Repole said president Bobby Gempesaw and vice president for administration, secretary and general counsel Joe Oliva were the reasons Hurley didnt wind up coming to St. Johns, and he said the two are standing in the way of first-year athletic director Mike Cragg making a hire for the job left vacant when Chris Mullin stepped down eight days ago. Repole said Loyola-Chicago coach Porter Moser passed on the job because he felt he wasnt Craggs choice.
Hes not going to stay now, Repole said of Cragg, who is in his first year as the St. Johns athletic director after more than 30 years as a Duke administrator.
This is not a New York laughingstock anymore, Repole said. We are now a national embarrassment.

St. John's doesn't just need to hire a new basketball coach; it needs to hire a PR firm after that Mike Repole interview on WFAN. This has turned into the abomination of all abominations. #SJUBB

It's no secret Mike Repole and Bobby Gempesaw haven't gotten along for years. Mike Cragg had tried to bring Repole back in the mix. #sjubb
Gempesaw and Olivia need to step down.
It's being reported he's withdrawn his name from consideration.
What a colossal mess this is.
Yeah I agree, that would be a home run. I really wanted Hurley for them and thought he would be perfect. It sucks that didn't work out.
St. John's basketball coaching search is hurting the Big East; time for an intervention - ( New Window )

Not a bad hire in a vacuum, but for St. John's it's disappointing - a blah, safe hire (which is maybe what they need). But better than Mullin, who by some accounts was an empty suit.
