progress nicely from minor back surgery he had earlier this offseason. Teams we've visited/spoken to have stayed in touch and he'll be signing somewhere after the Draft. He looks forward to being healthier & stronger than he's been the last 2 seasons.

After the draft doesn't work for me.
Klaatu : 4/17/2019 12:25 pm : link
I don't want the Giants to come out of the draft without a plug-and-play RT hoping that Remmers will sign with them.
Agree
Rong5611 : 4/17/2019 12:26 pm : link
We need to draft one too.

My assumption is that they are drafting a RT whether Remmers signs or not. I don't think his value will be enough to change anything.
There may be a handshake deal
Mike in Prescott : 4/17/2019 12:28 pm : link
in place already. I suspect if we don't draft an OT within the first 3 picks, that it means an agreement is already in place. JMHO.
Supposedly, he has not had another visit since he came to the Giants

I suspect the Giants know one way or the other....what is going on with Remmers
I'm really not against drafting an OT high
USAF NYG Fan : 4/17/2019 12:37 pm : link
despite the needs on defense. Remmers is a bandaid. They need a guy with the potential to replace Solder in a couple years.

I'm hoping DL, Pass rusher, and OT for the first 3 picks not necessarily in that order.

This absokutely. The Giants have 2 30+ bookends both of which have experienced injury concerns. Not taking at least 1 OT is very irresponsible. I would prefer to get 2 O lineman in the 3rd and 4th rounds unless we take one with the 2nd 1st rounder we have.
If Remmers couldn't pass a physical with the Giants...
Klaatu : 4/17/2019 12:53 pm : link
Why bother bringing him in, to watch him not pass your physical?

If I'm his agent, I'm keeping my options open, gauging the interest of every other team that might be interested in him.

If I'm the Giants, I'm not counting on that chicken before it's hatched. What if he signs with another team? What if he can't pass a physical?

The RT position is way too important to leave it up to chance.
Without Remmers
AcesUp : 4/17/2019 12:54 pm : link
The urgency to get a plug and play guy increases. It doesn't remove the need at all but it does have an impact on who you look at and may impact certain decisions. Say at 17 they have Christian Wilkins ranked slightly ahead of Jonah Williams - with Remmers on board you are more inclined to stay true to your board knowing you can get a developmental guy like Howard or Edoga later. However, if you've gone through great pains to fix the OL but still have Wheeler out at RT, you may go with the bigger immediate need in Williams without having that safety net in Remmers.
Signing “ after the Draft”
Shecky : 4/17/2019 1:06 pm : link
Interesting to me to read that, as it seems to confirm what the resident asshats here have been more than hitting at in regards to signing him

Always wondered what the significance of signing him AFTER the draft would be, and only assumption is you don’t want teams behind you knowing you’re not drafting an LT

Similar hints that something is in the works trade wise from same resident asshats this morning. Whether it’s QB related or not is unknown. But assumption is that it must be. Again, what’s the secret until draft day for?

Tie above two together with the direct hinting it is defense virtually guaranteed at six, and it all does tie together pretty nicely...
We got Karl Nelson in the third round
WillieYoung : 4/17/2019 1:07 pm : link
I would not pass on a higher rated defensive player with the first three picks just to "finish" the offensive line While Wheeler improved in the second half of last year, with the tackle talent in this draft you can probably find an improvement in the third round.

Klaatu : 4/17/2019 1:18 pm : link
The only credible asshat here said that signing Remmers was far from a done deal.

Willie, if you're going to build your offense around your dynamic young RB, in addition to protecting your aging, relatively immobile QB, than you'd better not leave anything regarding your offensive line up to chance.
U do a handshake deal for after the draft due to compensatory picks
schabadoo : 4/17/2019 2:41 pm : link
The timing of signing affects the calculations.

Remmers was released. He doesn't figure into the comp pick calculations
Remmers May indeed be a target for them
Dave on the UWS : 4/17/2019 4:17 pm : link
but I doubt it has any effect on the draft. They will draft a tackle when the value presents itself.
They need an OT in the pipeline
JonC : 4/17/2019 4:18 pm : link
Remmers would be a short term solution, and even Solder is getting up there.
I lean toward the handshake deal theory but here are a couple
Ivan15 : 4/17/2019 4:27 pm : link
Of questions.

Do we know if Remmers took a physical? He probably knew that he couldn’t pass one and told the Giants beforehand. Maybe this was just an interview.

Why would the other teams not interview him at least? Waiting for him to be healthy? Why would he back away from interviewing if other teams are interested?

I think the handshake deal is in place and he will sign as soon he can pass the physical. He chose the Giants. NJ is where he wants to be. How crazy is that?

If the Giants want a future LT, they need to draft one, after they draft a future RT.

Stop screwing around with projections.

Gettleman mentioned that Remmers had "just had back surgery" when interviewed on Sirius a few days after Remmers visited. Doesn't seem like there was any uncertainty with regard to his physical condition.

Nor is there any certainty as to where he'll sign if/when he's healthy.

There is no such thing as a minor back operation. Pass

PaulN : 4/17/2019 5:52 pm : link
Panicking, nothing has been done one way or another, the draft has not taken place, there is no need to discuss, this is all bullshit, the Giants know they need a right tackle, Gettleman unlike Reese, is not going to ignore that, I trust that more then anything, he is a huge defensive and offensive line guy, even in this draft, don't be surprised to see our first three picks to be Jawaan Taylor, Dexter Lawrence, and Jerry Tillery, or something along this line. He wants big men that can play, this is the type of draft to expect from now on.
Remmers is a stop gap
GothamGiants : 4/17/2019 6:57 pm : link
not a long term solution. If the price is right, sign and upgrade over Wheeler while drafting a mid-round developmental prospect and revisit next year.

Next year throw money at Daryl Williams if he returns to form during his "prove it" deal
Back surgery?

I mean, maybe he comes back from that. But for how long?

This may say more about how long they think it is going to take Remmer to pass a physical than anything else. Not knowing whether he's in the Giants' pocket pre-draft screws up use of picks 6 and even 17, depending on how highly the OTs in the draft are rated. For the Giants getting an RT able to play right away is not optional. Use of 6 for an OT may seem high, but 17 may be too late for the best of them.
David Diehl 5th rounder

save your money and heartache with Remmer. Stop trying to catch lightning in a bottle . Draft is deep in OL.

We will be Drafting one early. Remmers is a swing tackle/OG versatile backup type. He's not a long term part of the solution for this O-line. IMO DG knows that.
