Just win dammit.
That is great news!
We haven't seen him in like 3 years but yeah probably
That's what he says. Whether the team agrees or not remains to be seen.
He is not even teasing this year. He has been just awful. His stuff is all straight and he no control of his cutter and slider. That is why he is giving up such hard contact cause his four seam fastball is so damn hittable even though he still throws it 99mph. That is vintage Eovaldi.
Yeah but hes so gritty...
Quote:
is having a typical Eovaldi season (tease here and there, but mostly a heartbreak). Certainly, not the year he had last year. Of course he seems to do well against the Yanks.

Of course he'll throw 7 scoreless tonight
We are going to need Happ to earn his money.
Make daddy happy.
I don't think it was a bigger leap of faith than we took with Happ. With his age and clearly declining stuff, i'm still at a loss.

Consecutive perfect games and that contract would still have been the height of lunacy, IMO. I get that some level of overpay may have been practical for the huge role he played in last years WS run, but 4 * 17 is an outsized assumption of risk.

I was pretty outspoken against Happ, so I dont really disagree. But 4 guaranteed years vs 2 + vesting option is a fairly big step-down in risk.

Perhaps but Happ is 36 and Eovaldi is 29. I'll go for a younge arm with less tread more often than not.
Ugh. I was worried about this after ST.
1-0
Again, I see zero reason to think Happ is going to give us value.

Giving Eovaldi 4 years is pure lunacy. Eovaldi's arm doesn't necessarily come with less trend since he has had two TJS.
Happ - hard pass
Someone needs to take him out and take Marlins Man with him. I can't stand that fucking orange idiot.

J.A. Happ signed a 2 year / $34,000,000 contract with the New York Yankees, including $34,000,000 guaranteed, and an annual average salary of $17,000,000. In 2019, Happ will earn a base salary of $17,000,000, while carrying a total salary of $17,000,000.

Wow, okay that's better at least. Still though, he's looking quite toasty immediately into the contract. Hopefully, he can turn it around.

Don't think he's ever going back down to Scranton at this point.
His lightning hands are on display today. Nice double.
3-1
These pitchers don't need help.
Yeah man but we just have to deal with them for now and hope they can contribute something offensively. I found for me not expecting anything works best and if they do something it's a bonus. I'm not gonna get bummed at them if I don't expect anything.
We need the vets and even Frazier to carry the load for now.
Ha ha was just thinking the same thing. Looks like a foundering turtle...Made a great play and rushed the throw.

Will 1st guess here: With off-day Monday, Paxton 8 IP yesterday and only Harvey used out of pen, I think Ottavino or Britton should be in rather than Kahnle try to hold at 3-1 with #RedSox bullpen just about to get into game for dominating Eovaldi. #Yankees
Also nice to see yet another garbage hitter of a catcher hurt them.
Why do we need to hear about the "fallacy of the predetermined outcome" every damn time Kay can slip it in?

Their bullpen is fucking trash. Let's win this game.
They simply never stop talking. Never.
It was driving me nuts.
I found myself yelling "Shut the fuck up" along with an abundant cornucopia of colorful obscenities.
On the phone and into the room walks my wife.
As I was screaming "Shut the Fuck Up you worthless piece of shit."
Currently, she is not speaking to me.
Which, in a way, is a win.

He followed it up and said Boone was obviously correct.
Yeah he's a pitchers ump no doubt with that outside pitch but he's been calling it a strike all night. The hitters have to adjust. I'd be more pisssed if he wasn't consistent with it.

Try telling your clients that you are consistently going to provide a service other than what they pay for and see what happens.
If pitchers are allowed to micro-dissect every aspect of their craft and managers are allowed to use unimaginable stats to shift defenses from pitch to pitch, the umpires need to get with the robot-program.

Cmon man, it's baseball and this kind of shit has been going on forever. You can't compare it to our everyday workplace.
There's no doubt it bugs me he's calling those outside pitches strikes when they're clearly balls, but he has been calling that pitch the same way all night. If it was sometimes a strike and others a ball, that would really piss me off and drive me nuts.
If you've ever heard players talk about strike zones they just want it called consistently all night, and I feel the same when I watch.
That said.....
GARDY!!!!!!
Literally a shin-high strike.
Maddening.
Keep in mind that he then has to adjust and he is whiffing at sliders down and away because he has to protect the zone that is being called. It's just not good for baseball to have the best players fucked over.
Totally. And all against the Yankee hitters.
Tie goes to the runner then it should go to the hitter in the box.
I'm with you on that one lol.
It's one thing to call it a little off the plate again but no way in hell that ball wasn't low on Judge.
Your call on them not accounting for his height is spot on. I said it last year, the umps have a high/low strike zone in their minds eye and call it the same no matter what but they're failing to raise if for a guy Judges height. We're seeing a bit of that on Voit as well.
We had one good ump the other night who wouldn't give that too low stike when Judge was up and he's one of the only ones who's adjusted. Even O'Neill noticed it and said it was about time.
Now it is a strike on strike 3?
All things being equal, not a bad night for Happ...2 early HRs, but got through 6 1/3 giving up only those 3 runs.
Stay close and beat the Sox bullpen is the formula

That strike three call. Judge is the most unfairly umped player in the league. Yankees have to do something about this. You would think the umps would show more respect to him, considering he never argues back. But hey if they like being treated poorly by players, then glory to them
Keep in mind that he then has to adjust and he is whiffing at sliders down and away because he has to protect the zone that is being called. It's just not good for baseball to have the best players fucked over.
Sadly you are right about this, but sucks that judge has to over compensate for umps not being able to do their JOBS. But, on the flip side, Jose Altuve doesn't have the same problem, the umps give him the benefit of doubt for his small strike zone.
Agreed. But my true hero is Kahnle if we're talking pitching. He looks like he is back to (or close) his '17 self.

