Also Dave Gettleman - You don't give up on talent.

Which is it Dave?

Giants GM Dave Gettleman amid odd offseason: Talent isn’t everything - ( New Window )
He explained exactly what he meant.

which isn't even there. But the quote may offer some insight into his thinking.

For those that follow college ball, which QB out of this group is considered to have the greatest mental toughness? Is it in question with any of these guys?

Never even raised my voice by using Caps. The story is trending on Twitter right now. I just posted it. You don't have to be a complete asshole all the damn time is the point.

I didn't even say I was leaning one way or the other.

you know, on second thought, maybe you (and Twitter) have something here. Somebody should get this clear contradiction into the press room pronto, and somebody can finally nail that snake in the grass.

I imagine this comment and his other about the mentality of playing QB in NY favor Jones, and he is laying the groundwork for that nonsense. I don’t know that I’ve seen anyone question Haskins’ mental toughness, and he grew up in the area.
Talent isn't everything....
BillKo : 4/18/2019 2:06 pm : link
....should be rather obvious. If you have talent but dog it or aren't a team player, it can effect maximizing the end result.

But, at the same time, you don't give up on talent because a player might actually get there, needing time to figure it out. Maybe it should be written don't give on talent for a player that wants to reach his goal.

I run a summer baseball team. I'd rather have a good player who shows up for every game with max effort, rather than a truly great player who misses games and doesn't hustle all the time.

I can literally see how it effects the team........

If we let Beckham walk we don’t have pick 17, an extra 3rd the better 4th and peppers.

Which would you prefer? 10-15 mil in cap space this very moment which we’d use to overpay someone, or those picks???

Dg handled the Beckham situation masterfully. But it’s the giants so we have to bash every single move. If the pats did this everyone would be blowing them for it. Oh wait, they have done this.
All I know is
djm : 4/18/2019 4:22 pm : link
The giants had one of the best drafts in 2018. This is a fact. They brought in more young and productive talent than just about any nfl team. They now have more picks than any team going in 2019 which includes 3 picks within the top 35. This time next season the giants will have approx 100 million in cap space.

Someone find a way to complain about this. Have at it.
I love how DG

too funny
But..
FatMan in Charlotte : 4/18/2019 4:25 pm : link
djm, he said some dismissive crap about analytics, talked about the "Hand of God" and now is talking in circles about talent.

Clearly words matter more!!!
I’m not talking about how good or bad they were in 2018
djm : 4/18/2019 4:31 pm : link
I’m just talking strictly about roster building and how some of you can’t go five minutes without shitting all over DG. And why? Because he said something in a stupid press conference ?

Are the giants in a better place from a cap mgmt POV and draft capital POV? Have they shed most if not all of the dead weight? Have they jettisoned the so called malcontents? Or am I missing something? What if they win 8-9 games this coming season and head into 2020 with all that space?

But DG said some shit one day.
Here perhaps this example
jvm52106 : 4/18/2019 4:41 pm : link
will help you with DG's statement:

Jeff George- physically talented, arm talent as good as any QB ever- 10 cent head, not liked by teammates and never had much of a winning aura or leadership aura....

The guy walked into a clusterf$@k
DonnieD89 : 4/18/2019 5:00 pm : link
situation and we know he is trying to clean it up. DG is trying to build a team that is visualizes to be successful. You have to wait and see what happens, before we start complaining. I remember almost everyone on board parroting "In Jerry Reese we Trust". That's because his first years as a GM, he won a SB early, walking into a good situation. He can thank Ernie for that. Took a while to see that his drafts, caused damage to this organization. DG walked into a shit hole and is trying to fix it. All I say is let's give this guy a chance before crucifying him. I bet you, if this team starts winning soon, the whining will be less (Some people will still complain, because they still don't want him to succeed).

It’s crazy how some harmless statements get so many here worked up. Do people honestly believe the giants aren’t employing analytics? How did they win all of those games from 2005-2012? Sheer luck? How did they land four terrific talents in last year’s draft? Pin the tail on the donkey?

You can’t conjure up how bad the giants were from 2013-2017. Dg has been here for one year. Let the guy make his mark first before you bash him at every turn.

That's all well and good by you, djm, because the FO didn't touch your sacred cow. Were it the contrary, you would turn 180. Be real.

Be real: DG talks a lot of shit. And in terms of talent not being everything, ok, fair enough, but let's not elevate breeding over talent/ability to play the game. There's an acceptable middle ground. And by breeding, I mean the Maras' comfort zone, Christian Peter, OBJ (as long as he lasted), notwithstanding.

What sacred cow? Eli? If they traded him yesterday I’d understand the move and support it.That said I don’t think Eli or his contract is nearly the big bad wolf many here believe. He’s a perfect caretaker who might just win a lot of games here in 2019 if the team isn’t chicken fried shit. What a novel concept, I know.

Amen. All the more reason to stack up that elite talent on D this year then use all that cap money to plug any remaining holes with quality veterans.

If the Giants won like the Patriots, nobody here would be doubting how they run their business. They don't win much at all.

Cellar dweller teams get criticized. That's how it should be.

Everybody loves the old talking point of 'players on scholarship'. Let's apply the same standard to produce results on coaches, GMs and management too.