Yeah, god forbid umpires actually get evaluated like the rest of the world and be told to do better. You cannot ask hitters to swing at balls 4 inches outside of the zone. How about the ump be accountable for the shit job he does?
I dont give a rats ass about consistency. Being consistently wrong doesnt make it right. Be better at your job. The fact these guys arent evaluated and held accountable is mind numbing. And if they ARE being held accountable, why do they continue to get to use the pitchers ump excuse? A strike is a freakin strike. We dont get to make our own rules. Its frustrating as all hell.

They need to adjust to that or accept being punched out. It sucks but that's the reality tonight. If he was back and forth with it then yeah, I think they'd bemore prone to take it and hope maybe this time he gets it right but it's not happening like that tonight and at least he's been consistent in that shitty call. Expecting a player to swing at a ball that far off the plate is ludicrous. Theres nothing they can do with that pitch. I would watch it go by 1000 times out of 1000. You have to trust the IMO to be competent at his job. You cant just sail away at a pitch out of the zone because the ump may call it a strike
Wipes a lot of that bad taste from the weekend away.
Hopefully we're starting to even out a little and get on track. Gary is on the way back. Stanton is working his way. Hicks is feeling good.
Not all of the reinforcements are on the way, but some are... and those guys will definitely help. We should get a couple back before May.
Not sure if we'll get all these games in against KC - weather is looking iffy - but I'd really like to see us take 3 of 4 there.
Players in the booth from the Scooter to Murcer, Kaat, to the guys we have now have all said the same thing. Umps miss calls all the time but they just want them to be consistent so they can adjust as the game goes on.
I wish it wasn't that way but it is. Again, it's not acceptable to me either but I get more pissed at umps who are inconsistent. That really drives me nuts.
Thankfully it didn't cost us tonight and a fantastic win by our guys and even more so because it was against the Sox!

Absolutely man. You'd think they'd get reviewed and evaluated just like players do but we never hear if that happens.
Plus the whole you can't argue balls and strikes just gives these umps even more power and it's like a built in excuse to not have to account for anything. They're judge and jury and it doesn't seem like there is much recourse.
I know teams can file complaints but we never see much if any improvement. Just look at guys like Angel Hernandez and CB Buckner still having jobs for proof it's not a performance based job. Maybe if they were all forced to face the media post game like players it would help. Could you imagine the ump tonight being asked over and over by reporters about those outside pitches? Now that's a postgame I'd watch!
2 in a row
As much as Ive been down on Gardy as an every-day player and leadoff hitter, nice piece of hitting in a big spot
Nice little mini-leverage spot to get to see Kahnle tonight. He looks good.
More and more, were going to look back on this shitty string of injuries and underwhelming play and think hey, at least we were forced to give Frazier a truly every-day big league look. The kid can hit. He should be part of the equation for this team. Maybe hes here long term and maybe he isnt, but the point is that he has real value.
Nice win.
That's gone, and his swing looks really sweet.
Haha - I guess Vazquez's HR wasn't porched? As O'Neill said last night, maybe it wasn't a HR in any other stadium, but it was at least a double and probably bases clearing at that...so much ado about nothing.
Quote:
Whenever I read though the popular Red Sox board following a big NYY win, the talk there invariably devolves into what a joke of a stadium "the toilet" is with the short RF porch, and today is no exception. Same with the few Red Sox friends I have at work. They never want to talk about the shortest HR in ball--the 302ft shot to Pesky Pole in Fenway--nor the Green Monster...stickball anyone?
Haha - I guess Vazquez's HR wasn't porched? As O'Neill said last night, maybe it wasn't a HR in any other stadium, but it was at least a double and probably bases clearing at that...so much ado about nothing.
Yup. To me it's silly to complain about dimensions in ball parks. Their differences are part of baseball's charm to me.
Complaining about them or making excuses comes across as sour grapes to me because I think we've all seen visiting teams also take advantage of the porch, Pesky pole, Green Monster etc.
The Rays will cool off. It's the best run organization in the game, perhaps, but I don't think they have the horses to keep this up. I think the Yankees will not only catch the Rays, but will be fine by season's end for at least a wild card spot.
I have no idea whether on the whole that's a 75-win team or a 90-win team.
I have no idea whether on the whole that's a 75-win team or a 90-win team.
They are off to a great start like the Sawx
last year, don't think they are a fluke....
At least as far as being a good team, it's a long season.
I am not saying they will do anything like the Sawx,
simply pointing out a similar great start.
The Sawx started out 17-2 last year IIRC.
The Yanks need to tread water for awhile, until the walking wounded start coming back.
Not quite this legit - but they're good.
That said, they're not the 108-win team Boston was last year and the Yanks are better when reasonably healthy.
Will we get reasonably healthy this year? I hope so.
I'm not going to write Boston off yet. Not for a while. But they have real problems there that I don't think are just going to disappear... especially with their pitching.
:)
